Stylish set design and some good digital effects. ZERO substance, somewhat inaudible dialogue (even tho at peak volume -- it sounded muddy), plot twists that made little sense, stiff characters with no motivation, and action scenes obviously shot against a green screen. The real fun of Sherlock Holmes is figuring out the clues, but not here. The whole thing made so little sense that there were no clues to figure out. I napped a few times, but felt I hadn't missed much.

The movie is OK at best, but it is the type of experience that a hour into it you start to want to get the over-the-top finale that you know is coming done with. Downey again is good for roles he can be sewn into (has he really expanded his reach as an actor, or does he remain essentially the same character you saw in "Back to School" and has found roles that wrap themselves around him?) The essence of Sherlock Holmes was the intelligence of the storyline; too much focus on the F/X wizardry to please the Wii crowd. Watch the first two seasons of House instead.

Movie makes a great afternoon of fun, not something I normally would want to spend a full $9/head on. Rachel Adams, Robert Downey Jr, and Jude Law all are very good in their roles, the villain is appropriately creepy.

Thought the movie was good. Went on Christmas Day with my husband and our 3 teenagers. Went to the AMC theater in Allentown. Thought purchasing the tickets online did NOT save us anytime, since we had to stand in line to show them our credit card. Might as well just purchased them there. The movie was good, great action, good store line and Robert Downey Jr. is nice to look at. I am not an action movie person and I would still recommend it. Great for teens also. My kids ages 14-18 loved it.

Actors were PERFECT. Robert Downey Jr is unreal!!! movie grabbed hold and kept you in its grips from the start. It was thrilling, funny and an AWESOME story line. Leaves you wanting to read to book series classic The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The movie ended with a hint to a sequal and my fingers are CROSSED...I cant WAIT! 2 thumbs up!!!

I went to this movie as a Sherlock Holmes devotee ( my wife is related to ACD). I anticipated not liking it...forced conventions from the books, disloyalty to the original characters, etc. is what I expected.In fact, I loved it and will see it again...there is much that can be missed in this action pact fast paced movie which does in fact borrow from the original in themes, characters and some style. Doyle, by the way, was very much into mysticism which is highlighted here. Very good acting, great chemistry between Holmes and Watson ( Newman-Redford-esq) and snappy witty dialogue, even when predictable, make this a laugh out loud , edge of your seat thriller. And of course, the door is open at the end for a sequel....jolly good!

The movie was better than expected and was thoroughly entertaining. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't say more than that. But, I will say it was a good, old-fashioned Holmes mystery mixed with modern style.

Kudos to Director Guy Ritchie for a fresh new take on both the Holmes and Watson characters, and their relationship! With a strong performance from both Downey, Jr. and Law, along with the entire supporting cast, it was great fun from start to finish! Looking forward to the sequel that will obviously follow.

In typical Holmes' fashion, this movie captured the darker side of the genius and his sidekick. The movie was entertaining even if you never read a Sherlock Holmes mystery or seen an older Sherlock Holmes movie. The movie was a little on the long side and I found myself squirming at the 2 hour mark. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have you believing they are brothers from a different mother! The acting was superb and the plot intriguing. The ending was left wide open for a sequel.

Since I am old, Polish and not too bright I found the explanations by Sherlock perfect. I despise asking questions about what just transpired right before my eyes. I will be in attendance for Sherlock Holmes II. This move is worth 2 hours of your time but make sure you go to church too.

Performances were great and enjoyable. I loved the Holmes/Watson relationship (although it resembles a House/Wilson friendship). The story is easy to follow due to the fact that the dialog is not as overly complex as most 18th century Old England films. The sets are extraordinary and the lack of color works. It is a typical mystery film that keeps the viewer guessing well into the end of the film where it all is cleverly revealed. It IS longer than it needs to be but its never slow due to action, special effects and funny dialog evenly spread out trough the film. I had a good time.

I give guy ritchie big applause for bringing back the detective characters. This would of been hard to pull but he did it nicely. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law chemistry together makes me want to see teh sequel.

The best part of this movie was the recreation of 18th Century London. The actors never rose above the mediocre script. Seems like the editor needed to make the movie over two hours, so scenes were shown in slow motion and repeated. Could have been good but never got there.

I thought the movie was excellent! Both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were very good in their roles. They complimented each other very well! I especially liked seeing that they weren't just nerds. They were witty and funny and very vulnerable to each other, and outside influences. I don't know too much about previous Sherlock Holmes adventures, but I can say I'm interested in reading them. now. They are exciting and interesting characters. I believe Guy Ritchie did a very good job. I plan to go see it again. Dialogue was clever , witty and fast. I figured out some of the humor after I left the theatre.

I am so glad that this is the movie I chose to see for Christmas. I was entertained from start to finish. It was very witty and funny and had the entire audience laughing with appreciation. Downey and Law were a great duo and I just loved it.

Like the other people said it just did not work i fell a sleep during the movie and kept looking at my watch.

We enjoy Robert Downey Jr. very much...he doesn't even need to talk....his facial expressions are good enough. Watching the movie was frustrating because it was difficult understanding the dialogue. Don't know if it was the theater sound system or the English accent. So we can't say we really enjoyed it due to the struggle in hearing the actors. I'd advise to friends to wait for it on DVD.

The dialog was meant to be clever, but I found it contrite and juvenile. Lots of fight scenes and special effects that were meant to wow, but few ever got there. Overall, the parts that I didn't sleep through were pretty boring. Downey and Law gave great performances, they just didn't have much to work with. The kids liked it though.

I felt like I was watching another Harry Potter movie when I watches this movie. Over all a pretty decent movie. Very witty and clever. Don't know if I'd ever see it again though, or recommend someone else to see it. I felt like it could have been a tad shorter too and some parts were unnecessary.

If you have never read any of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels, this will undoubtedly be a fun, entertaining and action-packed movie they will enjoy. The dialogue is snappy, the pacing fast and the acting superb.
For anyone who loves Doyle's characters, however, I would not recommend this film. Although the director does attempt to show Holmes' more athletic side and stays true to Watson's being a stalwart friend and ally, in every other respect the director has chosen to completely disregard Doyle’s characters.
Holmes' quirks are exploited as shticks and Moriarty is more a badly-written comic book villain than a worthy opponent.
To true Sherlockians this movie is bound to be a disappointment.
