The Last 30 minutes Should have been Exorcised!

I enjoyed the first 2/3 of The Last Exorcism. What a shame that the writers and director lost their way in the last 30 minutes and decided to give us "clarity" when a lingering mystery would have more than sufficed. Really liked the acting and actors and the documentary style. Cannot recommend the movie due to the silly and weak ending. Maybe rent this one on NetFlix for Halloween couch fest.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

AVATAR 3D IMAX is like a fine wine ....

....it seems to just get better with age. When Avatar first was released I saw it twice in IMAX 3D and once in regular digital theater 3D. I like it better each time .... and this time is no exception. This "special edition" I am assuming is like a director's cut and it is better than the original. The added scenes simply add to the texture and depth - and, when you are watching a gorgeous sunset, when don't you want it to last as long as possible. The rare film that gets better every time you see it. We watch it in Blu Ray at home on the home big screen and it is still intact in it's breathtaking visuals and scope! An epic achievement deserving of all the universal accolades it has garnered.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Piranha 3D - B movie gets an A

You must know what to expect - simply from the title, posters and "genre" of this B movie "skin & scare" flick! Anyone complaining that this movie lacks substance and/or intricate plot and dialogue should quit missing their therapy appointments. In the realm and style of this type of B movie - Piranha 3D gets an A-. There are holes in the story and plot - everywhere - but that's just not the point. The movie succeeds exactly where it wants and needs to succeed - scary evil prehistoric glutenous Piranha ..... blood and gore under the water - attacking innocent, beautiful, nubile young women and men as they frolic on school break ..... 2D plot with decent 3D effects .... familiar stars in supporting roles to give just a little heft .... and even a somewhat surprising final scene! If you just go with the flow you will likely enjoy this 3DB movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

No Ifs, Ands or Buts - What if....is a Must See!

How great is it that Christian-themed movies are getting high end treatment with world class actors these days?! Kevin Sorbo, Kristy Swanson and John Ratzenberger are excellent in this enjoyable, funny, dramatic movie about listening to God and his best plans for our lives. The movie is well done on every level - no cardboard cookie cutouts here - and much of it hits home. Congratulations and kudos to Jerry and Dallas Jenkins and their talented crew. Please keep up the quality work and make more movies with a true-to-life Christian theme! The country and the Christian community are craving these films about surrendering to the will of God and his amazing plans for our lives! Hallelujah!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Switch Doesn't Quite Make The Grade - Rent it

The premise in The Switch is intriguing but the story that is portrayed on screen is just not believable. For the movie to have the maximum emotional impact we need to believe that some of these character's motivations and actions could be true. There are some funny moments - especially when Jeff Goldblum is on the screen - but there are not enough of them to make this film a knee-slapping comedy. Maybe I'm a bit jaded from seeing Jennifer Aniston play the "same character" over and over again. Not sure - but I know that the scenes that kept me engaged in this movie added up to maybe 20 or 30 minutes and that is just not enough to recommend shelling out hard-earned movie money for. Wait a couple of months and rent this one.

Nanny McPhee Returns is a Worthy Sequel....

Nanny McPhee Returns and it is all in good fun as lessons are learned with a little Nanny-magic and natural consequences. This family, child-oriented, comedy is a worthy sequel to the first film. McPhee appears just in time as a family appears to be on the verge of being swallowed up by rebellious children acting out, an unscrupulous uncle, debt that cannot be repaid and oceans of "mud and poo". Children in the theater laughed at the appropriate times all throughout the movie and adults will enjoy the film almost as much as watching their kids enjoy it!

Scott Pilgim Originality Strikes the Right Chords!

Must admit I had low expectations for this movie and this may have influenced my favorable review. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire film - cast, acting, dialogue, cinematography, plot, characters, pacing, action scenes, etc. - especially the "quirky little bits" that were sprinkled all throughout the film. This is more than just a movie for comic book geeks and teenagers. It is well-suited for any adult to relish and enjoy and I recommend that you seek it out. I kept thinking that it was a shame that Frank Miller had not used the same flow and technique for The Spirit. It would have served that movie well. A fun, original movie that will make you think a bit as well. See it!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Eat Pray Love - Good Travelogue - Weak Movie

The theater was packed. Possibly 300+ women and about 10 guys. We knew, generally, what to expect .... and the movie fell within those expectations. I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would as I went with the flow and looked at it like a well-filmed travelogue with a "back-story". The acting was fine - especially Richard Jenkins. It's just that there was not a whole lot to empathize with. Julia Roberts did her best to portray the narcissistic lead character but she almost made her too likable. Perhaps women will relate better to this movie as it stimulates fantasies of "leaving everything behind" to "find oneself". Genetically speaking guys may simply have a more difficult time relating. Gorgeously filmed.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Expendables is an Over-The-Top Action Romp!
PostedAugust 16, 2010

The Expendables is NOT "Shakespeare In Love" - NOR does it pretend to be. On this weekend it is the male antidote for "Eat, Pray, Love" - and it well succeeds. It is the fun, crazy, violent, action, macho, shoot-em-up that it purports to be .... and it does it all very well .... as long as you accept the genre and premise. The weakest part of this "boys, muscles and their guns" flick is the last 25 minutes where it descends into explosive cliche ... and we have simply seen it all before. The best parts are the tongue-in-cheek humor and the unexpected scenes that throw you off a bit (I mean - Micky Rourke has the most emotional speech in this movie and he chokes up - no violence from Micky - just tattoos, sensitivity and tears). A quick, violent, crazy romp - generally pretty well done. Give it a go.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Get Low Gets High Marks - See it!

Robert Duvall may be America's finest movie actor over the last 40 years - broadly considered. I have trouble coming up with a role that he has "phoned in" - where one could consider that he has performed weakly or badly. At the same time - when one stops to think - how many great movies has he been a part of? Tons of great movies - from The Godfather - to Apocalypse Now - to the made for TV movie The Great Santini - to the historic TV mini-series Lonesome Dove ....I could go on and on. Nobody could top his resume of work. Get Low continues and emphasizes his quality character acting. Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek are also both in fine form and add to the texture, humor and pathos in this character study/morality tale. Do not miss Get Low! Solidly in TheMovieRhino's Top 10 for 2010!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
