Knowing how the movie would end going in did not take away the emotional impact it had on me. I dare anyone to watch this movie, gay or straight, and not come out of it with a greater understanding of how oppression is wrong regardless of who is being held down.
Sean Penn is just amazing and his performance is just one of many in Milk. I don't have one negative thing to say...truly Oscar-worthy in every way.
What could have been a Lifetime movie turned into something really endearing because of strong performances from the two leads. It touches on a lot of themes: coming out, relationships (and their pitfalls), coming from the wrong side of town, class. But it all comes back to finding someone that brings happiness and love into their life.
A positive, well-acted movie that rises above some of the potential pitfalls and cliches that seem to prevent most romantic dramas from succeeding.
