One of the best films in recent memory! Milk is perfectly acted, well directed, and tells the story of Harvey Milk in a very compelling way. The film has a nice mix of historicity through telling the story of the gay rights movement, not in a dry or documentary-style but from the personal perspectives of key players. The characters are beautifully depicted and sympathetic.

Gorgeous film, with a beautiful, Oscar-worthy lead performance by Sean Penn. In fact, it may be one of Penn's best performances ever. I can't imagine how anyone - gay or straight - could watch this film and not be moved. A fitting & lovely tribute to one of the gay civil rights movement's most prominent figures. SEE THIS MOVIE.

There are many reasons why this film is so compelling. Part of it is that it is written from true historical events and smartly uses archival footage from the time to flesh out the story. The film is also very tightly written and well directed. Finally, it is one of the uniformly strongest casts I have seen in a long time with many standout performances. I ca't remembe rthe last time I saw a movie that hits its mark this well.

Van Sant captured a time in the seventies, when the idealism for all of the US's, those of us on margin of mainstream society were yearning for less shame and more empowerment, spurred Harvey Milk to activism. The film portrays his energy, his playful seductiveness, and his passion. The news clips remind the viewer of the reality that was then, and the parallel with today. And more importantly the film celebrates a community that stood up for its rights. Penn's protrayal echoes the Milk's core. Van Sant captures the spirit of the times...

My husband and I saw this movie. I want to point out that the majority of the audience in the sold out theater appeared to be heterosexual couples like us. At the end there was much clapping.
Sean Pean, James Franco, and Emile Hirsch were outstanding as well as the rest of the cast. We went to see this movie because of the strong cast and we both found the story very interesting. I was in high school in Arizona when this all happened, but really can only just barely remember the Anita Bryant part of this story. I had no idea who Harvey Milk was until I saw this film.

Wow. "Milk" is, among other things, a time machine, reprising with fastidious detail and spectacular artistry not just a tumultuous moment in our social history but everything else in attendance -- the emotional tone, the politics, the sensory overload we all felt living through it at the time. It's more than just a film clip rendition, though. The actors open up for us a much deeper connection. We are right there, right then. Sean Penn is Harvey Milk. We left exhausted but exhilarated by the movie, and devastated all over again. If only more movies set the bar this high.

I was 14 and living in SF when Dan White shot Harvey Milk and George Moscone. I went to City Hall the night of the vigil with my dad.
So, I have a bit of a sentimental attachment to this film. That said, it starts a bit slowly, but it picks up speed and turns out to be a wonderful picture. Worth seeing, especially in light of what's happening - even in California - to the civil rights of gays and lesbians in America.

I am not much of a writer, but this film got to me is so many ways. I lived much of that time and I think so many young gay people today have no idea of the struggles we went through to get the freedoms we have today. And though some groups are still trying to take away our rights, we are far better today than we were 30 years ago. I have not cried at a movie in a long time, but tonight I did, and all the way home.

Sean Penn is absolutely brilliant as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold public office in the United States. His life is portrayed as a fluid evolution of character and passion - through his interactions with the incredibly convincing supporting cast (including Josh Brolin, Emilie Hirsch, and the always fantastic James Franco) and the internal conflicts Milk struggled to overcome. Even after leaving the theatre, I was absolutely stunned by the message of hope and the power of change in an otherwise hopeless world.

Knowing how the movie would end going in did not take away the emotional impact it had on me. I dare anyone to watch this movie, gay or straight, and not come out of it with a greater understanding of how oppression is wrong regardless of who is being held down.
Sean Penn is just amazing and his performance is just one of many in Milk. I don't have one negative thing to say...truly Oscar-worthy in every way.

Like Dr. MLK, Harvey Milk predicted his own demise, and recorded cassettes to be played upon his death, which is the vehicle of the excellent script by Dustin Lance Black. Mr. Milk bridged communities and fought for human rights as well as for gay rights. (His successful campaign to defeat Proposition 6 in his era resonates because of the passage of Proposition 8 recently.) Sean Penn becomes Harvey Milk in the film. There isn't a false step by anyone. The love between his friend and early campaign manager Scott (James Franco) seems very real. (There have been complaints that Diego Luna's performance is over-the-top, but his character did eventually commit suicide.) All in all MILK is one of the best films of the year.

Easily one of the best movies of 2008. Sean Penn and Josh Brolin give incredible performances, as does the supporting cast. I was afraid it would not live up to my expectations, having followed this story since Harvey Milk's death in 1978, but there was no need for concern. Gus Van Sant is a genius.

Loved this movie. First of all - Sean Penn is phenomenal. From footage I've seen of Harvey Milk, he really captures the guys mannerisms. He is really amazing. The film weaves in great archival footage that helps give it a stronger sense of the moment. And everyone really captures the importance of the times. I thought it was a little flat at times but overall a fantastic movie.

Made more timely in light of the recent gay marriage repeal in California and constitutional ban in Florida, "Milk" recounts the struggle for gay civil rights in America over the past 40 years. Moreover, it poses a challenge to Americans to right the wrongs of the past and ensure that history doesn't again repeat itself. The life of Harvey Milk is further evidence that one person can make a difference.. Oscar-worthy (again) Sean Penn leads an extraordinary cast delivering outstanding performances. Documentary footage is seamlessly woven into the fabric of this cinematic wonder. Gus Van Sant's "Milk" is the best film I've seen this year and deserving of multiple Oscars. It is a must-see, and a call to action in challenging times.

Gus Van Sant really did a fantastic job with a very broad subject. The balance between the personal and the public was handled very well, and gave a good feel for Milk's life.
It would have been a real loss if this was a botch job, but fortunately this excellent film will be there forever to tell people about Milk, what kind of a person he was, and the incredible effect he had on Gay life today.

Fine performances.
Brave subject, well defined, and to the present. But, those old Hollyworld, we must profit, plot poles, first wife, "it's the career or me", followed by the eye candy, tragically scared, bimbo. Ewww!

If you haven't seen a documentary or read anything about Harvey Milk, this is a must-see. Harvey can easily be called the "Father of the Gay Rights Movement". His sacrifices showed all of us that gay IS okay, and that ALL should be equal. This is the real history of gay civil rights. I vote for Harvey Milk Day to become a national holiday!!!

This was THE BEST : I cannot praise SEAN PENN enough! He actually BECAME Harvey Milk. Having experienced the 1970 decade first hand, it brought me back and made me feel the pain all over again. What an OUTSTANDING production in every way.
The actors portrayed each character in such a totally believable manner. Sean Penn was compelling in his charismatic role as The Gay Guru of San Francisco, I wanted to be there in the streets!!! Job well done.
