This is not a gritty, stark, or unflinching adaptation of the book, which is as grim and morrose as the charred husk of a world which it describes. This adaptation was TOO uplifting, too bright, and cut out two of the most telling scenes to the state of the world: the pregnant woman/baby eating scene, and the scene where militants carry off loot with slave drawn carts. These would have made the man's narration even more unneccesarry. The grim scenes which WERE shown, were cut up and jostled, failing the unblinking clarity of the written version. While a good movie, it was a poor adaptation of a great book. Too much hope throughout the film and not enough desparation, made the ending fall short of the relief it should have been.
