If Michael Angelo had been born in our Century, "Avatar" would have been his "Sistine Chapel". Yes to those who will call the plot less than original, they're not entirely wrong; but then so are all the movies coming out now a days. The difference is the utter limitless imagination, patience & skill to create a movie that's one beautiful tapestry of color & flowing visual emotion one scene after the other. The special effects of this movie really do live up to all the hype! And yes, the storyline may be familiar, a la "Dances with Wolves", but that doesn't mean that it's not a good story. This movie is not marketed as a great mystery with unpredictable plot twists, it's science fiction. And for a science fiction movie, it does a great job of making you feel something for the characters. It's not just about greed versus the environment. It's about people dismissing other people. But it also shows how there can be understanding if one really takes the time to learn another people's way of life.

Despite some negative reviews crying about Avatars similarity to other movies, I loved it. There are literaly around 200 story themes available to us. There was a book published some time ago on this.
There is not one single movie with a relationship theme that wasn't repeated in another movie. In fact soap bibles subscribe to these tenants religiously. What makes Avatar great in so many ways are the twists and turns you experience on the way.
The beauty of Cameron's Vision. The way he uses his storytellying, scientific and artistic background to put together a seamless movie of awestruck beauty, and touching moments. If you ever fell in love, this movie will pull at your heartstrings. You will leave knowing what "i see you" means.

The characters are believable and there are many twists and turns along the way. I am a sci-fi and science fan, and a researcher by profession. Good sci-fi movies intrigue me. But in recent times it seemed that directors & writers had lost ideas. "Avatar" feels like a fresh new breeze. The concepts are very well-grounded from a scientific perspective. I like the way Cameron has fantasized of establishing direct neural connection between organisms, and the depicted "soul" as information content in neural networks. If one has read scientific articles on possibilities of extraterrestrial life forms and how evolution can create & mould life under bizarre environments, one would readily be able to appreciate the life-form designs & concepts in the movie. Hat's off to James Cameron - looking forward for the sequels.

This new 3D is the future...it brings the film to life .Not the tacky way other 3D would throw something out of the screen at you; it's much more subtle. I would definitely want more films shot this way; it adds to the movie experience...
As for people saying the plot is predictable: this is what happens every time a region is colonized. The native people always get screwed over by the invading forces that want something the natives have.

I would definitely recommend this movie - its a visual treat and a piece of technological marvel. Although the story is run-of-the-mill, thats what makes it more special - taking a beaten down guy-meets-girl story and make it so captivating. Don't be misled by reviews such as "I could predict the outcome" etc. Sure you can, but its not about what's gonna happen in the end, its about getting there. The two things I did not like - a) length of the movie could have been 20mins shorter and b) the real 3D glasses take away some of the vividity of the images.
Go watch it. Its a grand magnum opus kinda movie. Like it or hate it, but be a part of it.

After reading a few of the reviews I questioned whether or not to see it. My husband didn't want to go but after convincing him to go he was delighted. I do agree with the fact that the plot was a bit campy, but the stunning visual effects certainly made up for that. This movie will rock your eyeballs; showing them something they never knew they wanted to see so badly.
James Cameron shouldn't brag too much about the "original plot" - it's basically "Dances With Wolves" in outerspace. White man incorporated into a foreign culture. But it takes place in a futuristic spaceworld, so get ready for unexplained technology leading to large plot holes.
But if you can ignore that and let your eyes (not brain) do the work, it's an aesthetic dream. I completely forgot that I was watching a computer do all the work - it felt like Pandora and the Na'vi were real.

It was...fine.
I'm so tired of the story. White guy saves the natives and discovers technology is evil. The silly contradiction of a 350 million dollar 3-D movie telling me that technology is bad is almost too much to bear. The score was trite. The dialog was bad.

We saw this movie in 3D and it is a technological leap as far as CGI is concerned. The story line is the typical good v/s evil, but it is carried out well and it moves at a pretty good pace. Again, can't say enough about the cinematography and the special effects. Well worth seeing.

I took my 14 year old grandson to see Avatar in 3D and was immediately captured by the beauty of it. Sure, it's common place boy meets girl but with a slight twist. It was a fabulous movie and the fight scene was the best I've seen since Star Wars. My grandson couldn't keep talking about it. In his words, it was just awesome!
