Top notch actors doing their best with the material on hand does not save this ridiculous, silly movie. We must assume that the writer-director was going for suspense and horror. To achieve this he needs to tell a tale that traps the audience in a web of tension and urgency. This does not happen here. There are so many instances when the truth should have been uncovered but does not - we are left frustrated and perplexed. When the audience becomes frustrated, confused and perplexed we have little room or patience to be filled with horror and suspense. The final blow to credulity is the final scene with funeral parlor director Neeson and the little boy "protege" riding off into the night. Aw ..... come on now?! Pure silliness.
This is not really a "horror movie" .... it is a "horrible movie". The one thing that a horror movie should be - above all else is - scary .... at least at times. Save yourself both time & money and skip this "waste of both". I kept thinking that a bunch of first year college kids took an interim course and the final was making a movie. They called up their uncle, Robert Patrick, and begged him to appear in it.... which he did out of pure love and because he absolutely did not have anything else to do. Scary bad!
Being a huge fan of The Office - and the potential of a Tina Fey + Steve Carell match-up - my expectations were fairly high. While there were several laugh-out-loud scenes these were often drowned out by too much silence in-between the guffaws. We all wanted to keep laughing - all the time - throughout the whole flick - but it simply fails to give us this release. It's as if the movie eventually starts to take off like a dragster and then immediately slams the brakes on. The scenario repeats itself several times. This one might be best to rent - so you can speed through the "un-funny" parts.
A roller coaster ride of a mystery-suspense movie that lets us in "on the hunt" for a serial killer that seems almost impossible to locate. The 152 minute Swedish language flick with English subtitles flies right along - never dragging - always keeping us engaged in new discoveries. My wife & I have not read the best-selling novel and yet we loved every nuance, twist & turn, surprise and uncovered clue the movie takes us to. My bet is that we will see much more of Noomi Rapace (the girl w the dragon tatttoo). She and Peter Harber - and all of the cast - are terrific! Several people who are devotees of the book said as we left the theater that the film was "perfect". They were very impressed by how much the film exemplifies the book! We highly recommend seeing this excellent adult movie!
Many professional critics have "ravaged" this epic action adventure re-make and TheMovieRhino thinks there is some uppity movie snobbery going on here. This is not a great movie but it is a fun, action-packed, epic-themed, visually-panoramic, 3D romp! The creatures are interesting, the adventure will draw you in and the acting is top-notch for this genre of "Gods vs. Man" Olympian tale. My primary beef with this sprawling saga is the 3D which I doubt is worth the extra money. There are very few scenes that the 3D appeared to have enhanced. I may see it in 2D just to satisfy my curiosity about this. Have some fun - see it in 2 or 3D! "Release your inner-Kracken!"
Really not expecting too much from this movie and we were pleasantly surprised by the acting, music, story & message. Miley Cyrus expands her acting chops, veteran Greg Kinear added perfect seasoning and newcomer Liam Hemsworth was also very good. While not a perfect movie it is easy to watch and relate to. It's biggest downfall is in trying to be too obvious at times in it's "setup" & the "pay-off". All in all this is an enjoyable, lyrical tale of life's twists & turns and hard lessons learned.
Joon-ho Bong just became one of my favorite directors with this creative, unusual masterpiece of film-making. The 128 minutes flew by. This movie has so many textures - takes so many fascinating twists and turns - it has more superior plot, dialogue, pacing, editing and cinematography than any movie that I have seen yet this year. Did I mention the cinematography? Amazing! Gorgeous! There are at least 8 cinematic scenes where the camera shows us things we rarely see - these visuals alone are worth the price of admission. This film will hold you in it's power as it builds towards a great ending....and then - at the end - it will grab you by the nape of your neck and give you a good shake! Marvelous film-making! Bravo to all involved!
This one may work for guys in their 20's who have not gotten their "gross-out guy humor" fix in for the week but for the rest of us the 15 minutes of inventive humor is not worth sitting through 85 minutes of "F bombs", misogynistic rants & "teeny-bopper sex talk". Really disappointed to see John Cusack sink this low. My wife got up & walked out after 30 minutes, kissed me on the cheek, explained she could not take the pure raunch any longer, said she would read a book in the lobby & wait for me. I stuck it out thinking maybe there would be a pay-off if some kind. My better half had it right.
Dreamworks sculpts a fun, exciting 3D tale of adventure that is perfect for every age. Every bit as enjoyable as Avatar and it may take the "riding on the back of a flying reptile" experience to a whole new level of visual amazement! Intertwined with gorgeous next generation 3D animation is an engaging story about a Viking lad who is anxious to be accepted as a "great viking warrior" but finds a different path to the realization of his inherent potential. Into this fantastical, textured, colorful journey we are invited along for a great ride. Fun for all! Don't miss it in a 3D theater.
Never mind the several implausibilities that can be found in The Lightkeepers! They are more than overwhelmed by so many good things in this whimsical love story about crusty old men, young cynical men and the persistence and joy that can always be found in love between a man and a woman. Richard Dreyfuss returns to the sea 30+ years after successfully evading a serial killer shark. This time his elusiveness fails against a much more persistent adversary - the affairs of the heart and the love of his life - yes, that would be a woman. Dreyfuss's lightkeeper alone is worth the price of admission but we also get a marvelous seashore backgound with gorgeous cinematography! A great little movie that will make you yearn for a vacation near a lighthouse on a craggy shorline..
