I enjoyed this opera. The 3D did not ruin the performance. With only 2 slight exceptions you could not even notice it was 3D unless you were really looking for it. What did make me somewhat nervous was how they "tarted" it up. That probably made it more realistic but I would hesitate to take a young child to that. I have often taken my granddaughter to the opera starting at age 4 with "Don Giovanni". She is 26 now and enjoys going to the opera. This Carmen was too sexy for a very young person. That, I realize, is not a valid complaint for most audiences.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I enjoyed the opera but two 20 minute intermissions at an evening performance on a weekday made it too long!

I never attended an opera by Wagner before. Now I know what is meant by the term "it's like a Wagnerian Opera". I've seen many, many operas over the years but this was not for me. At least the silly ones are kept alive by the arias. The last 1/2 hour was good. That being said, the set was a total waste of money. I've seen better designs at productions done by AVA and the like. Some of the cast seemed nervous maneuvering on it. At times it was almost comical with them rolling around on it. It looked like a designer was given carte blanche to create something as a monument to his ego. The visuals appeared STUPID to me. Overall the mechanics may impress engineers but did nothing for the production. I ordered tickets for "Die Walkyrie" before I saw this performance. I am going to try to trade them for something else. I can't see myself and companions (ages 50, 22, 24, and 25) sitting for 5 hours with the same boring set. I do LOVE the concept of opera at the movies: A wonderful way for people who do not have access to live opera especially the performances at the Met. Watching opera on a home TV is not the same. Although the movie screen is not as good as live, it surely is an affordable and accessible substitute and one could see a whole season for the price of a couple tickets to a live performance. Keep it coming.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I've been to many live performances of opera. I have occasionally watched PBS presentations. A friend who is a classical music expert, recommended this venue to me. I decided to try it out. I was amazed. It is not "live" but surely the next best thing. I will positively go to other performances. I will recommend it to my friends. It is a wonderful idea for getting opera to the public in a way that is economical and accessible. Bravo!
