good but disappointing

From the raves I had read, I thought this would be a well-acted, well-told story. The acting was uniformly excellent but I thought the story was all over the place and vignette-like, with threads (especially about the children's lives) going gangbusters and then disappearing and a number of key scenes that rang false. The novelty of the family composition was refreshing, the humor amusing, but ultimately I didn't feel for these characters.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
