My husband and I saw this movie. I want to point out that the majority of the audience in the sold out theater appeared to be heterosexual couples like us. At the end there was much clapping.
Sean Pean, James Franco, and Emile Hirsch were outstanding as well as the rest of the cast. We went to see this movie because of the strong cast and we both found the story very interesting. I was in high school in Arizona when this all happened, but really can only just barely remember the Anita Bryant part of this story. I had no idea who Harvey Milk was until I saw this film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My husband and I both enjoyed this movie. The characters were funny and we laughed through the movie. After seeing some dud movies lately, this was a pleasure. Several of the other reviewers have provided good info about what this movie is about.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you still laugh at jokes about farts, burps, dodo, and throwup, this is the movie for you. This was the first time that I walked out on a movie ... we left after about an hour at the point where the Guru was preparing food that looked like balls. We just watched Zohan and even that had some decent humor (although it got old toward the end of the movie, it was still worth sitting through to the end).
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Didn't quite work

The characters were likeable and the plot was good, but the movie just didn't quite work. The movie wasn't that long, but it felt like it was a 3 hour movie. I think this was because the movie spent too much time on some scenes.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Waste of Time

My husband and I saw this and neither of us liked it all. This is the type of movie that my husband usually likes to see. The characters weren't particularly likeable and it was boring. It was a who-done-it type of movie with lots of suspects, but the clues weren't very good.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I completely enjoyed this movie until about the last 20 minutes. Alot of action, great characters, and great plot, but then the ending really wasn't believable. I still enjoyed the movie so I'm giving it a good rating.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I went to this movie not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. It is the story of a man who has done everything all his life by the rules, but realizes that it hasn't gotten him any where. What brings him to this realization is what makes the story good. I went with my brother and his wife and they both enjoyed this movie as much as I did.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Don't bother

This is a perfect description (I found this written by another movie goer on another site):
Do you miss the good old days of crowding around a gladiator pit to revel in the sheer violence of mindless, brutal combat? Are decapitations, dismemberment and exploding bodies your idea of a good time? Have you always wanted to see a rabbit turned to bloody pulp by a high-powered automated machine gun? Are you anything like the guy who sat behind me hissing “YESSSSS!!!” as a screaming man was burned alive right before our eyes, his charred body gleefully cut up and served to the mob around him and EATEN? Then by all means, go see this film! But if you are anything like me, and are looking for an actual plot with any hint of tension or suspense, any semblance of a human character you can relate to or root for, or any kind of thematic or cathartic reason to ingest such horrible, pervasive violence, sitting through this movie is a BAD idea. I love action. I love car battles. And I love post-apocalyptic stories. But this film is dead at its core. It rolls around in its gore like an amused serial killer. The characters (both villains AND “heroes”) are stiff, soulless fighting machines. And while propped up by a juicy (though unoriginal) story premise, the plot is a mishmash of fight scene after fight scene, decapitation after decapitation. I wish I could think of a single redeeming character, line, moment or scene in this film, but there is none. Which surprises me, considering Neil Marshall’s last film THE DESCENT was one of my favorite movies of 2006. The complete opposite of this film -- it had characters, a tension-filled pace, and effectively scary blood and violence. If you are looking for a film with similar story elements, check out one of its obvious inspirations: THE ROAD WARRIOR. Post-apocalyptic action at its finest. Made 27 years ago, THE ROAD WARRIOR is light years beyond DOOMSDAY in its plot, characters, action and memorable moments. And it won’t make you disgusted with humanity after the credits roll.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
