Loved the effects. Loved the imaginative and beautiful landscapes. The 3D worked well. The film was very entertaining overall. The plot started out interesting but flattened out to a conventional war movie at the end. The good actors weren't given good lines but they did the best they could with the material.

The stunning cutting edge special effects are...effective and what make this movie worth watching. Otherwise the characters are not much different than those of a Steven Segal movie. The good guys are the tree dwelling, peaceloving, self-reliant, honest, indegeous tribes living in harmony with nature. The bad guys are the money grabbing, violent, take what we want at any cost, heartless military exploiters of natural resources. The main character is the guy in the middle who tries to stop the latter from blasting the former out of existence by overcoming overwhelming odds.
I doubt if I'll go back for a second viewing. Without the Special Effects my rating is two stars max.

Other than the disabled hero, the plot was pretty basic/standard. The effects were good overall but the look of the Avatar could have been more creative; it looked more average, especially its color. What I mean is...not SO unusual or fantastically different. I'm not sorry that I saw it but, even with the excitement of a 3D experience, it would bore me to see it again. I'm glad he's recouped his huge expenditures & I'm really looking forward to lots more visual experiences like this in the future!!!

3D is still just a gimmick, and another reason to take more of your cash at the box office. I found that the glasses made the movie look worse, in that, they slightly dimmed the movie. Don't clutter your vision with this artfull animation.
Old story in a new package. A potpourri of invasion by a superior power, greed of companies, minority's subjugated by the majority. Think Dances with Wolfs, meets Wall Street, meets Pocahontas.
Despite how JC actually made the movie (His number one concern in all his movies. He's an innovator), it is a computer animation film, with some live action.
It was an OK movie, but I was expecting better from JC after an epic like Titanic.

The story was sort of familiar--white man meets squaw, brave resents white man, white man proves he is worthy and he and the squaw find happiness. But the Pandora world was excellently thought out and the special effects, especially the glowing floaters, were excellent. You could get lost in the scenes. The notion of having a disabled guy as the hero was different, but the disability gave him the motivation to really get into being an avatar "driver." Overall I am glad I got to see it in a 3d theater, and not at home on a flat screen.

The special effects were awesome to me. Not for the weak stomach. My wife was unable to watch most of the movie because it made her ill. Now, the story line was a little weak and the Global warming, tree-loving theme that came out was LAME. Had I known that this was a political and environmental statement movie I may have decided to skip it. Can’t we just watch a movie without having a hidden agenda shoved down our throats?

i really loved the movie, and i'm not really a geek. (just sayin, this movie is really for everyone) The cgi was incredible, my wife was overwelmed by the incredible display of colors portrayed. But this was not only a good movie because of it's technical aspects, no, the story really drew you in. I know, it's a really long movie, but it's worth the time. The technical aspects were great, but what a disappointment!
This movie is about painting the Global Warming movement as HEROES and Capitalism and the US Military as EVIL. And using INCREDIBLE eye candy to do it.
Think about what you saw in the movie...it comes across like propaganda for the "Global Warming" movement which is being put forth by those who want to tear down the United States and it's Constitution.
I'm all for taking care of our planet and good stewardship, but the Global Warming movement seems to be more about moving us toward socialism and giving control of our country to the United Nations. They seem to be using environmental issues for bad political purposes. I'm not for that!

Scenes of real beauty and cool special effects and Avatars. Really enjoyable but could have easily been 40 mins shorter. Lack of depth in plot and character as the very cool special effects and blow-em up action sequences go on at length. The bad guys become cartoon-like in their badness.
A few moments don't make sense if you think about them but it is a fun ride. Ultimately there is a deeper metaphor about the treatment of Native Americans upon the arrival of Europeans.
Enjoyable but not a game change for films that people have suggested. No one will be talking about this film two years from now except for the special effects.

this is, by far, one of the best movies I have ever seen! The 3D effects are unbelievable. I watched as m y 4 year old held his arms out to see if he could grab the foliage from the Avatar forest. The one thing I could do without, but is in every movie these days, is the GD word. It was said several times and I don't feel that it added anything to the movie. Otherwise, I highly, highly recommend this movie. It's great for all ages (just hold their ears when the bad words come flying : )

Good solid good vs. evil plot and will always work when told with imagination and sincerity. Some complain that an ex marine wouldn’t turn on his former comrades. They are mercenaries, not military. Marines know right from wrong, good from evil, and have very high morals. Well done. And you can always count on left loony Hollywood types to blame the "bad" corporations for the alleged destruction of the Amazon Jungle etc. No one said the bad guys were from earth, but you are led in that direction until you really look back to the story. A long film, but one told so well that you don't want it to end. We saw it twice, in 3D, and enjoyed it as much the second time. A masterful film that is the new standard in visual and sound presentation.

This movie will have you fixed in your seat the entire time. A full gamut of emotions will grip you. I can't remember the last movie that had me so entranced. I felt every possible emotion. The story line is great and I love how he portrays the corporate greed and sense of entitlement that so much of today's society feels. I did not know what to expect when I was attending this movie. I am not a "sci-fi" type of guy but this movie really made me think and filled with good morals. I appreciate it the first time and really enjoyed it the 2nd time.

Cameron outdid himself with Avatar! All of his planning and research and seeding of the 3D theatre experience really paid off. He deserves his place at the top of the "Billion Dollar Club"

Yes, who can argue with the special effects and realistic images of this movie! The 3D generation has arrived and what a movie to lay the ground work.
What one can argue about, though, is the story. One we know and have seen before, corporate greed and neanderthal militants. But, riddle me this, is it really all that acceptable for a ex marine to kill his commrades? The feeling of over the top liberal hollywood and that is acceptable to be a traitor...hmmm....again, great special effects but story can use some work.
