This movie is all about the eye candy if you are an adult. A lot of people are turned off by the cartoonish colors and action- don't be. The richness of the photography and compositing are amazing, and the action is as intense as the trailers promise. This is really a live action cartoon- and it should be enjoyed as such. If you really can't watch anime or cartoons aimed at an under 12 audience then do yourself a favor and stay away. The plot is better than that of the old Speed Racer cartoons, but that isn't saying much at all. The plot exposition is a little too clearly spelled out, and a bit slow. This is probably to help a younger audience "get" the film. The real reason to see this movie is the visuals. Its worth seeing in the theater. Some of the effects are old "2.5D" techniques which lots of VFX artists have used, but many of them are used in new and interesting ways. The Wachowski's are trying to expand the grammar of the film language- and they occasionally succeed. I know I'll be adding some of those tools to my film making arsenal. A lot of the photographic elements were shot with small apertures and a lot of light giving a deep depth of field, and then composited in layers. The net effect is that you have scenes with a tremendous amount of detail that seems to go on forever. This is a movie for your eyes, and if you accept it as such you will be happy.

I came into the movie with low expectations from all the negative reviews I had seen - but I was suprised that the movie did NOT suck as bad as everyone seemed to believe.
First - this is a kids movie. Simple as that. Easy to follow plot (for most), amazing colors and effects, a few jokes thrown in for good measure and a whole lot of speed. My 4-year-old sat transfixed to the screen for the entire time and did not take one potty break. (As compared to Horton Hears a Who in which I think we visited the bathroom 6 times.) My 8-year-old loved the action and racing as well.
As far as adults go - I am a pretty big fan of movies like this and even I found myself lost trying to fingure out what exactly was going on during the races. Things happened in such a warp-speed blur that there were times I just blinked and mayhem had run it's course. The story was not very original but seeing the grin on my kids faces was more then enough. Don't get me wrong - it was a decent movie - but I can't justify spending the money for just me to go. (Although I suppose if you use drugs the colors and flashes might do you well.)
I will note that Christina Ricci has amazing large eyes. Her character not withstanding they were nice to look at.
So, as far as I am concerned if you have kids who like racing, flashy lights, and a lot of action then you would do well to take them to see this movie. It was a wonderful time with my family. Conversely, if you are looking for a night out with someone special - try something else. You will be lost on this one because in-between kisses and flirting you will miss most of everything.

Took my 'tween to check out this flick. There was a lot of action going on in this movie that was sometimes difficult to follow. I'm a visual person, so the viid colors and the shifting of images on the screen was very cool most of the time. I didn't care too much for how the race cars were being represented on the track...it was sometimes too cartoonish.
Overall, my 'tween and I enjoyed this flick.

First off, Speed Racer is a fantastic movie. There were great performances all around. I was pleasantly surprised that the special fx don't look cartoonish at all. The Wachowshkis did the best job posssible at adapting this classic anime to the big screen.

We had the opportunityt to view this movie over the weekend with the kids and it was very nice. My only complaint was the occasional vulgar language but other than that the movie took me back to the cartoon . . . Go speed racer go!!

My family of 4 liked the movie - good race scenes, good plot line, great stylized cinematography - but I will caution movie goers with children under the age of 12 that the language was a bit more than we expected. Since it was rated PG, I was expecting a few "bad" words, but swearing was throughout, at least 7 or 8 times, and for the most part was unnecessary, or could have been toned down. Also, the young boy in the movie shoots a bird.

Very colorful and full of non stop racing excitement. I felt like I was in the car and part of the movie. All the stars blended well together and made it a most believable movie. I grew up with the original Speedracer cartoons, but this took it a step higher.

Great action movie with beautiful images. The critics must not be familiar with the cartoon to have given it such a poor review. My husband and I, who grew up with the cartoon, really enjoyed it. My kids were very interested in the story and had a great time. Definitely a must-see.

My family and I loved this movie. The beginning was a little slow and hard to follow for my boys (6 and 2), but once the main part of the story started they were completely engaged. I loved the visual aspect. The transitions from live action to computer generated animation were seemless. The speed was insane!

It's been a long time since we seen anything from the Brothers Wachowski and the waiting time was well worth it. This movie was colorful (VERY) full of action and a fun movie. Emile Hirsch I though did a great job acting and all in all this movie captured the spirit of the original cartoon.

My husband and I took our son to see Speed Racer on opening night this past Friday. We really didn't know what to expect as we remember the cartoon quite differently from our childhood. I thought it was a feel good movie and the family message was quite a surprise. I didn't like that there was some swearing in the movie - that's the last thing I need my 5 yr old son repeating but all in all it was action packed, vivid, and exciting! We really felt like we were in a virtual game with some of the races!! Good thing we don't get motion sickness. Nice job to the producers.

I took my son and three of his friends. All boys ages 8 to 10 years. The following shares my son's take on the movie. They all thought it was action packed and totally extreme. "The best movie of our lives". As a parent I thought that the visuals were wonderful. Though the one scene where one of the characters was getting beaten made one of the boys uncomfortable w the violence and blood. I had to take him out for a short time until the racing scenes started again. Also, I felt the use of bad language was not necessary. I spoke to the boys and told that we don't approve of speaking that way. The movie kept their full attention. My son wants to see the movie again and take another friend. The reviewers got it wrong. Speed Racer is a great fun summer movie.

This movie is a cornucopia of colors, sights, and sounds. For everything that was wrong with the last two Matrix movies, the Wachowski brothers managed to do everything right with this one. They not only captured the essence of the American “Speed Racer” but they also were able to tap into the Japanese original “Mach Go Go Go” for further inspiration.
The movie starts with Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) driving like a demon on wheels at Thunderhead race track. He’s not only trying to win the race but he’s also trying to chase after his dream of being like his older brother, Rex Racer (Scott Porter).
Pops (John Goodman) is the matriarch of the family and the designer of the famous Mach 5. He is supported by his loving wife Mom Racer (Susan Sarandon). Also with the family is younger son Spritle (Paulie Litt) and his pet Chim-Chim the monkey. Pops can’t do everything alone so he has long time family friend Sparky (Kick Gurry) as the mechanic of the group but also Speed’s race day spotter. Rounding out the family is Speed’s girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci) who has been there for speed since grade school.
There is more to this movie then the racing. There is a story of big business corruption and how it is taking over the World Racing League by fixing races. One such business is Royalton Industries headed by A.Royalton (Roger Allam). He’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants and if that means paying off drivers to stop Speed from winning then that’s what he’ll do.
Trying to stop him is the CIB, an international law organization that has a few tricks of their own. The lead investigator, Inspector Detector (Benno Fürmann), has a driver that will stop the corruption of the WRL by brining justices back…Racer X (Matthew Fox) is that driver. But he can’t do it alone so he enlists the aid of Speed Racer to help crack the case and bring Royalton’s company down.
The Wachowskis were able to do something new and fresh with the races and make the cars seem alive. Each race left you breathless and waiting for more as you watched the stunning driving of Speed Racer and the other drivers. From the beginning race at Thunderhead to the final Grand Prix you will be amazed at the acrobatic movements of the automobiles.
The casting was perfect. Each actor selected was able to channel their animated counterpart. This movie has plenty of action, adventure, and humor for all to enjoy

This movie was all in all, very faithful to the original animated series. The visuals are so amazingly eye popping, it's like watching a 3-D flick. We saw it at an Imax theater, so it was extra awesome and both the kids (11 year old girl & 9 year old boy) LOVED it. Would have liked to see more crashes, but what they showed were great. It's a non stop roller coaster ride and even though the plot isnt terribly involved, it works well to forward the movie along. Yep. Go see it.

I took my son (6yo) and he couldn't sit still, the plot was confusing and it did nothing but give me a headache. The flash forward, flash back, and the actual story just got confusing for my son, we actually left an hour into it.

Speed Racer, what can I say, it was family time afterschool. But, let's face it, this time was really thirty minutes of peace and quiet! During which my boys sat transfixed by Speed Racer's exploits. Having seen it on the Big Screen brought back all these great memories. Things to be aware of: the villian is slimy, his performance was lackluster often dragging the movie's momentum down. I recommend that children under six years of age not see this without adult supervision, due to mature words and gestures. Of the movie in general it was a nostalgic thrill ride; a vivid action packed chase from start to finish (pun intended).

For me this movie was a flashback to the days when I would rush home and turn on the TV and watch the original Speed Racer cartoon. The race scenes and the Mach 5 were true to their origin. The movie was pretty exciting, but there were certainly parts that were inappropriate for "little eyes and ears," but this is to be expected with a PG rating. Overall not as good as expected, but still worth seeing once.

Great Action - Kids will love it though some will have trouble sitting for the entire 2 hours and some odd minutes. For adults....not the greatest...but that's not why I went to see it anyway. My daughter (9) was thrilled!!

We went to see this with our twin girls (10)and our son (12) and all three of them loved the movie. It had lots of action and the racing scenes were exciting enough to make me hit the imaginary brake pedal several times. I liked the character and story development but it seemed a bit rushed at times. Still, not having watched the cartoon overly much as a kid, I got the jist of the setup and was able to follow the movie well. My husband loved Speed Racer as a kid and enjoyed the cars and racing scenes in this movie. As in the cartoon, Spridle and ChimChim were excellent comic relief. If you are looking for a movie the whole family will love, this is probably the one.

After seeing poor reviews, I was hesitant to take the children. I decided to go see it anyway. All in all, the movie is good. It probably is 15 - 30 minutes too long for kids but other than that, no complaints.

A complete eye candy movie and you'd expect the dialogue to fall way short, while it was campy at times, it fit in to the movie as a whole. There was a good balance between the action packed races and the thin story about doing what's right fit in between those spaces. I was pleasantly surprised.

Considering all the horrible reviews on this movie...I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. I don't know what the critics were expecting....after all...the movie is based on a 40 year old CARTOON! The race secquences were fantastic...and the graphics are enough to make you go into cardiac arrest! Spritle and Chim-Chim absolutely stole the show though. Histerical!! The only complaint I have is that it was about 15 minutes too long. Especially for a kids movie.
