While the 3D wasn't really necessary, the visuals and the effects were beautiful. I thought there were glimpses of a story, sort of a scifi combination of "Dances with Wolves" and "Ferngully", but it all fell apart after the first few minutes and got less believable. The bad guys were bad for the sake of being bad and none of characters were really developed. Sigourney Weaver looks really good as a blue alien, though!

Few movies have the potential to positively influence a young generation when their elders are showing such poor judgement. AVATAR teaches kids that other cultures are not "evil" and deserved to be understood, not for the purpose of destroying them from inside, but to respect their different ways. It teaches kids that sending the military to pilfer their resources is wrong, wether Na'Vi, Native Americans or Iraqis. Technically, AVATAR is amazing. The Na'Vi people look and act so realistically that you won't believe they are not actors in costumes. The 3D effect tend to wear off and taking your glasses off for a few seconds helps restore the illusion. Two hours and forty minutes is long. I wish it had gone on longer...

I was asked if I would recommend this movie to a friend. My answer is "yes" and "no".
I saw this movie in 3D and it was visually entertaining, hence my "yes".
However, I found the story trite and preachy. Hence my "no". Also, the foul language was excessive and unnecessary.
The movie is nearly three hours long. The visual entertainment value for me wore off after about two and the story didn't carry me through to the end.
See it for its visual artistry, but take a puke bag if your not a flaming liberal.

Though it could have been shortened by at least 30 minutes, there was no need for all the banter between the coloniel and corporate jock, I thought the 3D was explosive with color bringing more thrill to the show. A standard story of callous imperialism triumphed by "humanity". Seen it over and over --- Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, District 9 . Still, AVATAR was spectacular, well-conceived and deeply moving. Sure the characters were so clearly stereotypical that black and white hats were not needed. Still, with Iraq and Afghanistan raging, and our trampling of the Native American culture a national disgrace - I found it deeply resonant. There was no subtlety. And yet, I have recommended this film to all of my friends.The technological advances in the making of this film did not overwhelm the story. Visually stunning and gorgeous -- colorful -- ALIVE! The 3-D enhanced the movie viewing but was secondary.

Great FX, great movie. Very few slow parts. The only complaint I have is the slight preachyness about loving everyone and the environment. I cant help but think it relates to colonialism and capitalism being bad. And how white people, and in this case, all of humanity will wipeout other civilizations that get in the way, that seems to be the underlying point. Al Gore would wet his pants.

I went to see the movie a bit skeptical given the massive buildup. It was much better than I expected. I was completely entranced by the film from beginning to end. It's a solid story and the 3-D is stunning, used to create total immersion in a new world instead of as a gimmick. Great movie.

Avatar is simply amazing. This movie was so entertaining that I couldn't believe 3 hours passed! I was exhausted after watching it! I am astonished that the entire Avatar world wasn't real, because while you're watching, EVERYTHING seems real!!! I admire the imagination and artistry involved in creating such a world.
Also, it conjured up memories of "FernGully" and "The Last Samurai", which added to my positive connection with the characters. It also reminded me of the treatment of the American Indian.
In other words, I believe this is destined to be a classic. This reminds me of the "Star Wars" of my youth; a movie that has a hard hitting and lasting impact... This is a must see movie!!

With a fantastic budget like this, you see it all up on the screen. Sci Fi meets "Dances with Wolves." Stunning visuals and a completely realized off-world experience. I rate this movie as a "MUST SEE." . I say that the first half of the movie served it's purpose- to inspire the viewer to care about the world of Pandora, and the fierce but loving aliens that live as one with the forest. A wistful but nonetheless beautiful sentiment that makes you admire this fantasy tribe even more. You feel with the main character, who comes to side with the alien race and it's simplistic way of life. NOT for kids under the age of 5 however, because of the violence and scenes of high intensity drama.

I agree with the others that the effects and splendor of the movie were stunning. Too bad the director thought the story needed to be dumbed down for whatever reason. There was only one small part during the 2 1/2 + hour movie when I caught myself thinking it was a little slow. That thought lasted about 10 seconds, and never happened again. The plot will not shock anyone. But, the less-than-veiled sub-plots of environmental destruction and species genocide are very timely. An inter-species love story at the heart of this movie makes us realize we are not better than others, just slightly different. And, we should all respect those differences. The visuals are obviously what make this movie special. Adults will feel like kids watching this amazing movie for the first time. And, it's worth seeing again. Loved it!!! I do recommend seeing this film in 3-D. Just beautiful!!!

Avatar program very interesting. Visual fx were, of course, amazing. The 3D was great for about 30 minutes, until you got used to it and forgot you were watching 3D. It was artistically done, but unnecessary. Good visual effects cannot make a movie without a good story and I didn't buy this one at all. It got worse and more unbelievable as the movie went on. When bad guys are bad just for the sake of being bad, it doesn't work. There was no good argument for a conflict. Very heavy-handed in making a parallel about our current global political conflicts. Not subtle, and didn't "make you think." Dialogue was also too expository. Saving grace was visual scenery. Enough to recommend it. But it might be better on mute.

This movie was like a Michael Creighton book which gets you hooked from the first page and keeps up the momentum until the end. Great effects, Great Story, and None Stop Action. The special effects were the first of it's kind. Can't wait to see it again and see what special effects I missed.

The title of this review speaks for itself. You should see this in 3-d. I never imagined that 3D would be back like this. They have definetely improved the technology. Great Movie! Great Effects! Great Story! Great Acting! I cant find one thing wrong with this movie. Go see it!!

Honestly I had no idea what I was walking into, a christmas movie with my sister is tradition and it was the biggest thing out there. I LOVED it, so did my husband and daughter, I am planning on seeing it at least 2 more times before it leaves the theater, definately in 3D too.

Special effects were good. Ending fight sequence too long and too predictable. Dialogue like "Last of the Mohicans" meaning limited by the translation from one language into English. Good mostly because of this movie being a first of its kind.

James Cameron has taken immersive movies to another level.. Avatar sucks the viewer into another world, well conceived, and then poses the moral dilemma of "good or bad" to its principal protagonist. Totally engrossing and visually stunning; the storyline has echoes of "Dances with Wolves" and another animated movie from Australia, "Ferngully, the Last Rainforest." Overall go see the movie for the 3 D experience and pure entertainment!
