Avatar is to 3D as Star Wars was to Visual Effects

Avatar contains a good story and, although its been told time and again over the years, Cameron tells it well. In my viewings people cried and laughed at most of the right places. People were talking about it on the way out of the theater a good sign.
The real impact of this film though is its use of 3D. It isn't the first, certainly not the most in your face. It does blend 3D with traditional cinematographic sensibilities very well to deliver a film you really can fall into and become a part of.
I miss my time on Pandora. I hope the now inevitable sequel makes me feel the same way.
I also look forward to seeing a host of other film experiences treated this way, so I can get lost in other worlds too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie expects YOU to think

This is a story to end superhero myth.
There is some flashy action and pretty pictures, yes there is a mystery and some interesting characters. They aren't the point. As an action flick its 3.5 stars.
The film is really an exploration of the minds and motivations of "real" superheroes. Who are these people, and do you want them out there protecting you? It asks about right and wrong, and does so on an epic scale.
If those things do matter to you then the film is 4.5 stars.
The one thing that upset me is the extensive use of period music. Period music (80's pop) inspired the original story, and it has a place in this film- I just think it is overused, and that it will age the film prematurely. I'd like to see it rescored.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Delicious Eye Candy

This movie is all about the eye candy if you are an adult. A lot of people are turned off by the cartoonish colors and action- don't be. The richness of the photography and compositing are amazing, and the action is as intense as the trailers promise.
This is really a live action cartoon- and it should be enjoyed as such. If you really can't watch anime or cartoons aimed at an under 12 audience then do yourself a favor and stay away.
The plot is better than that of the old Speed Racer cartoons, but that isn't saying much at all. The plot exposition is a little too clearly spelled out, and a bit slow. This is probably to help a younger audience "get" the film.
The real reason to see this movie is the visuals. Its worth seeing in the theater. Some of the effects are old "2.5D" techniques which lots of VFX artists have used, but many of them are used in new and interesting ways. The Wachowski's are trying to expand the grammar of the film language- and they occasionally succeed. I know I'll be adding some of those tools to my film making arsenal.
A lot of the photographic elements were shot with small apertures and a lot of light giving a deep depth of field, and then composited in layers. The net effect is that you have scenes with a tremendous amount of detail that seems to go on forever.
This is a movie for your eyes, and if you accept it as such you will be happy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
