I hope people don't stay away from this film because of the subject matter. It is a truly thoughtful and emotional portrait of a tragedy that is becoming all too familiar in the American landscape. It is a definite step toward understanding, not only the cause, but the aftermath of these events. It doesn't end when the shooter dies.
I really liked this film, as did my whole family. I am not sure why it seems to have gotten mixed reviews from the professionals. A lot of the audience reviews seem to indicate people are taking children too young for any film (2 years old??? Come on).
I also liked the fact that they didn't throw in a bunch of hip, pop culture references. Cute in one or two movies, but it doesn't need to be in every film, I am glad "Despereaux' stuck to traditional storytelling.
I really liked this. Although it is "user friendly" for anyone who has never seen an episode of the series, I don't know that I would recommend it for anyone who disliked the series. It was much more like a first season episode, free standing, nothing to do with the Alien Abduction plot that engulfed the later seasons. I thought the movie took some bold chances in being "headier" than most summer action films. Clearly there's been a lot of "water under the bridge' for the two main characters and that was there, but not commented on and I appreciated that. Lots of subtext regarding the battle between religion and science that I liked. Some folks never like mixing action and politics, but I loved it. In fact, I liked this MUCH better than the first big screen X-Files and more than the later episodes of the series when Mulder and Scully were simply not even there. Welcome back old friends, I hope there is an X-Files 3.
Okay, the Stones have had to my way of counting three bigscreen films ("Gimme Shelter," "Ladies and Gentlemen ..." and "Let's Spend the Night Together") as well as a Pay Per View Special from every tour since 1989 and this is easily the best document of their live performance ever (or at least since "Gimme Shelter"). No surprise with Martin Scorcese in the drivers' seat. If you are a fan, you must see this.
