'Pirate Radio' is the 'American Graffiti' of British off shore radio. It didn't seem like it was going to be very good at first, but it got better and better as characters' personalities became known. At the end it felt like I was part of the 'family'. The way the music sounded took me back to the first time I heard it. Much better than hearing it on today's FM radio. A great rock & roll nostalgia trip.

We were not sure what to expect -we were happily surprised. The movie was SO upbeat, music absolutely rocking (all 60's bands) - it was PERFECTLY cast, the characters were just adorable, the premise, (loosely based on a true story about radio stations abroad being required to play rather sedate offerings in the 60's )and how groups of rollicking hysterical bachelors went off shore onto large ships, broadcasting rock music 24/7 from the ocean. The back story, featuring Kenneth Branagh, was about the Brit gov't trying, to close down the "rocking ships" you'll have a smile on your face from start to credits. The various stories of each DJ/crew member were simply, unbelievably, off the chain!!! GO SEE IT. You will LOVE it.

slipped right under the radar this one did- good story, well balanced with non ret*rded humor- and it had an amazing sound track- this one sucked me in right from jump- i loved how the political side of the plot wasnt so heavy and the rest just cruised with the multi sided aspect of the late sixties disc jockeys- it focused on the story of the common bond the guys had- and that was music- and of course you'll have your crazy fun but it wasnt over bearing with this film- it was just enough to keep you wanting more- and I did- good flick- check it out before its to late

Superb film...great music...but the story is the thing! I LOVED THIS FILM. HILARIOUS and TOUCHING... The actors that they got for this film are superb. It would have been easy to put Jack Black in this film...but Phillip Seymore Hoffman was chosen and hence, the film has a real spine.... Loved it..it is for young adults....teens...and all older people who went through this time.... the film is Timely.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is terrific as always. Very good supporting cast. I like the story. It seemed a little slow at times, but the 134 minutes went by fast. It's a movie about music and protest. Even people who didn't live through the period will relate to this eclectic group. I like the character development and came away believing these guys really had a cause and were dedicated to it.

I loved it. I had heard of this 'Pirate Radio' ship back then, but never knew this whole story. Didn't know that rock and roll was outlawed in Great Britain back then even though that was where so much great music was coming from at the time. The cast and 'crew' was great in this. I can remember some of these type of folks back then. Plus the hoity-toity stiff shirts in the government were played up to what you just know had to be there at the time.. The music is just fantastic. I have many of the songs in my collection and after seeing the movie have been going about adding more. Absolutely a rockin' (and rollin') good time.

Besides awesome music, "Pirate Radio" does a great job of capturing the genuine feel of the moral freedom vs repression of the '60s vs the still battling '50s. The cast of characters is fantastic -- especially the always great Bill Nighy -- and watch for some great cameos, too.

This movie was wonderful to watch. It had thoughtful character builds and interactions, great excitement throughout with no slow spots. What a collection of plausible, zaney characters! This is a British film that reminds me of the cult film Withnail and I -- and the song A Whiter Shade of Pale plays a part in both films. Bill Nighy is good in Pirates of the Caribbean but even better on this pirate ship. Philip Seymour Hoffman is perfect in this role, yet so different from his many other persona. In a few things the screenplay goes beyond the reasonable: A guy shows up for breakfast who has been on the ship for 8 months and no one knows who he is? The last name of the guy out to get the pirates, whether or not it ends in two Ts? If you liked Death at a Funeral you will LOVE this film.

I was so looking forward to seeing this as I was part of the 60's music in London. The performances were very poor and the comedy missed most of the time. Too much emphasis on the sinking of the ship and not enough on comedy.

Love the cast, and some very good performances, however the script left a lot to be desired. For the majority of the movie, I found myself waiting for something to happen, but nothing really does.

If the generation between the late 50's and the 70's did nothing else we changed the face of popular music. Rock and roll did not make us do drugs get us pregnant, or bring the coming of satin. This is a great movie and tells a story that needed to be told. Feel the power of something that you believe in!!!!! dont be afraid to be a "minority" (thanks Billy Joe) love it love it love it

What a great time! And as far as Mr. Hoffman not submitting an "intellectual" performance, what hog-wash !!! The entire cast did a great job of A: understanding their character, B: displaying appropriate social norms of the time and place, and C: accurately and believably portraying that character living under those norms ON A BOAT 24/7 !!!!
Sorry detractors, but when you are one of a bunch of guys living on a boat, you sit around and talk about woman, woman's figures. The actors here convince you that while they are stuck living on a boat, they do so of their own free will, to support sometthing they feel so strongly about. ROCK and ROLL !!!!!!!!
