Mark Ruffalo plays an uber hip and opportunistic sperm donor who runs an organic farm coop and restaurant. He just happens to have two really great nearly-grown kids raised by a lesbian couple, adorably played by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. The kids find Ruffalo and everyone struggles with his cloyingly easy-going demeanor.

Great movie about marriage, leaving home and sorting out life. Annette Bening was FABULOUS! and so was Julianne Moore. The irony is that it is the best movie about marriage I have seen and the two people can't get married legally - Poignant, laugh out loud and touching. GO

Annette Bening was brilliant in this story of a contemporary family. I loved the way the relationships in this movie were shown but not explained. We, the audience, were not subjected to having to have every detail of the relationships spelt out to us, but were allowed the luxury of observing, digesting and drawing our own conclusions as to why things were as they were. Not sure I totally liked the way it began as funny and lighthearted and gradually got more serious and intense. Would have liked more balance in mood through the movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

All of the 5 major actors in this movie, including the 2 kids are great....but Annette Bening was outstanding in her portrayal of a complex character. she was much, much better than I would have expected....
overall, this movie gets better as it goes along, portraying an believable, non-whitewashed version of a non-traditional family

Excellent in every aspect. Humor, normalcy, truth of everyday marriage (all variations), very "real" dialogue between everyone.
Hopefully, this film - being very difficult for anyone to dispatch out-of-hand - will broaden and change a few more minds of Americans that same-sex marriage will only add more legitimate "fabric" to our country's human landscape.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The director's loose structure and style works in her favor to depict life's unforseeable causes and effects especially as they relate to issues of alcoholism, amorality, sexism, biology, coming-of-age, self-centeredness, and the Peter Pan syndrome. Luckily for her, too, she has a superb cast that glues the pieces together for a work that might otherwise have taken a nose-dive. The ambiguous ending could have been more so and the film could shed about 10 minutes, but it's definitely engaging.

This movie very accurately portrays the growing pains that any marriage and any family experiences. It does so with great humor and shows, rather than tells, the effect that an outsider may have in being the catalyst for the necessary growth. All of the characters are sympathetic, even the ostensible interloper portrayed by Mark Ruffalo.
As the movie reveals the strengths and weaknesses of each character, much attention is paid to the details that reveal their specific personalities. That is what makes this a great movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It doesn't matter that the parents are gay - the family faces crisis not unlike those of most families with long term marriages and difficult teens. The lense brings you right up close to each character and their emotions and struggles. There is no fairy tale here - just the messiness of life and a families effort to sort through those problems in a very public way. If you have lived life - you will relate. If not, learn. Not appropriate for young teens.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The best film I've seen all year. An incredibly well structured story, great dialogue, and a completely fresh approach to making a very funny, very moving film. The actors are all superb.
This film miraculously makes you laugh through incredibly awkward, uncomfortable, deeply upsetting situations. Ultimately you are forced to question what truly makes a family, and to think about how fragile marriages and families are - what with there always being something imperfect/ unsatisfying about them, leading us to search for something seductive/ threatening outside of the unit.
Quality movie making is back!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

"Of course we're not happy. We're CONTENT." That line, said by middle-aged parents to their newly adult offspring, was hilarious in the Sixties movie "Lovers and Other Strangers." In "The Kids are All Right" we're left with the same message, this time supposedly carrying deep meaning. Insight eludes this film as it touches on, but never understands, its own attitudes toward marriage, sex, alcoholism, drugs, adolescent rebellion, bourgeois lifestyles and biological parental ties. Lesbian characters do not save this film from being anything more than an insultingly dumb chick flick.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

no spoilers, but the guy (mark ruffalo) doesn't stand a chance right from the beginning of this script. he can't win for losing. he's open and straightforward at first and later makes a mistake (which i don't approve of). but he doesn't do it alone, yet he gets blamed and bashed, and is given no tears, hugs, beg-for-forgiveness-speech or redemption at the end. he's just a cad. that's a loaded, unfair premise. so the movie doesn't have as much tension as it claims. still, it's great to have a gritty, long-term lesbian relationship portrayed in an american movie. and the actors are all good. so it's a welcome breakthrough. but with a somewhat bogus story at its core. it still should be seen. a lot in it is new, unprecedented.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
