Just overly done, including the marketing. It's one thing to market-blitz a decent flick...but to market-blitz crap only serves to limit the positive response, IMO.
If I go in NOT expecting the most exciting flick since __________ (fill in the blank with what you consider the most exciting flick ever), then expectations aren't necessarily dropped to the floor with a resounding THUD.
Way too much happening in the film. I almost felt as if it were trying to be like the other war movies in its ilk--but only ended up looking like a lil' brother trying to emulate big bro.
I've always been an M. Night fan (The Village excluded), so when finding out he had something to do with this one (he only wrote original story--not screenplay), that was enough for me to check this one out.
As I had not watched the trailer--beyond my initial look-see--I was thoroughly impressed with everything I witnessed on the screen.
Usually, I'm more of a gore-hound, but I was okay with the level of it in this flick. There wasn't much to not like about this one. Whooty-whoo!
I thought this one to be one of the great cinematic failures. Though it wasn't built to dazzle in any Oscar competitions, it somehow managed to not even be as action-driven as it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be action-driven when you have Willis, Statham, Lundgren, Steve Austin, Jet LI--right? But, no, someone (Sly) decided "we're gonna add dialogue--slow dialogue--to show we do have talent beyond our muscles and quick-footedness"--and it failed.
Definitely not worth your 10+ bucks...unless you're die hard about your action. (Lastly, Bruce Willis--3 minutes? Really? Talk about holding someone out for the sequel... :(
This was a pretty good time. I never thought about leaving (key element in any review for me), it was hilarious--even classic at times--and I definitely want to see it again (on DVD, not at show). So, while I recommend it to others, I'll also add that it's not necessary to see at the show. Can wait for DVD.
Now, comic-book flicks are not my forte, so take this review with that in mind. I thoroughly enjoyed the first Iron Man; this one, I only kinda liked. It was funny here and there, but something was missing. Something I can't quite put my finger on. It dragged in many spots (I don't need nonstop actions, in fact I'm more a dialogue-lover--but not for a movie like this) and I caught myself dozing briefly a time or two.
All that said, I'm still mulling over that internal question running through my mind since this movie: If given the opportunity, would I, uhm, take Gwyneth or Scarlett?
I've never been more disappointed in a movie than I am with this one. Perhaps the "Scariest movie ever!" tag was just way too much to live up to. Perhaps. But even if it wasn't given that, I thought the movie was--though slightly tense--boring...with a couple of good spots.
The Blair Witch Project is my favorite horror flick of all-time, and I hate that this film seemed to rip off of it big-time. Now, I understand that building-tension thing that some movies go for, but in this case, I think it wasn't enough.
I see that this movie has received only 2 of 11 recommendations, and I must say that I hope others don't take that too seriously (with respect to those who thought the movie wasn't worthy).
I thought this film was brilliant. The concept was different, it was creepy (and scary and shocking), and it had a message.
Now, while I consider myself hardcore and can't wait to see the UNCUT version, I am so friggin' glad this wasn't a PG-13 version as Hollywood loves to do to try to bring in the big money.
Now, there is 1 con and that was the acting/dialogue early on, esp between Mark Wahlberg and John Leguizamo, was a tad stilted and off. But as I think about it, I wonder if that was the intended style/mood that M Night was going for...so perhaps it's not a con.
I didn't really know what to expect going in, so I found myself pleasantly surprised. I'll agree with the first poster who mentioned that there were a couple of long stretches with no laughs. The only reason it bothered me a bit is that it exploded into moments of raucous hilarity (such as Superbad, Knocked Up, etc.), and I started to expect that to continue.
However, a darn good movie. And, yes, Mila is absolutely stunning.
