This may be the most intelligent opera production I've ever seen. Bart Sher & colleagues did a fantastic job. Even better, Calleja's tenor has a body and warmth one rarely hears in tenors. All in all an extremely satisfying experience.

I wasn't familiar with this opera, but I was thrilled by the performance. The singing was exquisite, but the HD environment allows you to see every nuance of facial and body gestures, and it was astonishing to see such mastery of the dramatic potentials of this work, way beyond the singing, from the tears on one soprano's face to the tongue gyrating during a collatura's high notes. Kudos to the director, the choreographer, the set designer, and the costumer, in addition to a fine, fine cast of talented musical actors... for acting was what brought this musically rich but rather odd story to such vivid life! And the mechanical doll, Olympia, stole the show with her unbelievable delivery!!!

Opera in HD is one of the Met Opera's best ideas. It brings a new dimension to opera enjoyment to a wide range of people who would not be able to access it in NYC. Tales of Hoffman is no exception. I have a subscription to the Met Opera and I go to NYC as well as catch the HD performances. If there comes a time when I can't travel to NY (from Boston) I will still have access to the Opera.

I purchased tickets for this opera online..I exchanged them for hard copies at the theater, and promptly lost them! I also lost tickets for the Rosencavalier for January 9, 2010. I did listen on the radio and the production was great. I hate being a senior citizen with a bad memory. I just can't imagine where I put those darn tickets! Well, thanks for listenint

A fabulous performance, with a single flaw. This is my favorite opera and I have seen a number of different performances, both live and on film. This ranks near the top. The singers rivaled the best I have seen, and I'm talking about Domingo and Sills.
The flaw? Our theater apparently was missing the red gun in its projector, giving the entire opera a dark look that, despite the Kafkaesque theme, was not the intention of the director. But we went for the music, not the color, so I wasn't bothered.

The best Hoffmann yet! (Well...I will always love Joan Sutherland's all-three roles performance...especially her Olympia - but Kathleen Kim's version was TERRIFIC!) Netrebko, Lindsey, Gubanova, Held - all gorgeous!!! And Calleja's Hoffmann - a tour de force!!!! The production...very interesting...am wondering exactly how the partial nudity was toned down for the matinee...? If you missed the Live HD, RUN to get tickets for the Encore!!!!

This opera is not a bit too long!! The live and recorded interviews during the intermissions were very informative and interesting. The movement on stage at the end of the opera to switch from Venice back to the tavern was exquisite!! The costumes, the singing, the acting, the dancing were magnificent. I feel so lucky that we had the opportunity to view this opera in HD via our movie theater. For those who don't speak French, there are English subtitles. It is very easy to follow the story.

What a wonderful opportunity for us in the Metropolitan New Orleans area to see opera at its best. The "stars" were wonderful with beautiful voices. Staging was exciting with creative changes for each act. However, the theater was cold and the sound was scratchy. I think it was one of the theater's speakers and not the transmission. Overall, though, it was a delightful experience.

The Metropolitan Opera HD series continues to bring wonderful opera to our local theaters. This week's "Tales of Hoffmann" was one of the best of an always great series. As long-time opera fans, we have been to many live performances, as well as other HD broadcasts, and we find that the two kinds of experience complement one another. The HD of "Hoffmann" was excellent -- all the singers, the orchestra, the chorus acquitted themselves perfectly -- and some nuances of facial expression and focus that are impossible in the "live" venue were brought out very nicely in the more cinematic theater experience. Bravo! Keep showing these opera productions, we love them!

An interesting production with great voices. The lighting was too dark for me & as such many of the costumes, sets & even background singers were not easily seen. The sound was excellent. Intermission interviews were very good.
