With gut wrenching performances by Viggo Mortensen and newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee, "The Road" is a harsh tale of survival set in a post apocalypse America where even hope has turned ashen gray. Following closely to the Cormac McCarthy novel, the film follows the journey of a father and sun walking across the wasteland once known as civilization in search of the blue shores of the southern oceans....and hope itself. Director John Hillcoat brings to the screen a father's love for his child and to what extent he'll go through to protect him. If you are of the weak of heart when it comes to violence on the screen, skip this movie, but if you are a fan of the book, this film delivers in every sense of the word.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is an intense film about humanity, love and what it means to keep the fire within burning, even when the closest people to you eventually lose it. Mortensen proves again that he's a stellar actor and the new-comer Smit-McPhee is a young actor to keep an eye on. From tight close ups to panned out shots of desolate landscapes, the director does a great job at putting viewers as close to the heart of the danger and despair his leading characters must feel. Although I did have two unanswered questions on my mind as I walked out of the theater, I would recommend this movie to anyone not afraid to think deeply or have their heart strings tugged.

an intense portrayal of a world in a downward spiral, but with a glimmer of hope and humanity in a relationship of a father and son. the basic premise is not deep, but what you dont see and are told are just as important as what you do see. the landscape is bleak, but the urge to survive is impressively expressed. the acting is far supperior to most movies. This movie is not for the faint of heart, it reminded me of the great philosphers who opined that the world without society would be violent, brutal and short. We came out of the movie debating everything, a little depressed, but pleased to have seen it.

This movie was heart wrenching and riveting at the same time. It's a very emotional movie that I would hate to believe depicts the future of the world. It is realistic and very frightening. Viggo Mortensen's performance is excellent. He completely gets into his character. He keeps you watching the movie even though there are times you can't bear to.

It has been quite awhile since I read the book so the few scenes where the movie strayed quite a bit from the actual story were acceptable. It is an intense and thought provoking movie and the nearly 2 hours of viewing went by quickly. The landscapes were so close to what I imagined and so realistic. I think if the script had included any more of the gory details from the book, it would have to be classified as a horror flick.

This is not a gritty, stark, or unflinching adaptation of the book, which is as grim and morrose as the charred husk of a world which it describes. This adaptation was TOO uplifting, too bright, and cut out two of the most telling scenes to the state of the world: the pregnant woman/baby eating scene, and the scene where militants carry off loot with slave drawn carts. These would have made the man's narration even more unneccesarry. The grim scenes which WERE shown, were cut up and jostled, failing the unblinking clarity of the written version. While a good movie, it was a poor adaptation of a great book. Too much hope throughout the film and not enough desparation, made the ending fall short of the relief it should have been.

Have not ourselves but we sat next to some folks who have read The Road. One lady had read it 3 times. Our "little group" stayed in the theater through the credits and discussed what we had just seen. We were all impressed by the movie in every regard - acting, editing, script, pacing, cinematography, dialogue, etc ....and the lady who read The Road 3 times stated how accurate the book to movie translation was. She was obviously proud of this effort to portray her favorite book on the silver screen. Mortensen, Duvall, Pearce & new-comer Smit-McPhee could not have been better in this stark drama about the dying Earth. See this masterpiece in a theater! On TheMovieRhino's 2009 Top 10 list!

The end of the world came and went and now the few left need to survive. Viggo Mortensen plays a father who will do anything to protect his son from cannibals, for starters. It's a grim existence and they survive it with the occasional pleasures coming from things like a found can of Coca-Cola and canned pears. This movie isn't for everyone, but it's well crafted, terrifically acted, and thrilling to watch in almost every scene.

"The Road" was by far the best post-disaster movie I had ever seen. And while at times it is difficult to watch, the movie does not have senseless violence as so many movies of this genre seem to do. It was realistic and shows both the "good" and the "not so good" side of humanity. It also showed that in spite of everything ... that the "spirit of hope" can survive in the dimmest of times.

If you are not emotionally spent by the end of this film then you don't have a heartbeat. I drove for 45 minutes to one of the only theaters in our part of MI to see The Road. I fell in love with the book when I first read it and wanted to see how true the film would be to it. Viggo Mortensen goes above and beyond what most actors would do for a role. Kodi Smith-McPhee will be someone to watch for in the years to come. Upon leaving the ladies room, I over heard a lady say it was a very boring movie. A lady next to me turned to me and said, she must not have any children. I think the younger more selfish generation won't appreciate the beauty that is to be found in this amazing film.

I bought the book last week and finished it in less than 24 hours. It was excellent. Then found out there was a movie. I was a little skeptical that the movie would not live up to the movie, but I could not have been more wrong. This movie is moving on so many levels and is one of the few times I left the theater feeling like I really took something from it that would stay with me for a long time. My wife(who has not read the book). Said "That may be the best movie I've ever seen.

Strong visuals, although it is rather easy to tell they filmed much of the movie in deciduous forest during winter, with brown leaves covering the ground. It would have been more effective filming just after a forest fire somewhere, with the ground covered in char and ashes instead. The actors could have taken the roles more seriously and lost more weight. There is a part in the movie where the child looks into a mirror and remarks, "We look skinny." Compared to obese America, yes, but compared to the rest of the world, he looked healthy enough to eat (pun intended). Other than that, they stuck to the book rather closely and come off with a pretty well done movie. Children of Men was far better, 2012 was far, far worse.

Bleak, bleak, scary, sad, tender. I'm a huge fan of the book, so I didn't expect much from Hollywood, but I actually enjoyed it. The post-apocalyptic scenery was great. the bleakness, real, and most of the characters believeable. A few flaws (I never say a movie is perfect) but a great story put on to film. I enjoy thought-provoking films and this is just that. See it. Then go home, eat a huge cheeseburger, shop for ammunition and water and soup in cans and hope you never need them.

Viggo Mortensen gives the performance of his career in the faithfully rendered film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s heartbreaking apocalyptic novel The Road.
After an unspecified global catastrophe wipes out most of the world, including his wife (Charlize Theron), a desperate father, in an attempt to stay alive, takes his son on a long and dangerous journey to the sea across a burned-out America, encountering cannibalism, and other bleak nightmares amid the last remnants of human life.
Artistically rendered by director John Hillcoat, sensitively adapted by Joe Penhall, hauntingly shot in many of the post-Katrina landscapes in southern Louisiana. The Road is a tremendous achievement.
