I, like any movie lover, thoroughly enjoyed the first three Indiana Jones movies--heck I loved them--and appreciated those films for bringing to the screen adventure stories that are, in my opinion, completely unique and unequaled in film history. When I heard the fourth installment was being made, I was excited, yet concerned that twenty years later, this franchise was going to be resurrected to make a few bucks. And given George Lucas's track record with resurrecting old franchises, I had reason to be concerned.
To get right to the point, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was--let me put it this way--a far cry from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," or even "Temple of Doom" for that matter. It was an overdone mess of a Hollywood big budget movie.
One of the reasons why the first three movies were so enjoyable was that Indiana (as well as the other characters) were human, and if you see the movie, you'll know what I mean. The lines "I survived a nuclear blast" should never be uttered by a character in any movie.
The story was lacking and the dialogue could have been stronger. Raiders and the Last Crusade did a terrific job of making old religious lore into something believable, and thrived on the battle between good and evil. The only way to describe this movie is that it was somewhat emotionless, not as engaging, and certainly less exciting (and keep in mind, excitement isn't only generated by intense action sequences). I don't know if anybody remembers what they felt when they were watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, and they saw Indiana go into the map room and hold the staff that pointed out the location of the Well of Souls in the city of Tanis. It was captivating, and this is a feeling that must have been left on the cutting room floor during the editing of "the Crystal Skull."
This is showing the movement of Hollywood big budget flicks--explosions and cheap dialogue are more important than overall storyline. If you are like the majority of the American population and liked Transformers and National Treasure 2, then you will probably love this movie. You will be like the other 75% of the people in the theater I was in that applauded this movie. Go see it, enjoy it, then talk about how wrong this review was. But if you liked Raiders for all the right reasons, it'll be hard to appreciate much from "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
Bottom Line: this movie only passes because it's character and the movies before it are so beloved, and because there were moments that reminded us of what the Indiana Jones franchise was and should be.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but it's the worse Indy film by far. Just poor writing! It seemed like they pulled scenes from other movies (flops) whenever they were at an impass & didn't know what direction to take the film. I saw clear steals from King Kong (with Jack Black), The Mummy 2, and Return of the Jedi to name a few. My husband says that I'm being too critical & that I should see the film again, but I cannot see me spending another $12 plus popcorn & soda. Oh well, I hope this helps someone else. I would recommend you see it, but please make it a matinee or an early $6 AMC ticket.

OK, so it was the midnight show. Indiana Jones is worth losing sleep over, right? Definitely! With homages to past Indiana Jones films and an Indy and Marion Ravenwood that weathered the passing years exceedingly well, a score which brings back some of my favourite musical themes and a fast-paced script directed as only Spielberg can, what's not to love about this film? Cate Blanchett is as good a villain as she is an Elf Queen or Queen of England. Shia La Boeuf has big footsteps to follow in, but takes the stride well, and Ray Winstone, a long way from Will Scarlet in "Robin of Sherwood" is wonderful as Mac. A definite Summer Sizzler!

Honestly this was one of the worst movie that i have seen this year. THe entire idea of aliens common, who would really say yes to this idea for a Indy movie. There was way to much cg for this and i doesnt feel like an Indy movie. The story seems like it was written by kid who was smoking way to much and lines were worse. Its not bad if you want to waste about 10$ but this movie is not even a rental, yes it is that bad.

as a diehard indiana jones fan, it's hard for me to accept the fourth as a part of the series. it's even harder for me to understand why spielberg would want to resurrect something so brilliant such as the original trilogy- and completely deface it with a new addition that hardly bears any resemblance to the old. on top of that, the action sequences were unrealistic or completely absurd (i'm trying to avoid spoilers, you'll recognize the scenes). one of the only aspects of the new that i appreciate is the old school slapstick sound effects during the fight scenes. these scenes were overplayed and fake; the old ones can be seen as this too, but they were not even believable. i felt as if i was in disneyworld watching the stunt show. the set design was dreadful, everything was "nice and clean" even in the jungle. the set design along with the dialogue, death sequences, and sidekicks are just some of the examples of an homage trying too hard. this new addition to the greatest trilogy of all time (besides OG star wars) is an enormous disappointment that i could vent upon for hours if you haven't already realized that. go see this movie if you want to see why remakes or extensions shouldn't occur.

So here's my take on the new 'Indy' film: I've read a lot of reviews on the new Indiana Jones movie. The first thing I heard was that the movie received thumbs up from critics. The only opinions of the movie that I've read on the internet have been pretty bad and I'm inclined to agree and put all their insights together into my opinion of the movie. First off, there are no spoilers here. Second, though it's going to be harsh, it may help you enjoy the movie more than I did since you'll go in expecting it not to be any good. This way, your hopes won't be as dashed as if you expected another epic 'Indiana Jones' thrill-ride/adventure. I feel that the new Indiana Jones is much like the new Star Wars. It has a great deal of flashy digital special effects that take away from the movie itself. One of the things I loved so much about the original Indiana Jones adventures was the gritty and raw time period in which he lived in. The effects were minimal because the sets brought his world to life. In all 3 of the original films there was an interesting beginning that had to do with an artifact separate from the rest of the movie's main plot. This particular one curiously lacked that introduction. The strange part is that for all the formulaic lines, humor and characters, they still didn't have the guts of a movie that made us want to watch it over and over again. It's as if they just wanted to toss together a film that would appeal to all ages without the clever wit and sense of creative adventure that typically lures an audience to an Indiana Jones film. The stunts were fun to watch, but even they fell short as at least in the original movies, they seemed somewhat believable (except of course for the raft going over the cliff in the beginning of Temple of Doom). Indy 4 has more than its fair share of unbelievable and at times downright dumb stunts that are more likely to make you scoff at their stupidity than drop your jaw in awe. If it took almost 20 years to make a movie, wouldn't you think they'd have put some time into the script? Wouldn't you expect a story that would intrigue you? The plot of this movie didn't seem to jive at all with the spirit of Indiana Jones. Lucas' influence is plain to see in the opening scenes with the digital additive(pod-race action + Jawa-like humor). Spielberg's sense of exciting directing seems to have waned with age. The writer of the script (his name isn't worth mentioning) destroyed the entire feel of the genre. Let's also point out that no one that I spoke with has ever told me that they were bored at any point during the original trilogy - I was yawning during some of the more lenghthy scenes of this new film and at times couldn't wait for the movie to end. The staggering failure of the new Star Wars to capture the essence of the old movies is carried over to Indiana 4. Poor story, poor acting (yes, even from Ford, LaBeof, Allen and Blanchet), and poor effects make for a very disappointing return for our hero who should have gone out with an exciting grace and humor befitting of one of the greatest action heros of our time. Yet another tidbit of criticism can be centered on the newly added references to TV's Young Indiana Jones Chronicles from the early 1990's. The series on TV was more of a history lesson than a true Indiana Jones movie experience, but that didn't take away from the skill with which it was put together. Critics and audiences alike took it for what it was-a background of our hero's experiences with a great deal of education and a touch of adventure. The original movies rarely referenced any part of the series and vice versa (granted the TV series didn't come out until after the movies). This one blends the two at inappropriate times. I honestly felt they should have left the series alone and made far less obvious connections between the two. It only cheapened the movie to link it to such an inferior medium. Why didn't they use Lawrence Kasdan?! I know he wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. His work has always been a recipe for success in Harrison's movies. Even the musical score seems to be missing at many times during the film. Was John Williams even around? The upshot is, though it's great to see Indiana Jones back on the big screen, it's incredibly obvious that the skill to create that perfect magical blend of a great cast, good acting, clever wit, well placed humor, a great story, and edge of your seat excitement has been lost. Perhaps like the Indy franchise, they belong in a museum.

This movie was so bad I can't even compare it to the other three Indy Movies. I've been waiting years for this movie to be completed and released, just to be highly dissapointed. It was filmed terribly, what's with the obvious movie set locations? I understand trying to make the movie kinda retro looking, but the originals filmed over 20 years ago looked more realistic than this tragedy. The dialogue was terrible, I think corny is entertaining, but this movie stepped over the line with it. Don't even get me started on the story line. What does aliens have to do with Indiana Jones?! And Shia LaBeouf swinging from trees like tarzan? I mean, seriously, at some point during filming Spielberg had to be like, wow this is horrible. If you really want to waste your money and feel dissapointed for 2 hours, then this movie is for you, but otherwise I highly recommend seeing something else.

Indiana Jones succeeded best when it had true emotional storytelling. "Raiders" is about personal ambition. "Crusade" was about personal responsibility. But "Crystal Skull" seems to be missing something.
"Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" starts off wonderfully in a Nevada warehouse which immediately evokes memories of the haunting final scene of "Raiders." Blanchett is great as a harsh KGB baddie and Ford is as he should be-- old. After all, it's 1957, nearly two decades since we last saw him in "Crusade." The fight/chase sequence is routine, but the action is relentless, ending with a rousing sequence with an A-bomb. It's all what's meant to be an equivalent of the opening in the idol's temple with the iconic rolling ball.
But after that, Indy doesn't really develop emotionally. And neither do Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, or the less-than-masculine Shia Lebouf. Even when Karen Allen makes a very welcome return as Marion, the much-desired moment where Indy and Marion have the "talk" about what happened to each other in the last twenty years feels rushed. The plot, involving ancient Mayans, space aliens, and the legendary city of El Dorado isn't much to write home about either. "Crystal Skull" is merely an assortment of stunt sequences that add up to an entertaining but relatively routine adventure pic.
One reason the earlier films were so great was because we loved young Harrison-- the tall, strong, handsome and intelligent hero-- who single-handedly takes on enemies against insurmountable odds. He wasn't Arnold or Rambo or John McClane who triumphed with weapons; most of the time, he used his fists. Girls wanted him, and guys wanted to be him.
Next, the computer effects do taint the action. The earlier films had an organic feeling to them. We knew that was a real guy hanging on to the grill of the truck, rolling around on top of the tank, or leaping into a pit of live snakes. Those were real tarantulas crawling on Alfred Molina and real cockroaches stuck in Capshaw's hair. But the Siafu ants are about par with the scarabs in Stephen Sommers' much less esteemed Mummy series. The monkeys and prairie dogs are cute, but they're cartoonish. And the chase through the thick jungle, an effects shot using two locations lain on top of one another, still looks like an effects shot. So does the wide angle view as the two jeeps are duking it out against the edge of a cliff. We know the 2nd unit cameraman isn't sitting on top of a helicopter. It's CGI. And it's not bad CGI at all... but the fact of the matter is, we just saw these amazing effects in recent, better, emotionally engaging films like "King Kong" and "Lord of the Rings."
Third, the villains in the earlier films actually made us feel like we were in real peril. When Mola Ram tore the heart out straight of the man on the metal rack, we gasped. When Toht held up the red hot fire poker to Marion's face saying "my dear Miss Ravenwood, let me tell you what I am used to dealing with..." we reeled back. The lighting in those films by Doug Slocombe evoked that noir of 1930s and 40s Bogart films, using heavy, ominous shadows. Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, on the other hand, is known for wash-outs, backlighting and smoke-- which worked wonders in "Munich" "A.I." and "Private Ryan" -- but miss their mark here. Cate Blanchett in full daylight is not scary to me. It just makes her look hot.
My friends accompanying also argued they preferred it when Indy was pursuing religious artifacts, tangible things we could root in history rather than myth. That's probably why the fountain of youth or Atlantis film treatments all got rejected. While the legends of conquistadors are interesting, most of it is rooted in an oral tradition. There's no Bible, Koran, or Veda texts from which we can draw it out from. There aren't paintings hanging in the Louvre that depict stories from Francisco de Orellana. And I think that's why it's not so incongruent to see space aliens derived from it at its somewhat comical conclusion.
But I don't think writers David Koepp, George Lucas and Jeff Nathanson are to be blamed, necessarily. All signs lead to Spielberg and Ford, whose tremendous careers in the 70s and 80s guarantee they can both retire tomorrow and expect to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They're making "Crystal Skull" as much for themselves as they are for their audiences. It's a reunion picture, not a true sequel. We're just supposed to enjoy seeing them together on screen, sort of like a viewing of "The Jetsons meet The Flintstones."
In short, don't judge "Crystal Skull" too harshly. Now in their 60s, Ford and Spielberg don't have anything more to prove. Yet Spielberg still has passion. He can make an anti-war statement by momentarily depicting a villain bigger than America and its ego ("War of the Worlds"). He can make the Holocaust into a riveting character study about power, business ethics, and true leadership ("Schindler's List"). But if American audiences don’t appreciate films like "Munich" or 'A.I." I understand if he'll churn out sub-par popcorn fodder just to capture the European and Japanese markets.
If you want a real Indiana Jones spectacle, "Crystal Skull" probably isn't it. Go rent "Raiders" again, or watch the superb "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" on DVD. But if you can appreciate the film as a celebration of Spielberg and Ford's historic, iconic collaboration during the 1980s, call your parents, bring your friends, buy some popcorn, and enjoy the ride.

I was apprehensive about this film at first. While I can say it does not overshadow Raider of the Lost Ark nor The Last Crusade, this movie was definitely worth the expense. The story had the same elements of the other three, but given that the legends were from a culture few have a lot of exposure to, the story may not have been that engaging. Nonetheless, the story provided a wonderful backdrop for the interactions of our beloved characters. There were few loose ends that were left unaddressed, as can happen with many sequels. While there were some parts that left a little to be desired, this was still an excellent movie. Compared to the others in the series, this is a difficult place to shine at all. Compared with the rest of Hollywood dreg that often floods our screens, this was amazing.

Even though the thought of crossing Indiana Jones with E.T. is a bizarre combination, it does match the time period the movie is set in. In 1957 there was speculation about extra-terrestrial life on earth. Aside from it, the movie brought back that classic style that only and Indiana film can deliver.

This newest Indy adventure is well worth the almost 20 year wait. Harrison Ford proved age doesn't matter; his performance brought back the tough, brilliant Indian Jones of my childhood. I was glad to see Karen Allen's character re-introduced, and the addition of Shia LaBeouf's Mutt added a new twist and dimension to the film. I especially appreciated the subtle references to the previous films. Overall I found the file enjoyable, suspenseful, and worthy of its name sake.

To be fair, I am a die hard Indy Fan, so I am both much more critical and much more forgiving. . This movie made me very sad as it had such potential. Unfortunately, there were decisions (made by Lucas I am sure) that spoiled good parts of the movie and took it in a direction far afield from what made Raiders and Last Crusade Great. Small things, like silly "Cutesy" CG, that was inappropriate (ala Star Wars Episode I, II, III) marred otherwise good sequences. Big things, like an overly convoluted storyline and a blurring of the traditional Indy Genre into something more akin to today's superhero / si-fi movies (again, with superfluous use of CG - Lucas cannot help himself). . That said, the first half of the movie (aside from the opening credits) was quite enjoyable for an Indy Fan like me, plenty of subtle nods and inside jokes. If you want to get any enjoyment out of the film you MUST watch Raiders and Last Crusade first. Some of the genre blurring is also forgivable if you consider that Indy is 18 years older than in Last Crusade, and in those 18 years the world around him has completely changed (WWII has come and gone, and the Nuclear Age has arisen). . For all the plot lines and promise that the movie opens up in the first half, do not expect a cohesive or satisfying end. The second half of the movie slips into a mediocre special effects ride that is exciting, to be sure, but somehow not truly Indy or all that fulfilling. . In the final analysis, if you were able to enjoy the Star Wars Prequels (perhaps by compartmentalizing them from the first 3 movies) or if you could stand Temple of Doom (this movie is MUCH more palatable than that) Then see the movie, and see it on the Big Screen. Just do not expect that it will live up to the mantle of Raiders or The Last Crusade, even though it attempts to capstone them.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I went to the midnight showing of the movie, and by the time it was over i wasnt sure if I was clapping because it was over, or because it was a good movie. It seemed like the longer the movie went on, the weirder it got - all coming to a head at the end. There just comes a point when too much is too much. When Indy's sidekick starts swinging through the trees tarzan style and has the monkeys attack the badguys, it just gets a little overboard. There are some good special effects, but again, they can be a little overbearing. And some of the stunts are more commonly seen in a loony toons cartoon than an indiana jones. This was better than the Temple of doom, but not nearly as good as the others, I think. All in all, its a good movie but I wouldnt go expecting anything epic or groundbreaking.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The build up of the movie was just like in the other IJ series, however, without spoiling, the ending is very disappointing and nothing like in the other series. It's very out there but what else can come from George Lucas. If you're a huge IJ fan, you will be upset with the movie, particularly the ending but if you're not a huge fan, you might enjoy it. All in all, I think the ending is too hard to allow myself to enjoy the full movie.

Wonderful to see the man in the hat again. To be taken to his world again is always like coming home. Ah, to hear the March in a theater.
Seeing Jones in his den dorking out about languages and maps and adventures was like old times. Seeing him get angry and sarcastic felt real.
Unfortunately, the action sequences seemed like live-action performances at Disneyland (and I love Disneyland). Indy was in no danger and the blue-screen felt omnipresent.
The story rambled along and everyone made the best of it. The reunion-show feel was awkward and even the reference to the Ark felt contrived. The cavernous warehouse didn't compare to the original - not big or grainy enough somehow.
It was a fair effort. Nothing to run out and buy the DVD over. Regardless, a thousand thank yous to Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford for giving it one last shot.

After 19 years. Indiana still had the action, adventure and those witty one liners. Excellent job off making it feel as if the last movie was only 2 years ago. Harrison did look older of course, but the plot and rest of the cast made up for that. All in all will proable go watch it again and makes me want to watch the 3 previous movies again also.

While many early critics gave mixed or even negative reviews, "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" delivered a fun, fast-paced, and enjoyable installment to the Indiana Jones series.
Spielberg and Lucas stick to the magic they originally created, following the formula of Indy racing to find a fabled or supernatural treasure before the evil Communist/Socialist Eastern European baddies reach it first and misuse its power, all the while trying to save his family and friends that get pulled into the mix as bait. They don't try to reinvent the wheel here, so if you're expecting some great departure from the originals you may be disappointed.
Harrison Ford leaves no doubt that he is just as brilliant as ever in the title role, even poking fun at the obvious difference in his age in the sequel. But he's hardly some tired looking geezer limping his way through the film- he comes off as fit and energetic as ever!
Karen Allen reprises her role as well and brings a level of comedy and warmth to the film, while Cate Blanchett's evil, over-the-top, dominitrix-esque Russian villain evokes that cheesy Indiana Jones baddie for which the franchise is known. Shia LeBouf gives a pretty decent performance as well, although his character was written as more of a plot catalyst in the film than a well-developed, stand-alone character.
The CGI was pretty believable, extraordinarily well done, rarely cheesy, and not overdone.
Overall, I'd say definitely go and see the movie in theaters if you're a fan of any of the previous films. Enjoy it for what it is: an action-packed, well-executed visual romp in another great Indiana Jones sequel!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Go into it looking for a fun movie, not some great masterpiece that some people have, for some reason, come to expect. The Indy films have never been masterpieces, but they've always been great fun and that's why they've got such a strong fan base.
You didn't go into the last ones looking for cinematic greatness, why start now? Just have fun!

KCS started off well, (Harrison Ford is still Indy, that's for sure), then couldn't decide how to bring all the characters together without being awkward and a little bit forced. There was still a fair degree of cleverness, just not as cogent a plot as we have been led to expect from Spielberg and Lucas. The monkey scene totally destroyed any suspension of disbelief that I had acquired. Still, there were some great moments, and some wonderful throwbacks to the original trilogy. The antagonist wasn't nearly maniacal enough in my opinion--the plot didn't really develop into an awesome climax like it could have. However, overall still a good time.

In the case of the Indiana Jones series, one must take the storylines of the respective films with a grain of salt. That being said, I found "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" to be even farther-fetched than any of Steven Speilberg's three previous installments. On numerous occassions, I found the plot to be quite laughable. While I realize that the shear disregard for realism is to be taken lightly, this element was achingly prevalent throughout the film. Nonetheless, the film proved to be immensely entertaining. George Lucas isn't about to be nominated for his screenplay, but he still knows how to enchant an audience, as well as pay respects to the Indy of the second millenium which most of us knew. Fans, both die-hard and casual, will notice references to the previous three movies throughout. Overall, while I wasn't surprised by the film's lack of realism, I was disappointed by it. However, if you can shut your brain off for two hours, this one is worth seeing.

To be fair I'm a fan. As I type, I'm facing a wall I've covered with photos of and articles on the movie. But as a fan, I'm am in the target demographic. This is a movie made for the people who loved the first three Indiana Jones movies. If you didn't, then don't see this movie unless you think Spielberg and Lucas deserve more money. If you did, you'll get great action, excitement and enough in jokes to let you know that you are a part of this fan culture.

Crystal skulls present an interesting dilemma for archaeologist....one which should warrant an interesting story. Somewhere along the line, however, Lucas and Spielberg learned to put an alien in a film for ratings. As per the earlier Indy films, they should've relied upon a use of myth and folklore specific to the region, the inhabitants, and the relevant time period to shape a more interesting story. Instead, the read tabloid journals at the Wal-Mart checkout.

The waterfall scenes were terrible and way too over the top unbelievable and were not needed to make this movie. The editor should of recognized this and did something else or requested different footage. I was also waiting for the Millennium Falcon to take off at the end. Other than that it was great!
