Adventure on the Tracks

If you loved Speed, you'll like Unstoppable, but probably not as much. I'd give Unstoppable 3 and a half stars out of 5. Based on a true story (really?), this adventure on the tracks certainly does have its exciting moments, but the background corporate and family dramas seem contrived. Denzel Washington is beneath his capability here, but Chris Pine shines (not as brightly as in Star Trek, but this is his movie).
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The New American Tragedy

Film audiences of a certain age will remember the film version of the novel, "An American Tragedy": "A Place in the Sun." In today's high tech world, "Social Network" is the new American Tragedy, an equally devastating portrayal of lives forever changed by the temptations and influences of others. David Fincher's film, with screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (both Oscar-worthy), capture the triumph and tragedy of the lives of those behind today's greatest social phenomenon -- Facebook. The story of the meteoric rise of the website, and of Mark Zuckerberg, is told with insightful dialog, face-paced editing, and well-directed performances. Justin Timberlake is outstanding as Sean Parker, bringing a component of celebrity to the Napster co-founder who clearly wooed and awed Zuckerberg. And Jessie Eisenberg is spot-on as the complex Zuckerberg. Did he really do it all for the attention of a girl? Does he truly not care about money? What were his real motivations for screwing others out of their share of the world's richest pie? (And does that girl accept his "friend request"?) Those are the questions you'll talk about after seeing this film -- and DO SEE IT! Best Picture of the Year so far.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Stunning cinematic wonder

Christopher Nolan's stunning "Inception" had me exclaiming "wow" in the middle and brought me to tears at the end. The audience actually clapped after one amazing visual sequence (I saw it on an IMAX screen on opening night), and there was a collective audible gasp at the end. The final image will, as some critics say, become part of cinema history and will of course be the focus of conversation for all who see the film. Leonardo DiCaprio continues his string of outstanding performances (give him an Oscar already) and Marion Cottilard (and the song "No Regrets" from her Oscar-winning performance as Edith Piaf) lifts the film to a higher level. The supporting cast is uniformly excellent, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Third Rock, 500 Days) and Ellen Page (Juno). I want to see a documentary about the making of this film -- especially the zero-gravity scenes. In the meantime, "Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream; merrily, merrily, merrily, merrilly. life is but...."
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Oscar-worthy "Milk" is the cream of the crop

Made more timely in light of the recent gay marriage repeal in California and constitutional ban in Florida, "Milk" recounts the struggle for gay civil rights in America over the past 40 years. Moreover, it poses a challenge to Americans to right the wrongs of the past and ensure that history doesn't again repeat itself. The life of Harvey Milk is further evidence that one person can make a difference.. Oscar-worthy (again) Sean Penn leads an extraordinary cast delivering outstanding performances. Documentary footage is seamlessly woven into the fabric of this cinematic wonder. Gus Van Sant's "Milk" is the best film I've seen this year and deserving of multiple Oscars. It is a must-see, and a call to action in challenging times.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
