This was such an eye-opening movie - more of a documentary / movie but awesome just the same! We speak of our freedoms in America, however, we have been slowly & subtly blinded over the past 50 years or so to the fact that our freedoms (including freedom of intelligent thought & freedom of academia as well as freedom of religion) are slowly being taken away from us. THANK YOU BEN STEIN for your courage to show the world the TRUTH!

I have a BA in Anthropology so am well read on the subject. The Darwinian scientists interviewed only dismissed ID with utter contempt and disdain of anyone who would even contemplate it as a valid theory. They couldn't refute it. They did some very bad science to support evolution. As bad or worse than hard core creationist do in supporting their "theory". Honestly, everything came from something and ID provides that piece of the puzzle. I have been a Fulbright Scholar and academic for many years. There isn't a conspiracy here. Academia can be that self righteous and bigoted.

Before seeing this movie I recommend a quick refresher on what science is supposed to be about. To do this go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki and search on "Theory" and then "Inquiry". This is not required, but I found it helpful in order to better follow the film's line of reasoning.
After completing two post-graduate degrees I have always been puzzled by those who hold religiously to Darwinism. This film demonstrates the fervor and illogic of the Religious Darwinist from the perspective of those who have found what they believe to be a more credible position in Intelligent Design.
Whether you are a Creationist an ID or even an Darwinist, this film demonstrates the danger of the Religious Darwinist to society. And if anyone thinks this is not a threat I would introduce him to a friend who, after completing his PhD, was denied his Doctorate simply because he was a Creationist.
At the end everyone clapped. I came out and wanted to go back in and watch it again. And that is a first for me. What's more, it was entertaining too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

"Expelled ... No Intelligence Allowed" is really NOT a movie about religion or science or even the topics of intelligent design or evolution. Although Ben spends most of the film confronting proponents of Darwinism with a lesser amount devoted to intelligent design, but upon careful analysis of the content you will discover a more disturbing theme. What Mr. Stein is actually exposing it the loss of yet another freedom. This film reveals that we, the American people must not allow the erosion of our free society. Since the founding of this great nation people have suffered personally because of their color, religion, philosophy, ethnic background and even their gender. This movie actually is exposing yet another "school yard bully" and screams ... unfair, unfounded, undeserved and unbelievable. We are a people and a nation that proudly embraces freedom but our so called freedom is not freedom if some are chastised because they hold different views and ideologies. Truly free people can espouse their beliefs, disagreements, sociology, theories, discontent etc., but when any individual or grouping of individuals begin the process of punitive action, or intimidation, or otherwise deny the legal rights of others they are guilty of oppression. Oppression leads to many unthinkable actions.
To me "Expelled" is an alarm bell sounding a warning to a complacent society with a mindset that says, "it bothers me not unless it bothers me." Think about it, you could be expelled next... really.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Ever wondered why the issue of origins is such a big deal? Ben Stein looks at what really is behind the debate and what is at stake. From the testimonies of both sides, you will find an eye opening revelation to the facts...scientific, yes, but mostly the personal facts of why a wall is being built to separate that which one is allowed to think and that which one is not. yes, that's right, it's far more personal than most people even realize, and Ben explains why ideas and theories have consequences...very personal ones. So the big question is, what are the consequences for the theories you hold to be true?

Just a comment to those who take Stein to task for referencing a bridge between Darwinism and Nazism, his point is well taken. The theory of Social Darwinism expounded by Herbert Spencer derived, rightly or wrongly, from Darwin's "survival of the fittest" construct. Spencer's elitist philosophy held that not only does "might make right;" but it also commands moral and ethical dominance. The roots of the "Master Race" are not difficult to discern. Today's extremist environmental fringe (not the vast majority of environmentally concerned who believe that we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the world God gave us) have likewise pursued a Social Darwinian design which holds that because something is natural or exists in nature, it is a moral paradigm for us to follow.

I believe this movie is more about being able to have an intelligent and humorous discussion about the issues. Apparently, few of the evolutionists dare to admit that they are very emotional about this issue and, honestly, narrow-minded. One view is a narrow view -- period. And before someone says, "oh, yeah, IDers are narrow-minded, too", many of these IDers are educated people that study biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and have been able to reach their conclusions based on their findings -- using the same methods that are currently acceptable "in their fields".
Proponents of "intelligent design" continue to offer everyone an alternative viewpoint which is the duty of universities, etc. to share. Especially with the push for "critical thinking" in all levels of education -- what harm does it do to actually think critically while being given more than ONE choice to think about? In essence, why do evolutionsts FEEL so "threatened" by an alternative view?
If you simply don't like the movie, fine. It's still entertaining, and if someone is not entertained perhaps it's because that individual cannot "entertain" an alternative view to his/her own, or simply lacks a sense of humor.
And, yes, I believe in microevolution (within a species -- which is observable and testable), but I do not believe in macroevolution (between species -- not observable. Fossil records are not definitive). Similarities, yes, like a car and a lawn mower both have motors, and possibly made of the same metal alloys. DId one design "evolve" from the other -- no. Both have very different functions because they were very differently "designed".
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I think Ben did a good job at showing how the academic community has become completely closed to even considering a point of view that conflicts with the "commonly accepted" view. The ironic thing is that, as was pointed out in the movie, that's exactly what Darwin's own theory was when it was first introduced; and, in fact, that's what science is supposed to be about anyway; the determination to go wherever the evidence leads, even if it conflicts with commonly held views. I've often heard statements like "the science is already settled", and that might even make sense, if no other discoveries had been made. However, we are continually learning more, especially in the world of micro-biology and DNA, and, in light of what we are learning, science HAS to be willing to adjust its theories to match the new evidence being found, EVEN if that leads to "design".
The one thing I wish the movie had done, that it did not do, was to look a little more at the evidence that does support design. I have seen some of that evidence, and it is compelling. While they did "touch" on it a couple of times, they really did not go into it much at all. Maybe it's because they were trying to reach a broad audience, and most people really aren't "into the details" and would have become too bored. But, as one previous reviewer said, this movie didn't really show much evidence to support ID (which, unfortunately is true). Contrary to that reviewer, who obviously believes that was because there "isn't" any evidence, I, on the other hand, have seen such evidence, and it does exist. What this movie apparently decided to focus on, instead, was to show the close-mindedness of the current darwinists and the fact that they refuse to even consider any other posibilities.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I just finished watching "Expelled". It is not a Christian movie (since Ben Stein is not a Christian). It is not a creationist movie, and does not defend creationism. It is an anti-Darwinism movie, and a pro- intelligent design movie. It details how Darwinism leads to atheism and influenced Hitler. There are explicit scenes regarding the Holocaust (which may not be suitable for children or weak-stomached adults like me). It gives many interviews with scientists on both sides. It is definitely not a "kids movie". I am a better informed adult, having seen it. ( Darwinism is a religion and not science.)

This film is about the difficulties presented to scientists, imposed upon them by their peers, when they entertain the possibility of Intelligent Design as the explanation for the evidence encountered regarding the origin of life. It's not completely perfect, but this film is very good at exposing the run-around that many scientists give when you question what they really think about evolution. Richard Dawkins, a famous author and strict proponent of evolution, actually admits the possibility of Intelligent Design right in the film. Something he'd probably be hard pressed to do on a more mainstream TV interview. Once again, this movie isn't perfect, but whether you believe in Macro-evolution, Creationism, Intelligent Design, or something else, it doesn't matter. This film is one that everyone should see. It is a clean movie also. No garbage.

This movie will make you think about what is being taught to the public as fact and why. Real science is not afraid to ask ALL the questions, but as Ben Stein so aptly shows in this film, some questions are completely off-limits and anyone who dares to ask them risks destroying his or her academic career. Science in America has become political and narrow-minded. Anyone who questions the adequacy of Darwinism as explanation for the origins of life is vilified and ostracized from the scientific community. But it's interesting to see who looks like a fool in the end.

This was an amazing documentary exosing the hypocricy of those who proclaim themselves to be proponents of the First Amendment, free thought, free exchange of ideas (so long as the ideas don't challenge their religion: Darwinism).
So let's say there is no intelligent design, why not just dismiss the idea comically as you would dismiss any other wacky idea? Why get so angry? I think it is because the idea of "intelligent design" hints at the possible existence of a God, and if scientist were allowed to openly play with ideas that might point to Him (because it already does), then all the people who have lived their life under the belief that they are accountable to no one, have to face the possiblity of an Intelligence, an author of a Moral Code, that they migh be held accountable to, and it is not comfortable.
There are many ideas initially suppressed by science which caught up with Scripture, the earth being round, the stars incalculable, etc.
If intelligent design is such an unintelligent theory, then let people evaluate and decide for themselves; why fear?

I must say this was a great Documentary on this debate. Doug posted "The premise is that there exists a conspiracy to suppress an allegedly legitimate scientific theory called "Intelligent Design." I must say I will give you proof in all parts of science. One thing I hate is when people say things that they really do not know anything about. Doug then says "No doubt the most offensive aspect of this movie is its clumsy association of "Darwinism" to the holocaust." Doug, you need to study history. Hitler and stalin gave into Evolutionary thinking.
Anyway, I must say good going Ben Stein. I will also continue to show through science that this Earth was created and is only about 6 thousand years old.

Excellent movie for those that can handle the truth. To ignore the advancements in the sciences since Darwins theory would exhibit
intellectual dishonesty. Dawin's criteria for rejection of his theory of evoluion has already been met. It is so refreshing to actually see an intelligent and thoughtful film. Darwin vs Intelligent Design is not a new topic. It is an age old debate. I appreciated Ben Stein going right to the source of those in the scientific and academic community on both sides of the issue to get his information. Regardless of how any one person feels about the debate there should be some type of response to the lack of freedom occuring in our country with regard to science and academics. Each person should have the opportunity to ask the tough questions and then seek out the RIGHT answer.

The Movie begins with a nice premise, and then veers off the mark. Academic freedom is being attacked on many fronts, one need only look at the global warming debate to see another area in need of exposure. The movie then abandons this interesting premise and goes on a tirade against evolution and its proponents. I find the lack of objectiveness Ben Stein shows in the film to be well beneath his usual standards. Finally, I feel the movie slips from being a dialogue to becoming propaganda in the final half hour. Ben Stein uses the horrors of WWII Germany and the misguided reliance of the regime on Darwinism to validate genocide. This changes the whole movie into an emotional plea and frames evolution supporters as somehow facilitating a modern day emergence of eugenics. Shame on Ben Stein

Not a Scientific Debate and Not a Religious Movie

If you're interested in an actual scientific debate, this is not the movie for you. That is NOT the premise of this movie. The point of this movie is to show that there is a whole side of "science" that is being silenced so to speak. (that is if you believe origin science to be actual science since it is not repeatable and not observable which are two of the requirements for testing a hypothesis--I consider origin science a "religion" no matter what side you are on and only hold to operational science).
The point of this movie is to show there is an overwhelming hostility in the science community towards any view that goes against Darwinism. I witnessed this first-hand as a biology major at ISU where professors openly made fun of ID.
Since this movie is NOT about Intelligent Design, but rather about the fact that it is not even allowed to be considered an option, they do not try to prove that ID is the correct view (or even that evolution is not the correct view). They just show examples of how people have lost their jobs for even mentioning ID and show the logical end for believing in evolution--from evolutionists own mouths. The people they show on both sides are highly intelligent scientists with double doctorates in molecular biology, etc.--not "religious" fanatics.
Which is my second point...this is not a "religious" movie. If you are wanting a Christians' view point on Intelligent Design, you will not get it. They are quick to point out that they are talking about ID not Creationism....there is a difference. Creationism includes the flood and growing from there. ID just states that "some intelligence" put things into motion so to speak instead of life just happening. They are not necessarily against Creationism, but again the point is not what is correct, but rather that there is a wall that stops scientists from even LOOKING at anything else.
I find it funny that one reviewer stated:
"This movie does represent a interesting approach to the scientific method. If the producers of the movie get their way, we'll no longer have to wait for legitimate scientific discourse, peer-reviewed experimental results, and verification/reproduction of experiments to guide our scientific understanding of the world. Instead, ideologues will create propaganda to influence politicians to require teaching students ideas which experts in the field vehemently disagree with."
That is EXACTLY what this movie says evolutionists are doing.
Darwin challenged the commonly held viewpoints of his day...now if you challenge HIS commonly held viewpoint, you are considered a religious wacko--even if you are an agnostic!
The point of this movie is not to show that ID has been "proven" correct, but rather to show that it is not even being allowed to be tested!
I think it is an excellent movie and if you go into it with an open mind instead of coming at it from an angle of "Intelligent Designers are religious wackos", you will see that the freedom of academia--of studying and learning to FIND the truth--is being stifled in this instance. What are evolutionists afraid of? That their "religion" will be proven wrong...and that is unacceptable.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I went into this movie with no expectations, having only seen one preview that only explained the premise. I would invite everyone to see this movie. I would also invite this movie's opponents to *try* to refute the facts this movie brought up.
Here is what I came away with:
There are prominent people in the scientific community that are willing to throw out one of the most basic principles of the scientific method (question everything) due to their own pride and fear.
There are organizations actively trying to keep those questions from being asked, even in places where the questions are welcome.
Finally, the people who see the movie that don't come away wondering about the total accuracy of the Evolution Theory (or Darwinism, if you must) weren't paying attention. Their pride was undoubtedly stung and they probably spent half the movie trying to think up arguments against what they're seeing.
This movie tells the truth. It presents facts, unpopular facts, but facts nonetheless.
The negative reviews I have read don't actually address the cases presented in the movie or even try to refute the facts of the extreme improbability of life's spontaneous generation on this planet! Instead they ask "why wasn't so-and-so interviewed... they would have set you straight" or say "it's all lies and propaganda."
The fact that was presented that no one seems to get?
Intelligent Design theory is scientific, not religious. The ID theorists are willing to question who the intelligent designer is and only want the point of view investigated to see if the theory answers questions unanswered by evolutionists.
The crowing point of the movie as far as my own personal enjoyment is concerned?
Hearing Richard Dawkins say (paraphrasing), "Life on this planet may have come from another race of people who have evolved to the point where they could design a self-replicating, single-cell organism that they could use to seed our planet." I have trouble even quoting that with a straight face!! How would this anti-intelligent design scientist not hear the words he used? Out of his own mouth, he admitted that life on our planet may have been designed!
And he calls *us* idiots....
Yes, I recommend this movie.
