This Film is Far More Than Alright - It's A+

The acting, dialogue and script in this movie are all really very good .... high-end movie art. This is an adult movie with nudity and s*x and, I will say, that some of the s*x displayed graphically is gratuitous and unnecessary. That said - great acting can be enjoyed in this character-drama-love story that shows what a "post-nuclear" LA-ish liberal "family" can look like - ala sperm donor seeks and finds the evolutionary outcome of his donations. I could have gone a subjective route and allowed my political and moral principles to rule my thoughts about this movie and it would have had 2 stars with a "don't see it" attached. If you can remain objective and politically detached you should thoroughly enjoy this film and the acting ensemble.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Loved the Cautionary Tale - I Am Love! See it!

With this role Tilda Swinton jumps into the MovieRhino's Top Five world class movie actresses - joining the likes of Blanchette, Streep, Mirren and Winslet. Amazing piece of work! The overall film itself is no less stupendous. It is rich, textured, original, believable, beautiful to look at, perfectly edited and scripted, gorgeously filmed and expertly acted by all of the artists involved. I honestly felt at the end of the movie that it should have cost more for a ticket as we actually got about 5 movies in 1 and all 5 were great! We got the aristocratic tale of inheritance and treachery. We got an erotic tale of forbidden love. We got a "Tom Jones-like" allegory between cuisine and sensuality. We got the sudden twist at the end that changes everything .... and we have a film that is one of the most perfect visually that I have ever seen. Bravo to all involved!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Predators - a Tale of 2 Movies - 1 Good / 1 Bad...

The problem with Predators is not the acting - Adrien Brody did a nice job as did all of the other leads and character actors. The problem is not the special effects or cinematography - both are fine to excellent. The problem is the story itself. The first half was fun, original and inventive. We got wrapped up in it - right up to the point where Samuel Jackson makes his entrance and we first see his face. What a great moment! Then everything goes downhill at a fairly rapid pace. The movie becomes cookie cutter and inane at times. It loses it's spark, it's creativity and it's passion. It is as if it simply gives up trying and decides to repeat an old formula and in doing so it wimps out. Adrien is no Arnold. First half gets 4 stars and the last half gets 2 or less. Conclusion - rent this one or see it at a discount theater in 2 months.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Despicable AND Irresistable!

What a joy of a movie. Stylishly inventive with gorgeous animation, great characters and voice acting, a deviously fun plot and some unexpected pathos and sobering moments where some important life lessons are learned - all this and much more - make "Despicable Me" a must see .... and a MovieRhino Top 10 movie for 2010. You will laugh, you will snicker, you will be amazed and you will get a lump in your throat .... and you will appreciate all of those feelings. It would be despicable to miss this one - see it!

MicMacs is a Fun Ride that should Not be Missed!

An original, ingenious and enjoyable film from start to finish. What a great tasting stew this is. Start with some "Alice in Wonderland", mix in a bit of "Forrest Gump" and a just a dash of "Mad Max Thunderdome" and let the whole thing simmer is a world unique to itself - a whimsical - yet believable - group of hyper-talented outcasts living in a refuge within a junk yard which they have turned into a high tech "Santa's workshop" with all the creature comforts including a mother figure with master culinary skills. No way to explain this movie here. Just make yourself smile and go see it! Worth the "side trip"!

Cyrus is a dark romantic comedy worth seeing....

With John C. Reilly movies, lately, it has been hit or miss. Nothing he has done quite approaches his role in the movie Chicago a few years back and his amazing song & performance of "Mr. Cellophane Man" in the same movie. His work in Cyrus is top-notch and reminds us all of just how good he can be. Tomei, Keener & Hill do not disappoint and add to the dark comedic richness in this film. Original, dark, funny, dangerous, unpredictable, quirky and sad are all apt adjectives to describe this film and the feelings it will illicit. Worth seeking out in theaters. See it!

The Sun is Rising on this Newest Twilight!

I'm not a "Twi-hard" and I've never read the books - really did not care all that much about the first 2 movies. That said this 3rd film in the series is worthwhile - better than the first 2. The actors are maturing, the dialogue is better, the pacing and script is better. I liked the editing much better in this one as well. Eclipse is just a "meatier" film. It gives all of us something more substantial we can "sink our teeth into". The dynamic tension between the werewolves and the vampires is well portrayed and the caste system within the vampire world is interesting. The romance is there in all it's glory for the 13 to 22 year old females but the special effects action battle/fight scenes are satisfying enough for male viewers. See it!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Airbender loses Steam Fast - Falls Flat!

From previews and hype we were really looking forward to this movie and, hopefully, a return to magic with Shyamalan. Alas this film continues the downward spiral for the director that once demonstrated he had a "sixth sense". Except for some of the visual effects - some of which were too often repeated and over-used - this fantasy flick misses the mark on many levels. Do not want to bore everyone with a long list of the negatives .... suffice to say that the star of the movie - the Airbender himself - was deficient in his acting acumen, actually being the worst actor in the movie. Goes without saying that this is not a good thing. He had the look and many nice (too often repeated) physical moves BUT these very much overshadowed his attempts to act. Plastic dialogue spoken stiltedly. Yikes! Skip this one. Maybe Netflix in 3 months.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Exit Through ... Is a Gift Worth Giving Yourself!

Exit Through the Gift Shop is a must-see documentary for everyone over 17 year old (it is rated R). Guaranteed that you will not look at graffiti, suburban wall art the same way - ever again. On the other hand - to be frank - there are scenes in this film that had me shaking my head, laughing, saying "oh no" under my breath, thinking to myself "I hope they arrest that guy and lock him up" while, at the same time, feeling an "admiration" for the sheer act of blatant vandalism (that really goes beyond my code of right vs. wrong). Overall - a great documentary that will shift your paradigm regarding street art! See it!

The Square is A+ Film Noir Dripping in Irony!

The Movie Rhino loves these small well-conceived and well-put-together tales of people trapped in a world of their own un-doing. Warning - do not get to the theater late as you do not want to miss any of the short that opens before the main film. It is more integral and connected to the main movie than you will know until the end. Everything about this film is enjoyable - the cinematography, dialogue, editing, pacing, acting - all top notch. A very well done film that earns it's place in TheMovieRhino's TOP 10 for 2010 at this juncture! Seek this one out at theaters that show independent films! Worth your efforts to find it!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
