The Met's HD broadcast of "Anna Bolena" was a totally riveting experience. Netrebko's performance in the title role was one of the best I've ever heard. All the other major roles were performed superbly, as well. Opera in movie theaters is not the same as in the opera house, but one is not necessarily better than the other -- they each have their advantages. Yesterday's "Anna Bolena" reminded me, once again, that the movie experience can, indeed, be moving and completely satisfying.
Bravo to the Met for continuing this wonderful experiment, and thanks so much to the theaters that have been helping to bring these broadcasts to us out in the hinterlands!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Met's new Ring cycle's second installment is a real hit. All of the singers are amazing -- tenor Kaufmann is a real find, we should be hearing him a lot in the future. The new set, called "the machine" by the cast and crew, seemed to be used more thoughtfully in this opera than in Das Reingold -- the complainers need to give the production staff some slack, as they learn to use this new technology in a properly creative fashion.
The Metropolitan Opera HD series continues to bring wonderful opera to our local theaters. This week's "Tales of Hoffmann" was one of the best of an always great series. As long-time opera fans, we have been to many live performances, as well as other HD broadcasts, and we find that the two kinds of experience complement one another. The HD of "Hoffmann" was excellent -- all the singers, the orchestra, the chorus acquitted themselves perfectly -- and some nuances of facial expression and focus that are impossible in the "live" venue were brought out very nicely in the more cinematic theater experience. Bravo! Keep showing these opera productions, we love them!
