What a glorious way to enjoy an opera. The movie is able to capture the sound superbly. But the real bonus is that you can see the emotions of the perforners without trying to look through binoculars. It also eliminates the need to bounce your head up and down to read the translations. Cost - about 1/10 of an opera ticket. We're hooked - keep 'em coming.

Tonight we were spared the technical (mismanagement) disasters that plagued the first three presentations of this series; and enjoyed a great story, great sets and production, superb performers. The subtitles were brilliantly translated and there is just one beautiful melody after another. Although I have seen La Boheme at least 6 time, I was enraptured thru-out. Each Act is a gem in itself

I find these movies better than live. You have closeups, see their expresions. Of course, it is not always good. You see '300 pound' starving poet and '50 year old' inocent virgin. BUT you have the best seats, no matter where you sit. Pluss the seats are usualy more comfortable. And you hear the best singers in the world, at a fraction of the price. All in all very good.

Terrible experience, we walked out early in the second act. The staff at the theater wasn't paying attention and started the show without turning the house lights down. The screen was so dark it looked like the entire production was filmed at night. The sound was unlistenable. Too loud, and screechy. Beautiful voices grated, horns & strings were painful, bass instruments inaudible. Great acting and production values (as far as we could see) but what is opera if you can't bear to listen? A disaster.

I went to see this Encore as I've missed the performance at the MET 2 years ago and I really wanted to see Angela Gheorghiu in La Boheme. She doesn't dissapoint , both her singing and acting skills are wonderful . The quality of the film is not the best but let's not forget that this was a live performance , captured in the dark Metropolitan Opera. While attending a real Opera show, one can rarely see the expressions on the performers faces, even with the best seats and the best binoculars. The only negative I've noticed was the soundtrack : too loud . But perhaps this can be adjusted by the theater projectionist .

Although I have seen the opera many times, I really enjoyed watching it on the big screen. It was a treat to be ble to see the actors close up and to hear the wonderful voices..

I've been to many live performances of opera. I have occasionally watched PBS presentations. A friend who is a classical music expert, recommended this venue to me. I decided to try it out. I was amazed. It is not "live" but surely the next best thing. I will positively go to other performances. I will recommend it to my friends. It is a wonderful idea for getting opera to the public in a way that is economical and accessible. Bravo!

Beautiful singing, wonderful performance, undermined by shamefully poor technical quality of the film. Picture was dim, looked like it was filmed in the dark. Sound quality was poor - it was over-amplified, shrill, and the sound of the orchestra often overwhelmed the singing.

The movie was most enjoyable. I very much enjoy the summer encores.
This movie however, was much too loud. I attended with 3 other women who are huge fans of the opera and have been to the Manchester 'Theater many, many times to see the encore performances. They agreed that the volume took away from the performance.
When we go next Wednesday, I hope the the volume won't be so high.

If you are an opera fan, this can not be beat. No need to dress up. Grab a box of popcorn and a big iced drink. Once upon a time, if a singer could be heard in the balcony, they got the job. Now, there are close ups of the expressions on the faces of the singers, and the wide-screen makes the production truly spectacular.
