The positive reviews on this board pretty much hit it on the head. The intriguing thing is really the script which has now fashioned (rather subtly) an alternate reality for the franchise. No longer is the story bound by what has come before. The franchise is now free to go in new directions and leave its "history" in the other reality. This will provide hardcore fans and non-fans alike a lot of fun and raise some intriguing possiblities...will Uhura and Spock go further? Will old enemies now be friends? Will Kirk ever get over his fetish for green-skinned women? Really a wonderful effort. Looking forward to where they take it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
