The IMAX experience was a big disappointment. Saw it in NYC on 42nd street and though we were going to be a premium IMAX movie experience, and it was very disappointing. The theater’s screen and sound wasn't any better than a usual theater. The screen had lighting streaks across the screen several times and the picture would go white then come back into focus.

The movie was the best thing I have seen this year. This is the summer of the Sci Fi fan and this movie did not disappoint. What I loved about it is that my mom went and loved it (Fan of the original) I went and loved it (Fan of next generation) my 13 year old went and loved it (never saw Star Trek). If you were not a fan before you got there you will be when you leave!! I will go this weekend and see it again(3rd time)!!! Go JJ

I was very disappointed with the quality of the dialogue and clarity of the story. The movie was so fast paced that it barely gave you time to appreciate the wonderful environments. The time-travel arc was badly done, confusing and unnecessary. The depth in the relationships between the characters was ultimately shallow. The most important of those relationships, between Kirk, Spock and McCoy, were not well developed. And most disappointing was the development of Kirk and Spock's friendship. I give credit to the design team behind the movie. FANTASTIC. I felt there was no real climax, and the ending was unsatisfying. There were moments of greatness but they were fleeting.

I had my doubts. Afraid it would be a mediocre rehash of tired story lines and cliches' I went with as open a mind as possible. So. The casting was remarkable. The blend of physical characteristics with studied nuance came together brilliantly to create the image of the TOS characters in their youth. At first I was dismayed at the inconsistencies in this imaging but then realized what the writers had done. The uncorrected time line shift permitted so much freedom as to constitute an entirely new Star Trek. Re-imagining relationships with the homeless Vulcans, the Klingons, Romulans etc will be a fun trip. AND. Now that Sarek has given Spock his blessing to indulge his human half...well hang on y'all.This is gonna be fun

I watched all the original Trek episodes many times while growing up. This movie captured the spirit of the classic show, but very nicely updated it at the same time. Seeing young Kirk meet Spock, McCoy, Uhuru, Sulu and Scotty was the right way to restart the franchise. The casting is excellent, watching the young versions of the characters become united behind Capt. Kirk is the best thing about this movie. Definitely looking forward to the sequels.

Action packed and full of adventure. All the characters very good look alikes for there younger years and can easily identify who they are. The story line was great and the action scenes were great. Special effects are off the scale great. All in all the movie was EXCELLENT. I can't wait to see it again.

Movie brings high marks for nostaglic purposes, but other than that is considerably bland and a-typical for special effects.
This movie more than anything simply plays on the trek fans emotions of seeing the orignal characters as new cast mates in their jr. years and then being confronted by a plot concerning time travel that creates an altered timeline which goes against the continuity of the original series and the previous films
Not much entertainment value past that, the Romulans reminde me of BATTLEFIELD EARTH!

absolutely amazing! way better than expected! as a trekkie was prepared to be sorely disappointed when they said they were going to frack with the time line, but i was SO incredibly taken aback at how masterfully jj abrams made things different but not unfamiliar and made the whole movie totally believable within the star trek world.

As a proud Trekker, I was a little worried about what JJ Abrams might do to my beloved Star Trek. There was no need to fear. This movie was FANTASTIC!!! A clever time travel plot twist makes this Trek an alternate time line from the get go, giving Abrams and company license to remake all sorts of things and not have to worry about continuity with the original series. Chris Pine was just right as the young Kirk, Simon Pegg hilarious as Scotty, and I might even get used to Syler as Spock. Might. So see for yourself - even if you aren't a Trekker, you will have a great time!

What a wild and wonderful romp to the past of James T. Kirk, Spock and company! This cast deserves a standing ovation for doing their characters justice. I have to admit, I loved the portrayals of Dr. "Bones" McCoy and Scotty the best. Definitely of a must see for any Star Trek fan.

This movie kept the engaging blend of character portrayal and action/fx/explosions that is the hallmark of the TV series. Plenty of subtle (or not) references to the show kept die-hard trekkies happy, and since it's the beginning (except for "Enterprise") if you don't already know the work you're coming in at a good time. The young Spock, Bones, Uhuru, Sulu, and Kirk are all well drawn and likeable in the ways we already have seen; I sort of wish Checkov hadn't been written as such a ditz, but it was a dash of humor. Having Leonard Nimoy as the senior presence was fabulous-- adding a hundred years really loosened him up! The fast action plotting, great explosions and CG effects nail you to your seat. Great ride!

As a J.J. Abrams production, I figured this 'reboot' of the "Star Trek" franchise would be long on flash and short on brains and it pretty much lived up to those expectations. As flimsy as the story is, the movie moves at a breakneck pace, so you don't really notice it. But it must be said that the whole enterprise (pun intended) is held together by the excellent interplay between the cast members. They all seem to be comfortable with each other and with their characters and convincingly convey their potential as a cohesive crew. In the end, perhaps the film's greatest achievement is setting up a solid stage for the inevitable sequels.

This is without question the best Trek film of them all - excellent story, Kirk/Sulu/et al actors who can actually act, great special effects and sets - total win! You don't even have to be a Trek fan to like this movie - inside jokes and references aside, it's just an excellent sci-fi film.
JJ has redeemed himself after the going nowhere and unwatchable Lost and Cloverfield.

Liked the movie overall – felt the villain needed to be expounded upon more… similar to how they played the Borg Queen up. They seem to miss the mark on the technology end making it more advanced than the original Trek. Glad they put some innuendos in for us hard core Treks.

Well, what can I say that the rest here hasn't said yet? I believe it was an awesome and breathtaking movie, with a grain of salt, though.
I personally don't like the "contemporary" camera work, which you will find here as well, where too close close-ups, lack of depth of focus, a blurry background and a shaky hand of the cameraman is supposed to convey authenticity of he spectator being right there in the middle of the action.
To all filmmakers: Please get back to the steady-cam or are you in bed with the pain-relief producers?
Anyway, the action in Star Trek is great; again, it would have been better for me, if it had been shot differently. I am still dizzy, therefore I subtracted 1 star.

It takes a great movie to influence me to see it more than once. I would watch Star Trek at least a dozen times! I loved the cast as they made it so believeable that they were the younger versions of the original cast. I was almost brought to tears when I saw Leonard Nimoy. Excellent cast choice in looks and each character had the antics of the original cast down to a science! Witty, sad, fun, scary, dramatic, kept me on the edge of my seat! I left feeling like I was a teenager again! EXCELLENT MOVIE!

I truly loved this film. I dragged my daughter to it (who didn't know Star Trek from a hole in the wall) and she loved the film as well. I thought the casting in the primary roles was dead on excellent. I loved the story and cinematography
(and, oh yeah, the special effects). It has been a while since I left a theater feeling so satisfied. I think the film will have appeal well beyond the smarmy Trekkie set (of which I am a card carrying member). I am currently my daughter's hero (until I take her to the next clunker). 5 big stars. I hope these actors realize what they have gotten themselves into. I was ready to donate a kidney to any one of them by the end of the film. Thank you J.J. Abrams and company.

Acting was good, and it was an entertaining movie. However, the Science was not in the Science Fiction. The Plot didn't make much sence and wasn't very well thought out. It was nice to see Capt Kirk and crew all done so well, but it was said that it seems like they put very little time into the story and plot.

The positive reviews on this board pretty much hit it on the head. The intriguing thing is really the script which has now fashioned (rather subtly) an alternate reality for the franchise. No longer is the story bound by what has come before. The franchise is now free to go in new directions and leave its "history" in the other reality. This will provide hardcore fans and non-fans alike a lot of fun and raise some intriguing possiblities...will Uhura and Spock go further? Will old enemies now be friends? Will Kirk ever get over his fetish for green-skinned women? Really a wonderful effort. Looking forward to where they take it.

Without Spoiler... It holds to Trek Canon, it is not 100% Trek.
With that in mind and leaving your Trekkie at the door, enjoy this movie for what it is and what it does. Lots of unexplained if you don't know Trek. If you do know Trek, lots of little fun trivia knowledge all through the movie.

A dynamic, fast-paced storyline with delightful connections to the original Star Trek. I especially liked the inclusion of all the signature lines--"I'm a doctor, not a physicist." "I'm giving it all she's got." I hope there are many sequels with this group of actors.

Very high on the fun factor; lots of cross references back into the old shows. Very well cast - the guys portraying Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scottie have the characters down to the twitch of an eyebrow. Entertainment at its best (if you're a trekkie, anyway) and the open door to a whole new series of movies. Got to love it!!
