The expendables was the action movie of all action movies. It fit the bill perfectly with its cast of legendary 80's action stars. Though the plot was seemingly thin at times, it doesn't matter.. because its an action movie. Its like asking MIchael Bay to write poetry, and not have a Giant Meteor plunging towards earth.. kinda irrelevant.
The stunts and the effects were very good, and the CG was very minimal, limited to the insane injuries and sick fatalities incurred by the bad guys.
Though some might consider the movie lacking substance in some areas, overall it was a great action thrill movie, and I highly recommend it for anyone thats been a fan of any Stallone movies (Rambo especially) or any other awesome action movie of the 80's.

It lived up to the classic tough guy genre of the mid 80's, which is what I expected based on the hype. Some classic (expectedly cheesy) one-liners, massive endless explosions (at one point during the movie, I leaned over and said to a friend "the entire movie is blowing up") with excessive gun fire, introduction of unique automatic shot gun, sprayed guts, beheadings, emotionally scarred characters, more cheesy one-liners and a couple of campy cameos. If it wasn't for the dark and shaky camera shots of all fight scenes, I would have given this a 5 star rating (for the hard to believe poor plot) movie that it was. I'm still wondering....who the heck at The Expendables anyway? Ex CIA? Ex military? Ex FBI? Ex cons? Ex bikers? I'm really not sure.

The trailer promised smart, funny action, the movie was one loud brainless smack and crash after the other. A sadly transparent plot with misleading advertising showing Bruce Willis and Arnold who had perhaps 2 minutes of dialog - together. The cosmetically enhanced guys weren't a pleasure to look at. I went to see this movie with my husband and his friends and being the only woman that went I thought I wouldn't really enjoy this "man movie." Boy was I wrong! I loved it! The thing I loved most about it was that the fight scenes were badass but not over the top. The star-studded cast was of course awesome and acting was actually really good which surprised me as well. I can't rate this movie high enough. Do yourself a favor AND GO SEE IT!

My dad has a habit of walking into a movie theatre and falling alseep halfway through the first monologue. This movie, however formulaic it may have been, kept me on the edge of my seat with jawdropping explosions and well shot fight scenes under the direction of Sylvester Stallone. Don't go to this movie expecting a tightly tied together plot but if you love in your face gore and action packed sequences that dominate this movie, go see the Expendables.

I thought this one to be one of the great cinematic failures. Though it wasn't built to dazzle in any Oscar competitions, it somehow managed to not even be as action-driven as it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be action-driven when you have Willis, Statham, Lundgren, Steve Austin, Jet LI--right? But, no, someone (Sly) decided "we're gonna add dialogue--slow dialogue--to show we do have talent beyond our muscles and quick-footedness"--and it failed.
Definitely not worth your 10+ bucks...unless you're die hard about your action. (Lastly, Bruce Willis--3 minutes? Really? Talk about holding someone out for the sequel... :(

High body count, good action. Shaky cam was a little to prevalent during action sequences making some things hard to follow. A solid '80's style action flick that benefited from a crowd of eager action fans.

This movie has the best balance of old-school & new-school awesomeness. Guns, explosions, knives, hand-to-hand combat, motorcycles, trucks! What else can I say? I nearly cried when the Barney's Ford pickup was shot to pieces. Man, why do all the nice cars & trucks get messed up?!? WHY?!?... Dude, better now... Even my wife went with me to see it! As long as Jason Statham is in it, she'll see it. How many of you guys can say your wife or girlfried will see an action flick, WITHOUT COMPLAINING?

I could not miss this movie because of the All Star cast...or could I? In the end I thought, this movie was too Rambo like;it had three times the violence and blood than any other movie I've seen (that is the highlight of the movie) and I thought the reason to go back to the island was lame and could have been better and more pronounced.Other than that Mickey Rourke was great,however, although it must not be easy to have so many stars in one place,Jet Li seemed to reduce himself by doing so.I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I am truly sick and tired of anything anti-American and I don't think that to even mention that Americans are bad in the movie dialog is a great idea;much of the dialog was in subtitles in Spanish so imagine all types of people seing this movie.we do more for the world than anyone else and for good reason and simply should not go around apologizing or even pushing "the bad american notion"in movies.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

The title says it all - this got about as close to the "perfect" action movie as any I have seen. Fist fights, knife fights, gun fights, explosions, a compelling story (for an action movie), and some really funny one-liners. I plan on seeing this one again, and I hope they make another.
