I love this opera but in this production the sets were way too dark, stark, and difficult to see even though shown on a large screen.
The volume in the theater was much too loud; the movie started before the lights were dimmed; and the lights did not come on when the 1st intermission started. More attention should be placed on making this a enjoyable experience.
Also the intermissions were too long.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

The singing and emotions of the performers were excellent. The end of the second act was nontraditional, but made sense.
As for other nontraditional elements, I thought the women with Scarpia at the beginning of the second act made sense in the story. However, the simulated intimate act was gratuitous and distracting.
The sets were a little drab at times, but adequate. The staging of the last moments leading up to Tosca's leap was a little awkward, but the leap itself was stunning.
The big sreen HD format is a wonderful way to see opera and to appreciate how great and subtle the stars' acting can be as they perform Olympic level singing.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Tosca at Madison, WI, in Point Cinema:
Excellent showing by the Met. The theater had the sound way too high. I once sat in the first row at the Met and the sound was not as loud as this---very unpleasant. Also the theater passes out information to read before the performance and then doesn't give us enough light to read it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The singers were uniformly excellent
The new production contained bits that were obsene and inconsistent with Puccini.
The sets were dark, plain and somewhat ugly.
The theater was (and also on previous occassions) ill prepared for such a movie. They did not dim house lights without going to the lobby to ask and had the sound adjusted incorrectly

Movie theater was in WhitePlains, NY. This version was the encore session. The theater management should pay more attention to this transmission, given that it is not "just a movie." The sound volume was too high. The theater lights were not turned on when the intermission started. A sheet with a description of the opera was handed after the performance had started. Too many mistakes, suggest lack of real commitment to make this a memorable session. These events can and should be handled somewhat different than a regular movie.
As per the performance itself, it was outstanding - again, as it is always the case with The Met broadcasts.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I really like the new production of Tosca at the Met. The sets and production are dramatic and realistic. Scarpia is even more evil than in the previous production. The singers were all excellent both vocally and dramatically. I love the ending.

One of my friends and I had Lyric Opera Season tickets for several years. I heard about this opportunity through my book club and we decided to try it. This was better than we expected. I liked that I could see the cast close up and that I could really hear the beautiful singing.

The cast was fantastic, they get an A. I thought the interviews were nice, a little cheesy, yes, but nice to hear from stars. I think they should keep the intermissions so that people can stretch their legs. All in all the experience in Arlington, TX AMC theatre was good, decent sound and volume. I didn't think I was going to stay for the whole thing but I did. I was gripped by the drama.

Karita Mattila isn’t my first choice for Tosca, but her Vissi d’arte was extraordinary. Alvarez was also wonderful—the singing both incredibly powerful and achingly sweet. The singer who played Scarpia—fabulous! Loved his snaky jacket. The sets weren’t terrific, but for $20 I wouldn’t think of booing (I might have, had I paid $200). The scene with Scarpia and the 3 women was dumb and out of character—get off his lap and let the devil sing! I thought. Omitting the candles might have worked had there been some visual emphasis on Tosca’s faith (which there wasn’t) or something meaningful in its place (which there wasn’t). All in all, fine singing, fine drama, with just a few glitches--and two way-too-long intermissions--along the way.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A fine updated concept of Tosca: sets that focus on the characters and their story, terrific acting (especially by George Gagnidze as Scarpia, the Tony Soprano of his day) and above all great singing. Bravo!
Unlike others here, I like weekday encores; they work for people with non-traditional lives, jobs and hours. Also, seeing these shows as originally broadcast is what I pay to see. Hello, it's the Met Live in HD. Also, I disagree that backstage interviews seem “forced”. IMO they are well handled and informative for new fans, which are crucial to opera’s survival. And consider that most interviewees speak English as a second language. How well would you do with that, and just coming off stage to boot? Please, broaden your perspective.

I have seen many Toscas in the past 50 years, and this stands with the best. Each singer's portrayal was immediately absorbing and engaging. The voices were superb, the sets did not intrude or detract. Act I was broadcast much too loudly, and there is no need for a 20 minute intermission between acts in the Encore version. The interviews by Susan Graham were wonderful and very much to the point.

Truly enjoyed it. Since it was the encore presentation, could the time watching the stage hands change sets be reduced? We enjoyed the interviews and a bit of the backstage movement, but felt that the time spent watching that and the actual opera audience was excessive.

Don't listen to the critics - this was one phenomenal opera! Only problem is AMC River East Chicago had the volume up so high during the first act (until many complained because ears were getting bloody from the pain of the volume). The theater really needs to monitor it's projections. But the singing, staging, costumes - all worked beautifully!

This production of Tosca embodies all that an opera should be - great acting, excellent singing, and great props, all combined into a well-managed production. The only minor issue is the content and length of the intermissions, especially on the encore version. Watching the activity behind the scenes is quite interesting. Holding the encores on Sunday would also be helpful but none of that detracts from the great performance. Go see!

In case of LIVE broadcasting, the interviews during the intermissions would be interesting.
However in case of ENCORE performance with already recorded before, those interviews are not necessary and total performance should be limited and total hours should be shortened.
Specially yesterday I wanted to go home as soon as possible to see the world series game I.
The cinema theater was not well air conditioned. It was too cold.

Great cast, interesting new production, and it's Tosca. It's worth driving 45 min. on a week night to see- one of the best of all the HD operas so far. Who needs sleep when you can listen to this Tosca?
However, Sunday afternoon is definitely a better time for the encore operas, and having them encore more than once would be good, too.

The opera is grand; the intermissions, far from it. Why, oh why, is it necessary to preserve the two 20-to-30-minute intermissions? The interviews of leading singers during these excruciatingly long breaks are lame, indeed, even a bit campy. Someone should have pushed the delete button and brought the run time down by almost an hour.

The opera encores should be moved to a Sunday afternoon. Evening during the week are not good for many people because the production ends too late.
Also, the City Center in White Plains, NY, is not capable of handling this kind of a production. For the entire 3 acts of Tosca, the sound was unbearably loud, and all requests to lower the sound were ignored.

"Tosca " was wonderful but the intermissions were too long -- 20 minutes. 10 minutes would be better. Also , the interviews were terrible. They were phony and staged and difficult to watch. It's hard to be a good interviewer and if they are not going to be first-rate like the opera, why have them. It's not necessary . People come to see the opera . If they want interviews they can watch tv. Plus it takes away from the flow of the opera . But the opera? Pure heaven!

Everyone knows the story of Tosca, her lover and the evil police chief. I have seen it in London(UK), in Manchester (UK) and several film interpretations.
To me the acting is almost as important as the singing and this new production was alive, and gripped you from the first moment. The singing was sublime, the costumes sumptuous, the staging was original and different. Oh did I say we loved it? RUN to see it!
