The protagonist of “A Single Man,” George Falconer (Colin Firth), often references moments of clarity, in which he is able to forget the pain of his past and live in the present. Director Tom Ford does an excellent job of highlighting these moments, and it is here where his first film absolutely glitters. He has made a movie that stands as one of the most thoroughly beautiful aesthetic achievements in years. And it isn’t beautiful just to be beautiful – Ford uses all these elements to subtly alert us to the true mood of the scene, but it’s never so subtle that the message is unattainable.

This was an intense examination of the life and thoughts of a gay man who was under stress. It is a period piece, but resonates with today. A level of tension was maintained throughout as we watch the response of the main character to death of a companion keep changing over the course of a day. The acting was tops. The tension was so unremitting that you would not want to see this movie in a depressed state of mind, but if you're ok, it is a worthwhile, unusual film.

Firth was fabulous, excellent. The movie was absolutely perfect from the standpoint of period details. The colors were gorgeous and every scene was luscious. That is was got in the way; it looked too staged, more like a photo essay. It distracted me from the story at hand. It stopped the flow of things. I felt like I recognized some of the minor actors from either print or tv commercials. But the acting was sublime and the story incredibly rich and sad.

This is a very fine movie, but it is a melancholy one, and one with a stately pace. Colin Firth plays an aloof college teacher in early 1960's California, who is still in deep grief about the death of his gay partner, from a car accident. The movie observes his sad plod through joyless days. One of his male students seems to care a lot for him, even trying to befriend him. Julianne Moore is almost unrecognizable as his old London friend, and a restless, fading would-be femme fatale. The movie is directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, and its scenes are artfully composed. This is an excellent character study, but not a movie for everyone.

Great movie. There's so much there right under the surface. Even the slower moments speak volumes. Deals with profound issues - being closeted at work; dealing with a loss of a loved one; fear of growing old alone; finding meaning in life; g*y men's relationship with straight women; perspective of Brits in America; issues of coming of age; the Cuban missle crisis; g*ys in the military; etc... Also, plenty of humor throughout - very charming & engaging. It's also beautifully made. Loved it.

Nothing less than a visually stunning, emotionally powerful tale of love and loss. Kudos to Tom Ford for his directorial debut. A Single Man had no lull in its delivery of Tom Ford's beautiful vision of George's life (despite the relatively short showing time). This vision is in stark contrast to what's in George's heart at the loss of his love. As George prepares for his departure, the lessons that he learns through a night spent with one of his students remind George of the life that happens in between those events--past and planned--that may capture our immediate attention. It is a good lesson of which to remind ourselves.

The film was a bit too stylized at times, but that was part of its "tone poem" intent, I am sure. The acting was superb, but the ambiguity of all the characters wore thin after awhile.
I believe this was a good start for Tom Ford, but no one should be surprised that this film looks much like a series of magazine ads.

this movie was truly one of the best I've seen in a very long time. Tom Ford makes a wonderful transition from design to direction, managing to make this movie beautiful and artistic without ever coming off as trying too hard. You forget that Colin Firth is Colin Firth. Julianne Moore is simply wonderful and full of life, and Nicholas Hoult makes gives his character extreme amounts of depth. This film is both artistically stunning and heart-wrenchingly passionate.

George Falconer, played by Colin Firth, is a British professor in his early 50's who teaches in California in 1962. George's younger lover, Jim (Matthew Goode) was killed in a car accident eight months previously, and George's heart, in his own words, has been broken.
Colin Firth , always skilled in expressing emotion with facial expressions, uses those skills to full effect here. You simply can't take your eyes off him, particularly during the flashback scene where he learns of Jim's death on the telephone.
Julianne Moore plays Charley, his long-time friend and one-time casual lover. Their scene together - drinking, dancing, cavorting - is splendid!
This may very well be the best film (for me) of 2009.

I left the theatre with an actual realization that this lifestyle can be filled with the deep love I once thought was only possible between a man and woman. The movie was beautiful, moving, realistic for the times. Tom Ford brought an accurate imaging of a alternative lifestyle in the 60's. A major success for a debut. A must see movie - can't wait to own it for my collection.

This is one of the best films I have seen in the last 12 months. Aside from the visuals thanks to Tom Ford's eye, this film captures almost perfectly the quiet tensions of outsiders living in an "in" world on many levels. And it doesn't have your typical Hollywood ending - a good thing!
