Proof that sometimes the very best things come in small packages. The story, setting and characters grab hold of you immediately. "Goldilocks" pacing - not too slow and not too fast - it is just right. An original vampire movie that does not try to "out-vampire" other movies in this genre with hyper-violence, gratuitous makeup and special effects. Instead we get a story of two outcasts - one as innocent as a fresh blanket of fallen snow and the other, while much mystery remains, is driven by the "need to feed" on the...well - you know that part of the story. The universe allows them to find one another and together they form a union that most would envy if only the macabre elements could be carved away.
The movie Australia seems like it should have it all....and it almost does. This is a rousing tale of historical importance told through the lives of an adventurous couple well-played by Jackman and Kidman. They are surrounded by interesting supporting characters - both of good and bad moral fiber. The use of a young aboriginal boy as a central figure and poetic narrator is masterfully done. This epic movie falls short in the following ways: It is too two dimensional, it is too long and it is too hard to hear much of the heavy Aussie accented conversations at times. Worth seeing but better viewed with slightly lower expectations than perhaps we had. A Koala-ty flick overall - just a kangaroo hop from greatness.
Danny Boyle does it again. The man makes the most original and interesting movies. Slumdog Millionaire keeps his string of successes alive. A total pleasure. One of the most perfect and complete movies of the year! My only complaint - it ended too soon. Would have enjoyed watching the story enfold longer into the lives of our two young protagonists. The movie audience we communed with was enthralled and erupted in applause at the end. The ovation was as much for the quality storytelling of this movie as it was for the joy in watching two people find their way back to their most cherished possessions - each other.
We had low expectation for Bolt and this may be coloring our appreciation a bit. Having said that we give it a high recommendation. We did not see it in 3-D and enjoyed it enough that we volunteered to each other that we would not mind it seeing again - next time in 3-D. We see a lot of movies and almost never want to see them twice. How can you not love all of the characters in this movie....especially "Rhino" the hamster?! Kids, teens & big kids will enjoy Bolt!
I have reached my saturation point for giggling teenage girls with this movie. If you are a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 (maybe a bit older in some cases...) then you will likely enjoy this flick. A poor man's Romeo and Juliet draped in gothic dim light populated by pasty-skinned (albeit handsome) teens. For the rest of us we will endure. For most males and the vast majority of the cine-going populace we would prefer the 15 minute condensed version...if they ever make one. Better to skip Twilight and snuggle up at home with a "Twilight Zone" TV show anthology - any year. This movie had zero tension....but it did make some of us wonder why anyone would enjoy kissing someone with ice-cold, clammy, dead lips? Sexy - huh?
If you like a move that forces you to think and makes you "work a bit"....and you generally appreciate the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Charlie Kaufman....then do not miss this masterpiece! I dare anyone to see this movie and not laugh out loud many times after which you will almost always feel a twinge of regret for being that amused. You will leave the theater in one of 2 ways: 1)Asking yourself why you just wasted 2 hrs watching something that made no sense whatsoever...or 2)Making a firm decision to not waste your life obsessed about regret, filled with the unforgiven.... while living vicariously through others. A sermon for the neurotic modern masses. A wake-up call.
Grabs you immediately as your hands grab hold of your seat (which you are on the edge of...). First Bond sequel so you could legitimately see it as Casino Royal 2 (think Kill Bill 2)! This movie is worthy just as Daniel Craig has become Connery's equal...or better! Loved the "cut-a-ways" during many of the fight scenes. They gave these fast, torrid, violent rumblings some visual poetry. Loved the determination behind Bond's eyes & manners as he ransacked like a terminator toward his goal....almost more machine than human! Loved the relationship between M & Bond. These two are psychologically intertwined better than any M/Bond before! Bond at his best! Don't miss it. I'm going back for seconds - something I rarely do. Can't wait!
