The Dark Knight proves that comic book franchises can be beautiful artwork. Although Christian Bale's performance may not be award-worthy, it is still brings a balance of "badass-ness" and emotional turmoil to the movie in a non-cliche manner. Besides, Heath Ledger's absolutely stunning performance will surely earn an Oscar nomination (if not a win). The Joker will send chills down your spine days after seeing the film. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine & Morgan Freeman make brilliant contributions to the film, outweighing the less-than stellar performance by Maggie Gyllenhall & the poorly formed "Two-Face" played by Aaron Eckhart.
Gotham has never looked better. Definitely worth seeing today!

Although I jumped out of my seat and screemed a few times, I also found myself to be quite bored during the blow up and car chase scenes! The buildings were awesome, and the best Joker ever! But batman was typical- nothing special. Other times things were quite predictable. Seemed as if they combined two movies in one which added to the boredom. I'll see it again, but at home. Also, it was difficult to hear the voices due to special effects. 1/2 the time couldn't hear what the dialog was!

This is one of the best movies i have ever seen.
If not the best. I've seen it three times already and it never gets old. I've seen Jack play the role and it is no comparison to Heath. I'm not suprised he lost sleep over his role because it was amazing. If the Joker was acted badly I think the whole movie would be bad. 10 stars for me. Hats off to Heathcliff Andrew Ledger. :)

“Oscar” seems to be the buzz word for the late Heath Ledger’s Joker. It’s not hype. It is without a doubt one of the most magnificent pieces of work that has been seen in years. Most actors can only hope to have one role that defines their career. In 28 short years, Ledger will be remembered for two. In 2005, Ledger gained monumental fame with Brokeback Mountain co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal. Even if you haven’t seen the film, you know about it.
Ironically in “Dark Knight,” Ledger tormented Jake’s sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, as Bruce Wayne’s love interest, Rachal Dawes.
One critic said the performance was reminiscent of Jack Nicholson, but not as the Joker. One flew over the cuckoo’s nest was mentioned. It was closer to the deranged Nicholson in “The Shining.”
Nicholson’s Joker was a more controlled character that had a sick sense of humor. There was nothing funny about Ledger’s performance. As a more manic, chaotic character, you never knew what he was going to do next. There was no predicting in this film.
Without Ledger’s performance, it still would have been a good movie about equal to Batman Begins, but it was the Joker that took it over the top. You couldn’t wait for him to be back on the screen.
No one can foresee the Academy Awards, but if he doesn’t win an Oscar, he will at least be nominated.
I suspect there will be at least one other nomination in the offing for Knight. It would probably be a safe bet in Vegas to pick The Dark Knight to win the Oscar for make-up, and not just for the Joker’s visual presence.
Go see it for yourself. If your worried about a sell out on tickets, buy it on the web before you go. It only costs $1 more. Try a matinée, they’re not only cheaper, but less crowded.

I am reviewing this movie as someone who is not a big fan of the comic movie genre and who has only seen half of the previous Batman movies. I went because a friend wanted to go and because I enjoyed some of Heath Ledger's earlier movies and wanted to see his performance.
The movie is very dark, somewhat depressing and violent with a lot of guns and fist-fighting. I would not take children under 12; there were some in the theatre who started crying. It does not have a typical happy-ending resolution (apparently leaving things open for more movies to come).
The special effects and cinematography are completely mind-blowing, though I found the style a little irritating. I got vertigo from a few of the camera angles that panned rapidly and sharply. Some of the scenes were so dark it was hard to tell exactly what was happening, and they used a very rapid-fire editing style (especially in the fight scenes, which were numerous) that resulted in basically just quick flashes of action that you couldn't see long enough to really tell who was punching who. This may have been intentional on the director's part to heighten the anxiety (or to minimize the violence by blurring it by).
The movie was long but went by really fast because it is just so jam-packed with action and suspense. In fact, we thought maybe a little too much action and we were wishing for a quieter scene so we could take a break from the high-anxiety. There is a LOT going on with several sub-plots and trying to keep up with who the good guys are and who the bad guys are requires concentration. Go to the restroom before the show - you don't want to miss anything. The other batman movies (that I've seen) felt more stylized like a comic book... this one feels horrifyingly real-life and some of the themes and situations are disturbing and will make you think.
Regarding the acting, Christian Bale did fine but I didn't think he had much real acting to do... most of the time he is wearing the Batman suit and it could be anyone under there. I didn't know Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine were in it before I went, so that was a nice treat though Freeman doesn't a have large role. They both gave respectable performances. Oldman and Eckhart were excellent as well. I didn't care for Maggie Gyllenhaal as the love-interest Rachel. She seemed much younger and less sophisticated than the two men who both supposedly wanted her (Batman and the D.A. played by Eckhart) and I didn't feel any chemistry between her and Batman. That said, Heath Ledger was just superb. He stole the movie in my opinion and it is worth seeing just for his performance alone. I found his Joker both terrifying and fascinating at the same time and he is by far the most interesting character even though he is hard to watch at times; I was horrified but couldn't look away because I wanted to see what he was going to do next. Heath probably will probably an Oscar as Michael Caine predicted - it's well-deserved and I'm sad that we won't see him in any more movies. Some people were laughing at a few of his Joker scenes. Although I may have smiled once or twice he was just too tortured and insane to be amusing to me.
I'm glad I saw it but I'm not sure I would buy it because it's not the kind of movie I could watch over and over. I would probably watch it again if it came on cable just to see Heath's performance again.

Wow.. that was just amazing.. I LOVED the length.. if you have a problem with how long it is.. you just don't like movies for real.. you are the kind of person that want a quick high and not an amazing experience. This movie.. was that amazing experience I so seldom experience. It was eons better than the first one. Highly suggest. Do not sit in the front row at the movies if you are afraid of scary movies or are jumpy.

Too much pure evil to enjoy completely...although this was a thoroughly well crafted movie, I could not recommend it do to the extreme violence & overall tone of the film.
Let me be fair. This is a good movie with a good story & credible/complex characters which will have you thinking & talking about it long after you see it. It should be rated 'R' & marketed towards a different target audience (not children & teens).

This was a fantastic cinematic achievement, both for the acting and the action. The fight scenes were not filmed in the best way, however. I never could tell what was going on when a fight broke out, which is my only reason for not giving it a 5. I also think it should've received an R rating for it's adult themes and violence. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was downright CREEPY and AMAZING. Go see this film.

The message of this movie appears to be that we are victims of random terror. Terrorists have no rational motives beyond being beaten by their parents. The only way to fight such terrorists is with extra-legal means. Those who have fought terror with terror are rejected by the rest of us wimps. Bin Laden is the Jester. Dick Cheney is Batman.
These are disturbing messages for those of us who value our individual liberty more than a little temporary safety. Martin Luther was beaten savagely by his father yet did not become a terrorist. He used reason and language to bring down the power of the Roman Catholic Church. He was not a murderer.
Terrorists often have reasons for their actions, although civilized people can’t condone them. When we allow our protectors to adopt these methods, we have two forces to fear, not just one.
Finally, I got tired of watching things blow up after about two hours of the movie. The special effects were impressive, but a great movie ought to have more than special effects.

I liked this movie a lot. It is gritty and dark, and so much less silly and campy than the Keaton and Clooney versions of Batman. Everyone keeps talking about Heath Ledger, who was amazing, but I have to plug Christian Bale, too, who is just amazing as a serious Dark Knight. Some people don't like this dark, serious Batman, but I infinitely prefer it, just as I prefer the more serious and dark Daniel Craig as Bond. I want to see this one again already. Oh, and Chicago makes a great Gotham, but I am a bit biased, since they filmed all around where I live.

I don't have much to say other than the movie was awesome. It was by far the BEST Batman and as another review stated, no disrespect to Jack Nicholson but Heath Ledger claimed that character and made it his own. It is so very sad that he is not here to enjoy the accolades. May he rest in peace. If you have not seen The Dark Knight, you are truly missing out.

I liked the movie a lot but its not as good as I expected. I've been a big time Batman fan for 18 years and think that this directors series is the best of all of the movies but I think I like the last movie better. Heath Ledger was outstanding as the Joker but Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne was just kind of there. The chase scene in the tunnel was one of the best scenes I've seen in any movie in a long time. Overall I think the movie was good but not awesome. Maybe I'm just being too picky.

Great movie not as good as the hype but good. Really good sfx, acting and pretty good story. I thought the story was a little long winded in some parts but, the action was great if a little hard to follow at times. Heath Ledger's Joker was definitly great. He was sick and twisted truely a mental case like The Joker should be. Christian Bale as Batman was good I just got sick of the voice he used as Batman it came off very forced. Overall though the movie gets 4.5 out of 5 stars from me. I just wanna know one thing Batman... Why So Serious??...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

The Nolan boys managed to fix all the problems (blurry fight sequences, implausible villains) presented in Batman Begins. While the first is an enjoyable film with nice touches perhaps gleaned from Frank Miller's "Batman Year One" The Dark Knight more than tops it. The cinematography alone has upped the ante with dizzying vertical shots and visceral action sequences. The flow of action keeps a gripping pace throughout the 2 & 1/2 hrs. The plot is intricately written the seeds of later events are deftly woven into earlier scenes, and the Commissioner Gordon role is done a service this time. The acting level is beyond previous Batman film incarnations, perhaps even Tim Burton's '89 version, as is the sense of realism.
Heath Ledger steals the show. I hadn't followed the late actor's career before this, but the erratic menace he brought to this role lives up to the challenge of such an iconic villain. Without being maudlin I can honestly say I feel deprived of other great roles he would have brought to the screen. Go see it. Twice if you can.

I am definitely jumping on the bandwagon and saying this is the best movie of the summer, if not the year. Oscar performances? Too many to count, but most definitely Ledger's.
