If Iron Man's a success (and I think it will be), movie execs will no longer have any excuse for making bad "comic book" films.
There IS a "formula" (and don't studio execs love that word?) that works: stop relying on explosions and meaningless fight scenes and make the man behind the mask far more interesting than the costume!
Like Spiderman and Dark Knight before it, Iron Man spends alot of time defining who Tony Stark is and what he stands for. And does it in a fun, cpmpulsively watchable way. The writers also made sure that they don't gloss over exactly HOW he manages to do what he does. Being able to fly is a big deal, and when a character figures out how to do it - the audience needs to vicariously experience that thrill.
Writers and filmmakers developing superheroe films should never take the characters powers for granted. I can picture the stereotypical studio exec being worried that too much time was spent on Stark becoming Iron Man, but that's the most fascinating part. Because when he finally does put the costume on - you CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO HIM.! He's not just a CGI stand-in. We know the man behind the CGI. And, this is key, the man is very different from Peter Parker and Bruce Wayne, not the usual carbon copy we see in most action movies.
I wouldn't say the film is flawless given that one character's story arc was a bit too predictable for my tastes, but I think this was a result of its faithfulness to the comic book. This is a small quibble though.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Great acting, fantastic action, rockin soundtrack and iron man just looks cool! Downey, Bridges and Paltrow are the backbone of the movie. Look for a guest appearance by a Rage Against the Machine member!

This movie was great! Robert Downey Jr. was perfect for the role. I don't think anyone else could have done it better. The special effects as well as the cinematography were great not to mention the all star cast. If you're into super hero movies, this is a must see. What can I say that hasn't been said by critics across the nation? This is a blockbuster and brings director Jon Favreau into the big leagues. It's the first movie completely produced by Marvel Studios and it's the first comic book movie that appeals equally to general audiences while totally pleasing die hard comic book geeks at the same time. Be sure to stay until after the credits roll for a special guest star with a hint of the great things to come from Marvel Studios. This brief sequence had the audience I was with experience a communial geekgasm complete with cheers and high-fives, Did I mention that Robert Downey is the best ever match of actor to their source material? This movie MUST BE SEEN on the big screen and has totally raised the bar for the summer movies to come. GREAT WORK TO ALL INVOLVED! THANKS FOR FINALLY GETTING A COMIC BOOK COMPLETELY RIGHT! 5 STARS!!

Although it never quite hit the emotional heights of the very best of the super hero movies (Spidey 1+2, Superman 1+2, X-men 1+2), Iron Man is a truly enjoyable comic book adaptation. The cast is top notch. Robert Downey is flat out fantastic as the lead, Tony Stark, and the script is smart enough to recognize that great superhero movies feature heroes who are more interesting out of their costumes than in them. If you are a fan of Marvel comics in general, stay for the credits. There's a brief scene at the very end that you won't want to miss.

WOW! A truly worthy addition to the Marvel movie pantheon, "Iron Man" delivers everything you'd want in a Summer superhero film: humor, action, engaging characters, action, superb effects, and just an overall entertaining thrill ride. Oh, and did I mention action? Superb casting of Robert Downey, Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man. He brought Tony's character to life is such a viable way...portraying him as the flawed person he is in the comics, yet making you believe "This guy could really be a hero". Additionally, the supporting cast of characters added to the fun with, again, great casting of Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, and Gwyneth Paltrow. And make sure to STAY through the end credits....if you haven't already had it spoiled online or by fellow moviegoers. Worth seeing and great way to kick off thr Summer movie season!

Well I went because my kids wanted to see it,and figured it would just be another dumb kids movie...But I was pleasantly surprised! I have been a fan of Iron Man since I was a kid and I have to say that it was without a doubt the best comic to movie translation in history. Spiderman was great, but not totally accurate, whereas Iron Man was very much true to the character, with the exception of Jarvis being a computer. Robert Downey Jr. was a perfect choice to play Tony Stark because both Downey Jr. and Stark share similar life experiences and that added ten-fold to the value of this film.

The special effects are top notch and not over the top for the sake of being so. Iron Man hit the big screen yesterday and officially opened the summer blockbuster season with a bang. One of the rare instances when a comic book superhero story translates successfully into a live action movie. This movie was cast extremely well and the story was fun and exciting. The biggest challenge that most superhero movies face in their initial offering is that they must go through the traditional "origins" story. It is always fun to watch film makers reinterpret this story, which most of us "kids" that grew up on comic books or Saturday morning cartoons know so well already. However, they usually limit the story and do not offer an extremely sophisticated plot or character development. However, Iron Man seems to overcome that challenge well to provide an entertaining experience for movie goers in a 2 hour package and leaves the audience ready for more. I hope we will see an Iron Man 2 or Avengers movie in the future. However, this will only work if Robert Downey Jr. reprises the role. He is Iron Man.

I am a big fan of comic books, and was always a Marvel kid growing up. Iron Man was never my favorite or most dear of their heroes, but I always loved the concept of shell-head and Tony Stark. To this day, I am a big fan of comic book movies, including super hero movies.
All that said, I think this may be the best super hero movie yet. Better than Spider Man, better than the X-Men, better than Batman Begins. They just hit every single mark perfectly.
They got Iron Man's power, the basics of his origin, the technological advancements, the idea of villains who steal the Iron Man technology, and so many other things perfectly. Most importantly, though, Downey also nailed the role of "Tony Stark, Billionaire Douchebag" better than I could have possibly imagined.
Including Shield agents, and the surprise after the credits, pushed this movie from amazing to awe-inspiring to me. Completely perfect, I can't wait to see it again.

Ironman was by far the best Marvel or superhero movie to date by far. The special effects were flawless and there was not a single scene that did not look absolutely real. The storyline progressed well and had all the elements of a great hero movie...comedy, action, romance and suspense. A definite must see. Stay tuned after the credit for the special Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D teaser.

In the line of Marvel hero films, Iron Man is a bright star. The movie opens strong and maintains the viewer’s interest for its entirety. The cast is strong with the weakest link being Rhodes (Terrence Howard). The rest of the cast is stellar. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper Potts to a tee. Before the movie was released, I had my doubts about Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark. He fills the role surprisingly well. Jeff Bridges executes the role of the self serving Obadiah Stone with relish.
One of the movie's highlights is the Iron Man suit itself. It is marvelous. Watching Tony Stark get suited up in his garage is worth the price of admission.
For Silver Age Marvel fans, the origin storyline stays true with Vietnam being replaced with Afghanistan. Kudos to the writers for this. Stan Lee makes his usual cameo appearance, this time playing a Hugh Hefner type aging playboy.
Bottom line, the movie is definitely worth seeing.

On a scale of 1-10 I would give this movie an 11! Great story line, actors and special effects. The audience applauded the special effects, laughed out loud at the jokes and jumped at the suspense scenes.

Excellent performance by Tony's cave mate as well.
Gratuitous skin and intercourse in the opening dulled my appreciation for the movie (considerably.)

FanTASTIC movie. I generally try to go into movies with low expectations and be easially pleased to avoid disappointments, but after seeing that first trailer I was hooked. I went into the theater expecting the best, and I was not let down. Everyone plays their parts to perfection, even the small bits, the movie is BEAUTIFUL yet not over done in the CGI it all meshes together seamlessly for the most part. Everyone I went with agreed, best movie we'd been to in a LONG time.

Great movie from start to finish (queue B.S. playing "Iron Man"!!). Brought my 14 yr old stepson who's the nations toughest movie critic. From him, "It was good" is about as good as it gets!
I'm willing to go a step farther and say that this one ranks in the top 5 of all comic book character-based movies...all time! This is due primarily to the characters themselves. Robert Downey Jr. plays the part well. I remember Iron Man from reading the original comic books (I was seven when he was launched) and those of us that old remember when reading comics was one of the few indoor distractions you could find!! Iron Man was always a smart alec but he was also funny in a way. He would crack jokes like Spidey but less campy than the webslinger. Bottom line: Great job by RDJ!!
Casting in general was excellent with some great mini-performances by bit players.
I've got to admit though that the product placement stuff is getting a little out of hand. Audi, Burger King, etc. etc. When will that ever end? Kind of tiresome but a staple of big budget action movies these days..

Finally a comic book hero that most people can relate to.Iron Man has a great plot,the actors on this movie are not the normal High profile actors that we see in the movies these days. It was nice to see actors that have been around for a while and have made so many movies,it's truly an event to see the roles come to life with their skills. Robert Downey Jr. really brings the charactor of Tony Starks to life,he delivers a powerful performance a must see from Downey! I have not seen Jeff Bridges in a role like this before but he was an excellent addition to the cast.Gwyneth Paltrow as usuall adds her girl next door charm to the role as Pepper Potts,even after being away from acting for the last few years she definitaly still has the charm and desirable looks,and charisma going for her that made her the great actress she is. Jon Favreau has assembled his acquired skills as a director/actor to really put together a great summer movie, I really appreciate that I was able to have my nephews and neices there and not feel uncomfortable with any of the scenes. All in all this was a great movie can't wait for the Blue ray to come out!
