The director's loose structure and style works in her favor to depict life's unforseeable causes and effects especially as they relate to issues of alcoholism, amorality, sexism, biology, coming-of-age, self-centeredness, and the Peter Pan syndrome. Luckily for her, too, she has a superb cast that glues the pieces together for a work that might otherwise have taken a nose-dive. The ambiguous ending could have been more so and the film could shed about 10 minutes, but it's definitely engaging.
