Joan Rivers is a "Nice Piece of Work"!

We have followed Joan Rivers career for at least 45 years! She is truly an institution, an icon and a trail-blazer in the world of comedy. This documentary is eye-opening, engrossing, funny (of course), educational, informing, sad and liberating. We learn a lot about what makes Joan Rivers tick - what drives her. Her incredible career is propelled by her equally incredible and burdensome sense of insecurity. If you ever doubted that insecurity is at the heart of many artist (& comedian's) success then this documentary will enlighten you and convince you. Kudos to all involved - especially Joan Rivers! Thank you Joan for letting us see you with all of your wrinkles and "warts". We all have them but it takes some guts to expose them and let us all see them. Like all humans there is joy and sadness in your life and we can celebrate yours as we all should our own! Don't miss this one!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Knight & Day is a Fun Romp - But Suspend All Logic

Crusie and Diaz have chemistry and Knight and Day provides them the opportunity to put that chemistry on full display. What makes this action-romantic-comedy work - for it's 110 minutes - is the non-stop action that begins very early on and maintains itself at a ferocious pace right up to the end. Whew! If you are looking for a subtle spy thriller or a lot of pure romantic comedy then this film will likely not deliver for you. On the other hand if you want to board a roller coaster for an adrenaline rush ride enhanced by that famous Tom Cruise grin then Knight and Day will just as likely "fill the bill", "trip your trigger" & "make your day"! See it!

PIXAR does it Once Again with Toy Story 3! Wow!

How many movie trilogies have you seen where the first movie is fantastic and sets new standards for quality story-telling, #2 is better than #1 and #3 is even better than #2? Rare accomplishment indeed and that is what has been achieved with Toy Story 3! The universal acclaim is justified and well-deserved. The animation always gets a bit better, all of our favorite toys are back and, this time, the story has added depth and texture as, through osmosis, Toy Story becomes "Boy to Man Story", with Andy setting off to attend college. Appropriately this one has a few darker, scarier elements that are deftly handled and the analogies to life-learned lessons are everywhere and so well done. A truly great work of animated story-telling art! We can all only hope that in our lives we will find our own versions of Woody and Buzz! Hurry to your local movie theater ...and beyond!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Solitary Man Has A Universal Message - Well Done!

May be Michael Douglas's best acting role ever - as good as anything he has ever done - in The MovieRhino's opinion. This is not an easy movie to watch. It will make you squirm - or at least it should. Having said that - do not shoot the messenger! No one should leave the theater thinking "boy - if I could just be like Michael Douglas's character that would be groovy!" One of the great aspects of this film is that it is consistent and relentless. It does not let up or "cave in" at the end when it could have carved out a "happy ending". No easy finale here! The wolf is still a wolf even when it is down to it's last scrap of meat! An adult morality tale that is worthy of a viewing by all adults. A "priority re-set button" for your moral compass. See it!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Jonah Hex is a Fun Ride - But Not a Masterpiece

In the category of post-Civil War, supernaturally-infused, scarred-faced anti-hero, comic book movies Jonah Hex gets high marks (like it's the only flick to fit such a weird category)! Josh Brolin does an A+ job as the scarred vengence-seeker Hex. Malkovich, Arnett & Fox are all okay - nothing special. That said - how does an 81 minute action movie end up feeling too long? Answer: Below par story, script, editing and pacing ... and that's a shame! Could have & should have been a lot more. Needed to be "fleshed out" more and should have "lingered" a bit at some stages to create some texture. In the end it is a comic book movie about a supernaturally imbued bounty hunter roaming the old west delivering justice to evil-doers! Worth a matinee viewing or rental.

Chop! Chop! The K-Kid is Better Than Expected!

I was resisting going to this re-make as I have a very fond memory of the original and just could not imagine what good could come out of doing it all over again. Glad we went. Nice work from all involved. This time "the kid" is actually a kid instead of a 20+ year old pretending to be one. Jaden Smith does an adequate job but the real stars in this re-thinking are Jackie Chan and China. The entire film is shot in China and we loved the imagery and cinematography. Jackie Chan is perfect in this role as the janitor with the hidden talents and the pain in his past. Yes - it is predictable but it is still well done and enjoyable. There is plenty enough here to recommend everyone to see it on the big screen.

The A-Team Gets A B+

The A-Team provides all you should be expecting from this big-screen remake of the popular action TV series.....and maybe a bit more. Top-notch acting, action-galore, explosions, suspense, fiendish plot with a nefarious villain, big sets, fun dialogue, character chemistry, etc. - all can be devoured here scrumptiously. My only complaint is the oft-times frenetic camera work which is hard to follow and, perhaps, hides some detail that is either there....or not. Overall this is a crazy, fun ride that will tickle just about every boy's fancy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A well done character morality tail that will force you to recognize yourself and many people you know in the meanderings of the main characters. They are all flawed as we are. Writer-director Holofcener does a marvelous job of making us think while we are grinning at the same time. The editing, dialogue and acting are all top notch! My only minor complaint is the ending as I really wanted to spend some more time watching these people. Kudos to all of the creative team and artists involved.

Splice Misses The Cut By a Longshot!

Oh - where to begin? Let's start with some really bad acting by Academy Award winner Brody ....and most of the rest of the lead cast as well. While we are at it let us mention bad dialogue, ridiculous plot contrivances and a general lack of suspense and horror. I'm just not sure what the primary goal of writer-director Natali was? Best I can tell it was to make a statement about not cloning or manipulating human genes. The impact is weak and so the message is weak as well. On the good side there are a few interesting creature effects and scenes - maybe about 10 minutes total - just not enough to make this one a "see it".
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Killers May Leave you Wounded....

Flip a coin on this one. I liked the first half and was still okay at the midpoint ....but then it just went nuts.... not often in a good way. By the end of the movie everyone apparently was a high level spy hitman (or hitwoman). That is when it stopped being funny and interesting for me ....it just seemed "groaningly goofy". There are enough yuks here to recommend seeing if you have lots of extra movie bucks laying around .... or maybe take-in at the dollar theater ..... or rent via NetFlix in 2 months.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
