Stand-out performances by Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies - as well as the entire supporting cast - make City Island a must-see. A fascinating, twisting "pretzel of a story-line" holds our long-term interest while great dialogue and crisp editing keep us entranced in each "here and now" moment. I cannot think of anything negative in this movie to quibble over. There is more than enough humor, melodrama, suspense and intrigue to keep every adult movie watcher fully entertained for 100 minutes. A golden nugget of a movie that is a surprise treat in a "sea of mediocre films of this genre". Escape to City Island at your nearest theater ASAP!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Favreau Hammers Out Another Huge Hit with IronMan2
Tony Stark and IronMan evolve and expand their universe in IronMan2. Favreau stays true to the Marvel comics metal-clad warrior in this worthy sequel. Action, humor, melodrama, special effects, multi-dimensional villains, imperfect heroes, interesting story-line, snappy dialogue, expansion of the Marvel comics universe and mythology .... all come together in fine form in this fast moving superhero flick. In addition we are teased regarding future movies by the likes of The Black Widow, Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer and an expanded look at Nick Fury and SHIELD. These tidbits bring out the "geek" in any of us old comic book aficionados. Kudos to the entire film-making team on IronMan2! See it in IMAX!
I'm not sure what "possesses" one to think that Nightmare on Elm Street needs to be re-made....but, that said, this new take on the "dream slasher" does offer some new angles and the cinematography and effects are actually a step up from the original. Haley does a good job as Freddie with what he is given. This Freddie is different from the previous one as the back-story is detailed out more and he is "less nebulous". We know more about him before he becomes a dream stalker. Gone is most of the "dark humor" and this is replaced by omnipresent tension and fear. I was surprised by how much I liked this new version of Freddie Kruger. Give this one a viewing - right before you go home to sleep and, perchance, dream. Good luck!
Amazing cinematography! The visuals alone are reason enough to see this great ocean documentary. This is good because the narrative is weak and devoid of factual information that could have been (and should have been) included. Pierce Brosnan is okay as the narrator but he is hindered by the actual narrative script. That said I think the film narration would have been better served by an "unknown" with a deeper, richer tonal quality. In the end the film is an amazing visual journey to "another world". Unlike Avatar there is no need for special effects, make-up and CGI as God and nature have provided the greatest visual effects imaginable. Kudos to the cameramen.
Death at a Funeral kept me chuckling throughout with a few "guffaws" thrown in occasionally. I thought that James Marsden & Peter Dinklage stole most of the best laughs in the movie .... which is hard to believe with the likes of Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence occupying the same film. The weakest character had to be Luke Wilson. Why was he even in the movie? Not sure that the film is worthy of putting out first run movie theater ticket money but it is worth a viewing - maybe as a rental or at the dollar theater in a few weeks.
The Losers provides exactly what one should expect from this genre of film - action, campy dialogue, humor, a great villain, a good-guy team of imperfect heroes that play off each other in interesting ways, some twists & turns along the way, a crazy "destroy the world plot" and, of course, a femme fatale in leather shooting a missile launcher. Gosh - what more could you ask for? If you are looking for something cerebral, complex & realistic - with Elizabethan dialogue .... please don't go see The Losers .... but if you want a shoot 'em up, action, comic book team adrenalin rush this flick should "do the trick".
Poor old JLo. She cannot find anyone to impregnate her. She cannot find a man who will love her. Certainly realistic and understandable....NOT! From this basic premise the movie slides downhill gathering "unfunny" speed as it weaves in and out of: is she pregnant/is she not, will they be a couple/or will they not, will she overcome her fear of long-term relationships/or will she not ...yikes! Yes - there are "splashes" of humor sprinkled throughout the flick - sparsely nestled in between huge leaps of logic, credulity and oceans of mediocre dialogue and interplay between the main characters. Instead of seeing this movie better to go to your back-up plan first.
A well acted character study that has several funny scenes and a few contemplative scenes but is just not worthy of a 107 minute movie-watching investment. All told the worthwhile parts of humor and pathos make up about 20 minutes of the film. It also grinds you down a bit as we are forced to focus on the narcissistic, selfish, self-destructive, neurotic behaviors of the title character. In the end there is not enough "there....there". I wanted to have more fun watching this movie and I wanted to see an outcome that was more defined. Perhaps the writer-director got lost in his own hubris and could not find a way out of the depressing place he allows Greenberg to inhabit. Skip this one. Invest time making your own life more positive & productive. No need to wallow in Greenberg's life .... along with him.
Original, controversial, violent, darkly funny, action-packed movie based on the John Romita Jr. comic book that is as much a tale of modern societal moral "drift" as it is a "superhero" tale of good vs. evil. The movie is so well done that while we cringe at an 11 year old slicing & dicing bad guys like a pre-teen "Uma Thurman from Kill Bill" we find ourselves cheering her on as the ultimate vigilante carving her way towards eradicating the vile "human cockroach" responsible for her mother's demise. This is a near-great movie and an A+ comic book adaption that most adults will enjoy in all of its dimensions. This is not a movie for the kids.
Terribly Happy - not sure I yet get the title for this little film noir-ish about a mysterious little town, its odd inhabitants, secrets that are not so secret and the lawman from the "big city" that is sent there to recuperate from some personal trauma in a place "where nothing ever happens". I was not sure about this film right up until the end. The last 5 minutes was a pay-off that made the movie for me. A tale with twists & turns that will keep you thinking (& guessing) right up until the karmic ending. Not perfect, a little slow at times but just enough quirky characters, just enough plot twists & surprises and just enough good acting - so that by the end you should be somewhat - if not terribly - happy.
