The second act of Turandot is worth the price of admission even without a soaring aria. Franco Zefferelli has created a fantasy world that is lush, brilliant, colorful, fun, huge, glorious. The costumes are magnificent and the dancing is lovely. "Turandot" is a silly story but so are many operas and ballets. It doesn't matter. The singing is wonderful by both principals and chorus. The finale with the chorus singing "Nessun Dorma" rises to the heights. There's something magical about seeing an opera at the Met and this is the next best thing. I'd recommend you try it.

Very disappointing......transmission problems, several times, AGAIN! especially in the middle of Hearing Nessum Dorma sung by Marcello Giordani . Turandot was wonderful, Liu stole the show (as often happens). But the Met needs to get this technical stuff ironed out. Last time it was something about the satelitte. This time, I'm not sure, but the interruptions were agonizing. What a shame to have those problems. Our theater SHOULD have given us passes for another show. We had a sell out crowd, too." Theatre is not big enough, Desert Ridge Arizona, we have to be there 1 hour and 15 minutes ahead to get seats that are not the front row. They have a lot to do to get it right for such a fabulous idea.

My husband & I are hopelessly addicted to the Met HD series and this was a chance to view a major production of an opera that can only be done well by a major opera house. Guleghina handled the difficult role well and Marina Poplavskaya was enchanting as Liu. This is the 2nd transmission problem I've run across in 4 years of attending most HD productions. I hope it's the last.

Everything about Turandot was wonderful, staging was lavish and this cast is very, very good. Liu stole the show (as often happens). But the Met needs to get this technical stuff ironed out. Last time it was something about the satelitte. This time, I'm not sure, but the interruptions were agonizing. I'd go back to see the encore, but wonder if the same transmission problems will occur. This is such a wonderful opportunity, and there were so many new opera goers in our theater. What a shame to have those problems. Our theater gave re-admission passes, so hopefully people will try again. We had a sell out crowd, too.

I absolutely love Opera and have been listening to Opera music since I was in High School. I have never been to the Metropolitan Opera. So this was my first Live Broadcast
and I absolutely loved it. The production was amazing and the set was beautiful and the
voices were stupendous. Hearing Nessum Dorma sung by Marcello Giordani was like
listening to an angel. I can't wait to go and see other LIve Broadcast Opera and am looking forward to seeing Carmen.

We have been to these kinds of productions before, and have just loved them. The visual detail, the excellent sound, the backstage views and interviews ... all go to make for a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, the whole country (except for those actually sitting in NYC) experienced way too many technical glitches in this particular production to make it enjoyable. We left after the first act. We asked for (and got) our money back. When we spoke to the manager at the theater that we went to, he said that 20% of the presentations of these productions have had technical difficulties. Lots of improvement is needed here! Of course, the musicians were just wonderful.

I loved what I saw and heard. I left after Act One because of the terrible tech issues, which were supposedly the "sattelite's fault." I got a Re-Admit pass and will attend the Encore. This was not a pleasant experience and the Met must address it immediately.

Local theater staff was very helpful and offered refund or later viewing of most disturbing sound and picture difficulties. Though intermittent, the tension of wondering when it would interrupt again or worse, lessened our enjoyment.
The singers were wonderful and of course the staging was impressive. I must admit the first act's pomp and plumage along with the sheer numbers of folks on stage (though nearly hidden in the generally dark and mysterious setting) almost overshadowed the music.
I loved it, but think I love a little less glitz and glamour.
I recommend going, and look forward to another opera, this time with no tech problems.

This was a wonderful production of Turandot, Puccini's last opera. If you missed it, see it on the encore presentation. There were problems with the transmission, causing periodic blips in the sound, and the stage was so dark much of the time, in Zefferelli's staging, that it was difficult to see the performers. In spite of all this, Puccini's vision was superbly realized by the singers, the Met's staging, and the orchestra, and I was left with tears of joy at the triumphant ending, when love conquered all.

Despite the techical glitches and dark lighting, the Zefferelli production was stunning and the singing, especially Liu, was lovely. Maria Guleghina could have been a compelling Turandot if she had allowed the costumers to give her more height with appropriately regal headpieces. Why would she choose to remove all headgear through so much of the opera, emphasizing her long lank hair rather than find ways to make her look more like the princess she was supposed to be?

WOW wonderful production. This is one of my favorite Opera's, I've seen it many times both in the US and in Europe. This is probably the best .. the Zeffirelli style and look is fabulous. Loved all the camera angles, especially the overheads.
It's too bad that the technicals were so bad. This certainly needs to be corrected in the future. Loved the cast, but Guleghina was not in her best voice. I hate to be shallow,
but she just doesn't look the part. Why not Fleming or Racette who can act and who look gorgeous in the role?
It's too bad we couldn't have done this for the Opening of our new Opera House here in Dallas instead of boring Otello.

The "Turandot" shown yesterday from the Met would have been perfect except for the technical difficulties, some of which are recent additions to our Met HD experience and one of which is an old annoyance. We hope the Met is working with the HD provider to eliminate the breaks in sound and picture, many of which came during critical scenes (e.g., when Calaf was answering Turandot's riddles). The audience seemed disgusted with these frequent interruptions. If they continue for future performances, I will certainly discontinue attending.
The second issue is the poor lighting often exhibited in the "darker" scenes, such as when the chorus was singing at the beginning yesterday. This is an old problem with the HD broadcast.

I really appreciated Zeffirelli's spectacular settings after seeing Bondi's embarrasing Tosca production. Turandot is not Aida; you do not walk away humming its melodies, but it is still an impressive musical masterpiece. The singers were great, except the King whose age was really showing in his voice.
Although Maria Guleghina did very well in the role of Turandot, I still wonder if the Met could have selected a more attractive singer for her role? Watching Calaf rejecting a very attractive Liu for a queen-size Turandot makes the story harder to believe. It is OK for people sitting far from the stage in the opera house, but the close-up on a huge screen was unrealistic.

Despite many technical glitches with dropping sound ( at inopportune moments) the performance was fine--- The star of the show I felt was Marina Poplavskaya as Liu- Beautiful voice , Beautiful looks , and a welcome .. I have seen many HD theatre presentations but this rated poorly with the dropouts and lines going through - What causes thIs? But will continue to go - its worth it

I,ve seen this production at the Met years ago and it's still breathtaking. Yes there were tech problems but that's life. It was still a fantastic production. I've seen many Met HD operas with no problems. What a real shame everyone is dwelling on this instead of seeing the beauty that came through in so many ways. Reviews were waaaaay too hard on this opera for the wrong reasons. Poplavskaya was outstanding. The others were wonderful too. The scenery was amazing. I also love the interviews and seeing the scenery take shape during intermissions. Fantastic and I will see the encore. BRAVO for a fantastic job well done by ALL!!!

This was my first Met HD performance and I was thrilled with the beautiful voices and gorgeous sets. I've seen a multitude of Turandot performances and this was, by far, the best. The sets were magnificant and the costumes wonderful. However, the technical problems were very jarring and disruptive. Also, I do not like the overhead shots. The purpose of seeing these movies is to feel like you are really there, in the audience, experiencing the opera live. Please consider stopping that camera angle. I also enjoyed the intermissions; the interviews and watching the stage hands at work. All in all a wonderful experience, and I plan on seeing more of these performances.

I had the privilege of seeing Turandot live at the Met some years ago. It was great on the big screen as well. While the glitches in transmission were distracting, the overall effect was outstanding. I have been listening to and attending opera for most of my life, but hardly consider myself a critic. Instead, I stand in amazement at the talent of the composer, the artists, and the technical accomplishments of the people involved in these performances. Incidentals such as anachronisms of polished nails or jewelry could never spoil for me the intrinsic beauty of Turandot and its performers. I think we are very fortunate to have these HD presentations to keep the love of opera alive and available to many people.

First rate cast, sets, orchestra ensemble and production with two major caveats:
1) Soprano Maria Guleghina {Turandot} was not in her best voice--she struggled in her low-middle range and pushed in her upper range. She has the instrument, but may have been suffering a cold or ragweed allergy.
2) Technical problems: Frequent picture static and loss of sound during many of the arias and dramatic moments really ruined the artistic flow as well as the dramatic development. Moreover, the movie audience audibly groaned and complained each time--further diminishing our ability to hear the opera.
