The story was solid if not unpredictable, but story is not really why someone goes to see Avatar.
The 3-D animation was absolutely ground-breaking. A seamless amalgamation of real actors with gorgeous CG backdrops, coupled with the most realistic CG humanoids I've ever seen on the screen, and just enough 3-D gimmicks to make it fun left me very happy I'd spent my money.

I took my wife and 2 teenage sons and we all agreed this was by far the best movie of the year and we see roughly 20 movies a year. It is a must see in 3D. Dont' wait for it to come out on DVD as it is truly a big screen experience.

I was blown away by Avatar. Cameron delivers a film that is breathtaking visually. Much has been made of the "unoriginal" story, but I thought the story was well executed. While not 100% original (what is these days?), it does take some unexpected twists and you really do care about the characters. Zoe Saldana is great as Neytiri, and Worthington and the other actors all deliver as well.

You've heard the story before, same as "A Christmas Carol" and countless other stories we've all heard many times before. What's different is in the way it's told, or presented, in this case. Absolutely the best visuals of any movie, ever. If you skip this movie because you think you've seen it before, you will have missed a truely revolutionary telling.

The effects alone are a great reason to see this movie. The animation in this movie is so lifelike that I found myself drifting from the animated characters to the real seamlessly. It's especially good in 3D
That said, the plot was boring formula. The bad guys are bad people, the natives are noble savages, ho hum.
I would ask all parents to strongly consider not taking their younger kids to the movie. I took my 9-year old based on the MPAA rating of PG-13 for "intense epic battle sequences and warfare", but I would say the rating of R for "graphic violence" would be more appropriate. There are several examples in the movie of personal killing, spears embedded in bodies, etc.

Great movie! While the plot and characterizations of some of the characters showed the obvious liberal bias of the writers/directors/producers, the special effects and acting overshadowed the feeble brainwashing efforts... Maybe, the writers/directors/producers should spend some time in uniform, rather than insulated Hollywood parties, so that they wouldn't be so prone to stereotyping the military. Fortunately, the great special effects were able to minimize the irritation caused by such blatant "michaelmooreisms".... Avatar succeeds where so many other films fail. It transports you away from this world and amazes you with visual delights and characters you can actually care about. A good solid story topped with seamless 3-D that allows you to forget about anythhing outside the theatre. You are, for over 2 and a half hours, part of another world, another time, another emotional state. You believe you are somewhere else, and that is the core of Great movie making. Mr. Cameron must have used the Irainian Marine Corps as advisers for this movie. The United States Marine Corps now and in the future will be professionals not a bunch of cowboys that would kill and pillage the natives. I served in the Marine Corps during Vietman and I can tell you from first hand exprence that the image represented in this movie of a combat veteran is distorted and unwarranted. This image of combat veterans as sick mad dog baby killers is old hat, and a formula Hollywood has used in the past (1970's) to harm returning Vietman veterans, maybe Hollywood did not intented to harm, but it still injured many who returned from combat needing understanding and all Hollywood offered was a slap in the face.

December 21, 2009 was the day that movies changed forever for me. This is an unbelievable entertainment experience. We've all heard the comments on the special effects. This movie was GREAT!!! The beginning instanly grabs you and makes you start thinking what's going to happen. Avatar doesn't really fit into a genre... it makes its own. Few movies live up to the hype, This one does. The 3_D is flawless. It is there but doesn't distract you from the movie itself, which would be excellent without the enhancement of the effects. It is well paced and doesn't seem as long as the 2hr 40 min run time. Highly recommended,

A solid plot line, while typical, is executed with enough emotion and character development. The overall story is not something new, but it's something we can all relate to as history has shown time and time again the true nature of humans. The special effects are obviously unmatched. This is the new standard of special effects and what future movies will need to strive for. James Cameron has another masterpiece in his book of movie magic. I will say this though - be wary of the 3D experience. I found that after 3 hours it gave me a terrible headache, and I tried to focus just on the main characters of each scene as was recommended from various articles. I would prefer to see this in regular IMAX or regular screens (non-3D).
