There is no doubt that the special effects and 3D are very good. But I think the wonderful story that was beginning to develop got lost in the last 45 minutes of the film. Up until that point the film was beginning to present a very subtle and engaging look at the futility and senselessness of war and power hungry predators (the Americans). The contrast between the narrow minded super power and the gentle and loving way of life of the indigenous people presented such a contrast but it got lost in the much too long battle at the end of the movie. It is a movie that could have been much better and taken its place among other great films with a message.

The 3D is fabulous and the attention to detail in the animation is stunning. I didn't leave my seat for the full 2'40" (very difficult after the large soda) not wanting to miss a minute. The plot is straight-up Dances with Wolves with a Matrix twist and there are some over the top moments/characters, but I think everyone who likes sci-fi will LOVE this movie. This will appeal to men and women alike, as it is an action movie and a love story.

If you are going to a movie starved for the absolute best in CGI technology, then Avatar is the best movie you will ever have seen in your life up to now. If CGI is your life, then go see this movie. You need to see it. Avatar is your cinematic soul mate. For the rest of us who want to see a good movie with a strong story and characters we can come to care about? Not so much. Things blow up good - REAL good - in Avatar, and there are lots of glowing things and many, many, many, many bright colors. That's what you get for three hours. That and Sigourney Weaver. It may not be the worst film ever, but the lower your expectations walking into this movie, the easier it will be for you to enjoy it.

Special effects and 3D are amazing. New agey religiosity, trite save the earth-ish blue people and interpretive dance routines are SILLY. You'd think someone spending multi-hundreds of millions on a movie would have somebody on the payroll to ask he question, "Do you think that's a little trite?" or Haven't I seen that before?"

Still, the blue people didn't lose me, and it's worth the price of admission just for the effects, but this ain't no Aliens or T-2.

Reminded me of a Tarzan movie. White alien dude helping a lot of ignorant black tribal aliens. Notice the aliens had black features, dreads, big lip, big behinds etc.... Especially the love interest alien, she had thebehind of a girl in a rap video. (That's the only thing I liked about the movie) I also was thinking,"why do aliens have make love the same way as humans?" Couldn't they come up with something a little different? 3D was awsome! Could see this one several times. Sure, it is kind of the same old storyline but still a great flick. Would highly recomend to all. Went with my sons (30 something) and they flipped out. Said it was like seeing Star Wars when they were 7 years old. GO SEE IT!!!

Special effects are breathtaking at first. But the story and characters conspire to take your mind off the effects and plunge you into the story itself. The movie is not perfect - some characters are too comic-bookish/over-the-top. However, the effects are revolutionary and the story is good so its still an excellent movie.

I can not remember a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed as much as "Avatar 3D". The effects were seamless and helped engage the viewer into the story. The 3D was the best I've ever seen. It honestly looked like you could reach out and touch the environment. And on top of all that the story was engaging and even touching at times. At many points during the movie my jaw literally dropped in awe. I personally never see movies more than once in the theater, but I've seriously considered seeing this one again. It's a must see.

Avatar is technically superb but tediously preachy. It has all the usual cliches: noble savages, ruthless and evil capitalists (from a "dying" planet no less), mindless thugs fighting for the evil capitalists, environmental pillage etc, etc.
2 Stars with a oakleaf cluster for yawn factor.

You absolutely must see Avatar in 3D. Cameron did a fantastic job of adding depth to the visual effects in 3D. The storyline is solid, but the real star of the movie is the visual wonders. Amazing!

So let's be honest we've seen this story before. It isa mixture of "Pocohontus" and "Dances with Wolves" . Therein lies the only real flaw. "Avatar" is quite simply the most visually stunning motion picture I think I've ever seen. In 3D, the experience is totally engrossing. The incredibly believable biology and tangibility of the CG world and the creatures that inhabit it is stunning. This film will take your breath away. Combined with top-notch acting, "Avatar" is one of the most rewarding movie-going experiences you will have all year. "Avatar" restores one's faith in Hollywood magic.

OK i entered the movie didn't get good seats oh well its ok but this movie is a must watch for anyone into color and action and mixture of things this movie has it all James Cameron has done it again made this movie so amazing and the 3d effects couldn't get over them the movie is real pretty and it will blow you away so go watch it
