Disappointed

The movie was poorly directed--too many jumps in her life, not enough on her background, and little on her important decisions (except the Faulkland Island mission). Meryl Streep has a good, but not outstanding, performance. None of the other characters played convincingly.
Go to see The Artist instead!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Aida

Great voices but several of the stars badly need to enter a Weight Watcher program, particularly Amneris. When you watch the opera live, unless you have high-power binoculars, you do not see how heavy they are, but on the huge Hi-Def screen they really look bad. I am sure the Met has many good looking outstanding singers and those should be used for performances that are broadcasted to movie theaters.
Some of the sets were spectacular, others need refreshing. The orchestra was good.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Spectacular Turandot

I really appreciated Zeffirelli's spectacular settings after seeing Bondi's embarrasing Tosca production. Turandot is not Aida; you do not walk away humming its melodies, but it is still an impressive musical masterpiece. The singers were great, except the King whose age was really showing in his voice.
Although Maria Guleghina did very well in the role of Turandot, I still wonder if the Met could have selected a more attractive singer for her role? Watching Calaf rejecting a very attractive Liu for a queen-size Turandot makes the story harder to believe. It is OK for people sitting far from the stage in the opera house, but the close-up on a huge screen was unrealistic.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
