Easily one of the best movies of 2008. Sean Penn and Josh Brolin give incredible performances, as does the supporting cast. I was afraid it would not live up to my expectations, having followed this story since Harvey Milk's death in 1978, but there was no need for concern. Gus Van Sant is a genius.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
