The visuals were amazing and out of this world, saw on IMAX. But the story got extremely political and preachy, left wing as typical, which literally pulled me out of the experience. Didn't give good backstory for the company/soldiers being there or why "unobtanium" is valuable. (unobtanium = goofy name for mineral, too. could've called it hardtofindium)
In the end, the world he created is amazing so its worth checking out to see how film is changing before us, & if you're a liberal you'll love the storyline, but conservatives be prepared. Cameron doesn't give the soldiers the same treatment as other military characters in had 80s/90s work, as a result delivering an anti-war message wrapped up in a giant treehug.

This movie cost 237 million dollars to make and they spent 150 million dollars on promotion and marketing a total of 387 million dollars. The movie is nothing you have seen before you will be lost in how beautiful the world of Pandora is. Not many people know this but James Cameron had help with special effects from Peter Jacksons special effects team. The special effects are worth the ticket price alone, if you can see this movie in Imax or 3d it is a must. I will be going again and bring on Avatar 2 and Avatar 3. James Cameron has plans for two more sequels and will make them if this film makes enough movie. Go see this movie for yourself you will not be disappointed.

I plan to see it again. Good story, INCREDIBLE vision.
Upside: visually stunning, extremely well made movie. I was mesmerized watching this film, drawn into the almost real fanatsy it created.
Downside: I would vote the story as "ok." As my son said, "Pocahontas 2" except the Indians are aliens. Don't get me wrong -, the script is good, the story moves along at a good pace. But not terribly original.
Overall: don't miss. See it in IMAX 3D as well.

Avatar in IMAX 3-D is the only way to see this movie. I saw the 12:01am showing and it was totally worth the late hour.

Cameron certainly creates a visual spectacle that lasts nearly 3 hours. However, the film lacks the character arcs of his better works. He concentrates on parts of the story that simply move the plot forward and pleases your eyes, rather than what might have been best for the movie overall. Still, it won't disappoint if you're there to see some ludicrous special effects, and the acting is certainly better than in something like Star Wars.

I can't say enough about this movie. I saw it in IMAX 3D and I was absolutely blown away! It has everything..the love story, the action, the suspense..and don't let me get started on how beautiful all the graphics are. AVATAR is absolutely PHENOMENAL and I recommend it with great enthusiasm. James Cameron just mopped the floor with George Lucas and his Jar-Jar-Binks-Loving-A**! This movie is visually arresting and the attention given to details will blow your mind. Avatar also succeeds because it is fun to watch and upbeat in pace; it never bogs down with needless and irrelevant exposition or cursory plot points. Avatar definitely offers up something great for women and men alike and is also a great date movie. It will give you plenty to talk about afterward (and in my book a movie SHOULD be able to stimulate conversation after viewing)! Avatar totally raises the bar and definitely deserves your time and attention. It's a GREAT movie!!!

AVATAR has it all! The world that Cameron created immerses an audience of all ages; from the political battles, the good/bad in people, and the deep connections within ourselves, to others and to our world; or simply get into this world and experience it through the characters. It captures your attention from the very beginning with no dull moments.
Cameron has just given the audience that "gift" that we all have been waiting for, for a long time... It's the sci-fi, the action, the drama, the romance ALL PERFECTLY CAPTURED into AVATAR; not to mention the scenery, no other way to describe it than to say it's incredible. This is a masterpiece. Hats off to Cameron for raising the bar.

Amazing and yes, groundbreaking film. Nothing new in plot or story really. But, absolutely breathtaking way of presenting a new worold and the same old conflicts. Absolutely must be seen in IMAX. Absolutely. Its a very fun ride and you wont touch your coke for 2 hours. You are the one having an put of body experience. We saw it at 12:01 in a packed theater. Everyone was glued to the screen until the final applause.

First of all, this was not a bad movie. I was entertained for the majority of it and like everyone has said before - you NEED to see it in IMAX 3D if you're going to see it at all. The immersion of the stereoscopic 3D is ridiculous and the mocap technology is simply stunning. That being said . . . . where the blazes was someone, ANYone to help JC punch the story/script up so that it wasn't a ham-fisted disaster. I've heard this movie described as 'Dances with ThunderSmurfs' which is surprisingly accurate. Worth the $15 ticket . . . but probably not a second viewing.

I am happy to say, James Cameron has yet to tarnish his reputation, words cannot describe the beauty displayed in this movie, I watched the making of the movie and Cameron stated that the movie was more about the environment and landscape, which i can see why, the world inside of cameron's head is a natural paradise, it was beautiful. Im not going to give away a lot of things, but beautiful is the best word to describe this movie.It truly is an IMAX experience and if you see it, IMAX 3d is the way to go, it isnt rediculous 3D where everything pops out at you but rather 3D in the sense that there are layers and it feels you are looking at these events through a window.

AVATAR was absolutely mindblowing. Such an incredibly EPIC journey, we haven't had a film that was this exciting since THE DARK KNIGHT. The script is strong and moves fast, the visuals are cutting edge, and the characters are amazing. Afraid you will not care about a movie full of "blue people"? An hour into the film, you forget that they are blue, because you can feel every emotion they do, you can see every piece of their life- just like a human. The battle scene may be one of the most epic fight scenes in cinema history. The master of big cinema better clear some room on his trophy shelf, because this film is UNDOUBTEDLY the BEST PICTURE of the year. Do yourself a favor- see it in IMAX 3-D for the true experience.

I went into the movie for the graphics, and watching it on IMAX 3D blew my mind, James did an amazing job. The acting was good too; I would not give the academy awards yet on that. And I had an expectation of story line sucking, but it did not suck, it was actually decent. If you actually paid any, even 10% of your attention to it then you would get the multi-layered theme.

Saw it in IMAX 3D, definitely worth the extra cost! I have seen dozens of IMAX moveis and this one tops them all. All around incredible experience with the blend of live action and digital animation.

There is something about going to movies that is fantastic. It has been a long time since I have gone to a movie that I can say with certainty that this is one FANTASTIC movie that absolutely is a must see in the theater. There is something about this movie that can never be replicated in the home. Then you throw in the IMAX experience along with it and all I can see is this truly is a must see movie.

People are asking me if it lives up to the hype and ultimately I have to say no. I've never been a fan of computer movies and this is no exception. As far as animation goes, it's definitely the closest representation of reality that I've ever seen but it still looks like a CGI scene from a high end video game.
The movie/story itself is simplistic and predictable, but not terrible.
I had to say "no" for the recommendation because I can't think of anyone who I'd actually recommend the movie to. Maybe if you're a sci-fi fan and you like animated movies. I don't like either, but I gave it a chance.

While not a 'great' film....a very, very good film. The real strength of this movie is the production design and attention to detail. After 10 minutes, I forgot that I was wearing 3D glasses and watching mostly CGI work. The film is actaully beleivable in the visual sense.

Aside from the constant barrage of parallels to the evils of American history, it's a home run. Whatever your political views are, you will be blown away by the ATTENTION to DETAIL in Cameron's Avatar world (Pandora). The relationships are very genuine for animation.
