Shine A Light is a really good video of a Rolling Stones concert, but offers very little entertainment as the story of a rock and roll band. I was disappointed because I expected to see some new interviews or behind-the-scenes footage of the band, or even just a casual conversation between the Stones and Scorcese about why the movie was made. Clearly it was just to make money for all involved, not to offer fans new insights or perspective on the Stones career. The old video clips in between the concert songs seemed like the lazy way out, and I kept wishing for something more current to go alongside them.
That said, the performance by Jack White with Jagger on "Loving Cup" was worth the price of the whole movie. Their voices sounded incredible together, and Jack White looked so genuinely psyched to be singing up there on stage with the Stones! Plus Mick forget about the audience for a moment and actually seemed to be having fun, which i felt was much more pleasurable to watch than some of his crazed marionette/orchestra conductor moves.
I didn't know much about Buddy Guy before seeing Shine A Light, but the one song has turned me into a huge fan. The contrast of his ultra-calm, deep voice and Jagger's intense energy was awe-inspiring. Richards, Ron Wood and Guy also seemed to be dueling with guitars.
Lots of good stuff to see and hear in this movie, just don't expect any "information" like, how did they get Charlie Watts to come back and play drums? Didn't he retire?
