The trailers for Avatar sucked me in and I'm ecstatic that they did! The movie although being 2:40 in length didn't feel that way at all. The 3D (which I recommend highly if going to see it) effects helped pull you into a magical/primitive world. I just read in another review before writing this that the plot is basically a love story, which is true, however there are some great sub-plots also; such as man vs nature, business/military vs science, and whether humans have the right to take what they desire from what we deem to be a primitive culture? I take PE's warning, "Don't believe the hype" to heart, however in THIS case, it's definitely alright to suspend that belief!

It was a feast for the eyes, with a very simple plot. The film itself is groundbreaking with the methods used to bring this world to the screen. Worthwhile seeing if only for the gorgeous effects.

Not quite mindless entertainment, but no plot or theme surprises. You've seen the story before. It's very reminiscent of Terrence Malick's "The New World," itself a visually lush film. lame stock dialogue, lame stock characters, the actors phoned it in. Score sounded like a replica of Amistad, with no reason for that replica. Why did they have African accents when speaking English? If they had their own language, then the accent sound be based on the photactic constraints of that language. Not some "idea" that nature people are African. Ridiculous and embarrassing film. Thanks for trying to manipulate us, Hollywood.

Let's get over the really cool 3D stuff and astounding animation. Admitted--it's a visual treat. But 2 hours and 50 minutes of a paper thin plot, lousy dialogue, traditional white-man messiah saves (blue, this time) natives and gets the sexiest girl, good triumphs over the evil empire and I had a migraine. There is no sense of a deep mythology as there is in Lord of the Rings, to which it has been unfairly (to LOTR) compared. There is nothing innovative as far as plot lines at all. Go for the visuals, but don't expect much else.

I loved this movie. I had been waiting for almost a year, and saw it in 3-D last night. The visual effects help to create a believable setting into which you can immerse yourself. Lot's of action will have you on the edge of your seat. The newspaper reviews state that this is fundamentally a love story, and I agree, however it's one set in a fantastic alien envirnoment. I was initially unsure about the plot line, but it works itself out in the movie. I look foward to seeing this movie again, and I expect I will see a lot more detail.

Typical fantasy/action flick, nothing interesting or compelling about the storyline or the characters. Interestingly, although it might be characterized as a "cartoony" flick, the characters were less so than in Cameron's "Titanic." Sigourney Weaver turned in a good performance. Otherwise, ignore the pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo and concentrate on the fun, and it's certainly ok.
On the technical side, the CGI was great, although the 3D seemed a bit uneven at times. For example, some of the shots of ships flying past seemed to have no 3D at all, while the shots in the forest of the ash floating around seemed almost as if it was falling in my lap.
So it looks like we're not quite there yet with 3D. Another 10 years, who knows?

Great movie. My wife and I are senior citizens and this is normally not the kind of movie my wife would go to see but we went with our son and it was tremendous. Where to start with Avatar? I didn't get to see the Imax showing as it was sold out 3 days in a row, but the regular 3d version is still impressive. The world is extremely rich and detailed, and it's seamless...you really feel like The planet is real, the creatures are real, the people are real. The action sequences are incredible, with no detail missing. Continuity in this movie is spot on, and the characters all play their roles extremely well. You can really see parallels to human history with the Na'vi, which makes this movie touch your heart. All in all, on a scale of 1-10, this movie is a 100. If you haven't seen it GO NOW!.
