I thought the acting was fabulous and characters were convincing and real. Here's where it got tough for me...as a gay woman i was sooooo disappointed that one of the lesbian charcters ( played by Julianna Moore) has to sleep with "the man." This sets the old sterotype into motion that ..."All lesbians really need is a good #$%^ and they will "convert" to men." I realize the movie needed to have an interesting twist but why not make him a bank robber or mentally ill or ANYTHING but him having to sleep with her. i was overall very disappointed in the movie due to this.

This movie was great for adults, but we brought my 13 year old daughter because she has see The Hangover and plenty of other comedy R - rated movies. This was definitely not for her age! This was definately an "R" movie, not for the kids. The language was raw as were the sex scenes. I am not complaining, it was a good movie that my wife and I enjoyed. I am not a fan of long movies and at 1 hr 44 min this wasn't although it was the kind of movie that I wish was. I would have like to have seen the characters developed a little more so longer would have been ok. The movie was different and funny but the ending left you scratching your head.

Total "slice of life" movie....albeit a contemporary California slice. Deals intelligently with a "brave new world" dilemma..children of a lesbian couple contact and introduce their sperm donor biological father, played wonderfully by Mark Ruffalo, to their mothers. All of the characters and performances are so real, well written and performed that you feel as though you have been involved with them, almost as part of the family. Both Julianne Moore and Annette Benning give Oscar consideration performances and the rest of the cast is right there with them. Not for the faint of heart and, definitely not for the kids, the frank portrayals of lesbian and heterosexual love play are not gratuitous and are important to developing the plot but can be disturbing for someone not prepared for this brush with reality. A must see for the serious movie goer!

From the raves I had read, I thought this would be a well-acted, well-told story. The acting was uniformly excellent but I thought the story was all over the place and vignette-like, with threads (especially about the children's lives) going gangbusters and then disappearing and a number of key scenes that rang false. The novelty of the family composition was refreshing, the humor amusing, but ultimately I didn't feel for these characters.

The acting, dialogue and script in this movie are all really very good .... high-end movie art. This is an adult movie with nudity and s*x and, I will say, that some of the s*x displayed graphically is gratuitous and unnecessary. That said - great acting can be enjoyed in this character-drama-love story that shows what a "post-nuclear" LA-ish liberal "family" can look like - ala sperm donor seeks and finds the evolutionary outcome of his donations. I could have gone a subjective route and allowed my political and moral principles to rule my thoughts about this movie and it would have had 2 stars with a "don't see it" attached. If you can remain objective and politically detached you should thoroughly enjoy this film and the acting ensemble.

The movie was very well done and VERY true to life. It made me laugh and it made me sad. I would recommend the movie to friends and family, but very selectively. Go see this! If only to look at what "the suits" would never green light. Great script (co-written by the director) along with her skillful direction - makes this a must see for any one interested in film. Perhaps designed to make a large segment of the viewing audience comfortable with whatever their preexisting stereotypes were...many of which were subtle but still there. A missed opportunity to do a piece with more realistic and complex characters. Abysmally trite.

Great acting by everyone from the leads to bit parts like Luis the gardener, whose facial expressions were amazing. In fact the emotions conveyed by facial expressions throughout by everyone were pitch perfect. Bening's dinner table scene was masterful. No slow periods indicating great editing, understated musical score, a fine and interesting story with out loud laughs throughout the theatre -- and tears (for me). I don't usually see films twice but I woke up still "in" this story, loving everyone, wanting to know how they're doing today. One of the best films I've seen.

This movie could have been written and played out in a smart and thoughtful way, however, what they did was use baseless stereotypes and thoughtless sex scenes rule the movie. The lesbian couple was not believable AT ALL!!! And, of all the sex played out in the movie, this was the only sex that was not realistically covered. Male porn was shown and heterosexual scenes took over the movie. The kids were great in spite of the rest of the poor performances. There was no character build unless you believe in plugging in a stereotype and going with it - that's obviously what this writer and producer did. A real opportunity was MISSED here.

“The Kids Are All Right” stars Annette Bening, Julianna Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson and Mark Ruffalo in this beautifully told story of a same sex marriage, their kids and those who come into their lives. Written by Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg and directed by Ms. Cholodenko, this is a film well worth seeing as it investigates and examines parental and partnership issues as they apply to every couple, regardless of gender or origin. Wonderfully acted by all of its stars and directed with warmth, compassion and sensitivity, the movie touches many emotions but never uncomfortably and, for that reason, the co-writers and director deserve kudos and credits. I give this film 3 and ½ stars with a strong recommendation to see it and to enjoy it. It tells us quite simply and yet quite eloquently that love, children and family are universal relationships and exist well beyond the labels society may give to some of its members.
