As someone who has enjoyed the music over the years, but is not a die hard fan, and has never been to a Stones concert - the movie blew me away. Just go to get lost in the sound, the lights, and these guys in their sixties who can still make it happen.

First, let me say that I love the Stones and have been listening to them since the 60's, know their music really well and appreciate the fact that a film has been made of them in their 60's.
I found the film a little disappointing, not because the Stones are a reflection of their age but because I feel that Scorcese didn't quite get inside the group. The film felt like a film of a concert ,by a fan, not an insider. We could feel Scorcese's envy and adoration of Jagger and sometimes the light reflected over to Richards but as I watched I didn't get a sense that Scorcese had a clue about the band as a whole, or a sense of how great Keith Richards is as a guitarist or even know them as individuals. The camera continually leered at Jagger, his jowls, his thin dancing body, moving across the stage, upstage and downstage in tight closeups. Ocassionally there were old clips of the Stones, mostly Mick being interviewed which didn't reveal a great deal but were more a comparison of the old and young Mick Jagger and how he has aged. We got a little of his irony and aloofness but not enough to really say it. The one departure which worked well was when the screen was split between Jagger and Richards both responding to the same question by interviewers but again it wasn't groundbreaking or really informative.
The most moving moment in the film for me was when Buddy Guy was on stage and Keith Richards gave him his guitar, it seemed spontaneous and heartfelt. One of the two spontaneous moments in the film. Christina Aguilar gave a really rousing performance also and it was really the first song in which you see Jagger not telephoning his performance in.
I still love the Stones but when I think of other films of concerts, this one doesn't stand out as one that penetrates deeply but merely skims the surface of the concert even though the venue was an amazing venue in which to see the Stones(The Beacon Theatre). It never really feels intimate even though the room is certainly more intimate than most Stones concerts of the past decade. I would have liked to see a lot more of the coming together of Scorcese with the Stones; hear their offstage conversations and interactions before the actual concert. I feel too that Scorcese wanted to compare earlier and later Stones work and lives but he doesn't offer enough to really satisfy the balance of the film . As a diehard Stones fan, I would say you must see the film but lower your expectations!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not only are the Stones still going strong, they haven't lost a bit of their appeal or their talent. Despite the years that have passed, Mick still moves like he did, and commands the stage.
Scorsese did an amazing job with this - everything flowed seamlessly, and it was nice to see a little of the behind-the scenes action. There were a couple old clips, and the content was really funny. It would have been easy to include too much old footage, but this was just enough...perfect!
It really felt as if you were were right there, but with an impossibly great seat that allowed you to see each band member from many angles. The sound was incredible!
Back when it was the Beatles vs. the Stones, I was ALWAYS on the side of the Beatles, but through the years, I've enjoyed the Stones as well. This documentary gave us a peek at how they interact and to see how very much they love what they do. I enjoyed noticing how many younger people there were in the audience, being blown away by a group from their parents' era!
If given the chance, I would have sat through the movie again, right then. Brilliant!

The immediacy of the concert experience is unbeatable. The film rocks...no, let me correct that, Q-U-A-K-E-S. And what are these 60+s doing to be able to do what they do...yeah, as one professional critic wrote: "s(), d()s and rock n roll"; no doubt. Very enjoyable; couldn't keep still all throughout.

I'm a life-long Stones fan (since 1963) so I thought it was great. The movie adaptly catches the incredible energy and high quality that these guys bring to each and every concert. I wish I had their energy! The documentary inserts are good and the guest appearances add nicely to the concert. I look forward to buying the DVD

Shine A Light is a really good video of a Rolling Stones concert, but offers very little entertainment as the story of a rock and roll band. I was disappointed because I expected to see some new interviews or behind-the-scenes footage of the band, or even just a casual conversation between the Stones and Scorcese about why the movie was made. Clearly it was just to make money for all involved, not to offer fans new insights or perspective on the Stones career. The old video clips in between the concert songs seemed like the lazy way out, and I kept wishing for something more current to go alongside them.
That said, the performance by Jack White with Jagger on "Loving Cup" was worth the price of the whole movie. Their voices sounded incredible together, and Jack White looked so genuinely psyched to be singing up there on stage with the Stones! Plus Mick forget about the audience for a moment and actually seemed to be having fun, which i felt was much more pleasurable to watch than some of his crazed marionette/orchestra conductor moves.
I didn't know much about Buddy Guy before seeing Shine A Light, but the one song has turned me into a huge fan. The contrast of his ultra-calm, deep voice and Jagger's intense energy was awe-inspiring. Richards, Ron Wood and Guy also seemed to be dueling with guitars.
Lots of good stuff to see and hear in this movie, just don't expect any "information" like, how did they get Charlie Watts to come back and play drums? Didn't he retire?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This could be the best rock and roll movie ever! Scorsese not only captures the magic of the Stones, but captures the magic of all rock and roll. Buddy Guy is a true highlight. I love after his performance that Keith pays him the ultimate tribute by giving him his guitar! Real class and big heart that Richards. Also, Scorsese captures everything, even a close up as Keith blows a cigarette out of his mouth like a volcano going off during one of Buddy's most electrifying riffs.
And Mick Jagger exudes more energy at 60 something than 10 other frontmen I've seen in the last 10 years! Ron Wood shows his soul as one of the two most important rock guitarists on the planet and we witness, via great sound, how the magic of those two guitars makes that unique Rolling Stones sound. Charlie Watts is awesome--no extra drummers needed here. And when the DVD comes out, if anyone asks you to explain what rock and roll is, all you'll need to do is play "All Down The Line." And you can say, "THIS, THIS IS WHAT ROCK AND ROLL IS!"
This film is not to be missed!

If you like the stones or concert movies in general, this comes highly reccomended. The camerawork is great, the sound is fantastic, and to top it off, the Stones are in top form. Casual fans will be happy to hear some hits while hardcores will be more into some of the the deep cuts from their heyday in the early 70s.

I attended the Beacon Theater concert the night of the filming. It was phenomenal. As musicians, The Stones are better than ever. It's chilling to hear them perform a classic you've heard a thousand times but played with a new rhthym and tempo, keeping it fresh and exciting. I will say that the seats in first two rows of the audience were removed, replaced by paid actors, good looking young kids who were instructed to stand and wave and look excited. But that's Hollywood. As a rock and roll show, the Stones just can't be beat. I saw them again at Radio City (sloppy) and the Garden that same year. The Garden is where Marty might have made his movie. Watching them interact with an audience that size reminds you how great they really are. The band displayed a certain reverence throughout the show. Their shows are long, close to 30 songs and they give it everything they've got. The film is intercut with early interview footage of the band which was hilarious. The parallels between Martin Scorsese in this film and Melvin Belli in Gimme Shelter are unmistakable. These guys are the original rockers and still, the greatest rock and roll band in the world.

Good movie, the Stones are great, but the sound was mixed strangely, so that whenever we are on a shot( i.e. the guitar) we hear that instrument above all else. It made for a very uneven mix..were they trying to mix out all the flubs? Very confusing. The CD was mixed much better. Why didn't the filmakers just stick with one good mix of each song?

Scorsese has cuptured the essence of the Rolling Stones in this film. He gives us the rare glimpse into the individuals as they are doing what they do best.......playing rock and roll. From Mick dancing and weaving across the stage, directing the band, to Keith and Ron's knowing glance, to Charlie's sigh of relief, we are able to witness firsthand the reason the Stones have been making music for 45 plus years....they love what they do. As for the music, it stands on its own, and IMAX sound is great. A must see for fans, and an eye opener for the inquisitive.

I saw the new Rolling Stones movie (concert) Shine A Light this past Saturday night (4/5/08), and it was great. I have been fortunate enough to have seen the Stones live a number of times, and let me tell you I found myself applauding between songs, this was as close to being in the audience as you can get. I saw the show in a digital theater, but I am definately going to catch it in Imax as well. This a Must See for any Stones fans, the setlist was great, they really mixed it up with a lot of the classics, and some rarely played numbers that the hardcore fans will appreciate. The only (and I hate to say this) disappointment was that I wish that they left in a bit more of the between song banter that Mick is famous for, but at a running time of 2+ hours I guess that I rather they cut that than the music. I can't wait for the CD & DVD (hopefully with a bunch of bonus footage...hint...hint) to come out. Now that you've read this get a ticket from movietickets.com and go see the show, it's that good.

Okay, the Stones have had to my way of counting three bigscreen films ("Gimme Shelter," "Ladies and Gentlemen ..." and "Let's Spend the Night Together") as well as a Pay Per View Special from every tour since 1989 and this is easily the best document of their live performance ever (or at least since "Gimme Shelter"). No surprise with Martin Scorcese in the drivers' seat.
