Given this was Barrymore's directorial debut, it could have been worse. Though it felt like whole scenes that would have driven the emotional arcs of the characters were missing, most of the cast is just right, which I would expect from an actor turned director. Daniel Stern is the best dad ever! Juliette Lewis plays an honorable villain. Drew directs herself well, too. The only astonishing disappointment was Jimmy Fallon. If you've ever been to an LA Derby Dolls bout, then you know how fun the announcers are, and Fallon’s voice CANNOT carry the derby scenes. This movie gives you a good taste of the action, but the real derby will give you the genuine whipped topping you were craving.

I loved this movie! It was nice to see a strong female role for a change. I think we need more movies like this, where the girl can be happy and strong without needing a guy. Ellen page did an amazing job as well as Drew Barrymore with her directing. And it was funny. I wanna watch it again :-) I will be definitely recommending this to my family and friends.

3 friends and I went to see Whip It. Two under 20 and 2 over. We all left feeling the movie was a good way to spend an evening. Although there were points where each of us had a "what is this movie" moment. Watching and learning about a sport we didn't know about was really neat however the relationships in the movie were kind of played out and a little strand. Ellen Page is amazing and it was nice to see her in a role where she smiled more and cared about something. This movie is a good way to spend an evening with friends but it won't change your life.

I couldn't help being reminded of another very funny film with Ellen Page, Juno (obviously), but this was also delightfully diiferent, with a nice dark side of roller derby culture. An excellent choice for cast, and an impressive directorial debut for Drew Barrymore! I'd recommend it to all my female friends, and do agree that guys who like action flicks or horror movies primarily, are not going to love this. (Another reviewer, who admitted not being the target audience for this film still gave it 3 out of 5 stars, so it has to be generally good for most adults.)

As a 28 year old guy, I was not the target market for this film, so it wasn't all that appealing to me. Having said that, its intended audience I think will enjoy it. The story is a pretty by-the-numbers-teenaged-girl-trying-to-find-herself tale, set in the backdrop of the Roller Derby scene in Austin, Tx. The actors seem to be having fun, and there are some heartfelt moments between Ellen Page and Marcia G a y Harden. I personally wish it had been a bit funnier, but overall I think Drew Barrymore could've done a lot worse for her directorial debut. It was a pleasant-enough experience. I don't think Ellen Page should've turned down the role in Sam Raimi's stellar horror film, "Drag Me to H e l l," for this though. :-)

This is a great movie! As a guy involved with an all female flat track roller derby league (Queen City Roller Girls) this movie did not disappoint. I'm not a movie snob, but its rare that I actually ENJOY a movie. This movie, for me, was pure bliss from start to end. Its funny and sweet and it doesn't hurt that there are 37 hot hot girls! I think that Drew Berrymore did an excellent job for her directorial debut and Ellen Page's acting was spot on, as usual.
My friend and I wore our free matching shirts out to the bar after the movie and used them to single (well double, i guess) handedly sell the movie to every person we came into contact with!

While the film seems to start slow, once it decides to start moving the contrast between what was and what it becomes has to be a choice. the film is inspirational, enthusiastic, loving and warm. the athletics have just the hint of 'Rocky' while maintaining a sense of fun. The competition, while real to the characters, is never taken to an extreme of 'win at all costs' seen in so many films of this kind. And the camera work amongst the skaters themselves during the bouts (not 'games') makes you feel as if you are there and adds a true sense of excitement. GO SEE THIS!!! Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is no fluke and a sheer pleasure.

The cast was great and the movie overall was very entertaining! The derby action sequences were fun to watch and it had a good message without being preachy!

I think the teen crowd might like this more. It's fairly formula in that it's a teen love story and a young girl who is trying to find herself. But, lightweight that it is, it's still enjoyable to watch and a lot of the comedy is funny. A little bit of drivel is entertaining and the movie entertains. Heck, Drew is a great gal and it's a good first effort.

It took awhile for this film to find it's legs ... was it going to be a quirky teen flick, a goofy comedy, a family comedy etc? But by the third act, everything came together nicely, and I found myself wanting more. It's a great first effort from Drew Barrymore with an all-star cast.
The film is also a great introduction to life in Austin! It made me miss my time there, and long to come back. I'll never forget the time I was run off the stage of a karaoke bar by a bunch of rollergirls ...

My daughter and I were extras in the movie filmed in an empty warehouse on the east side of Detroit. We had so much fun. Drew was very sweet and friendly. Jimmy Fallon was crazy although most of his part was cut out. WE also attended the skate party to promote the movie at Bonaventure Skating Rink in Farmington Hills, Mich. Drew stood around and let everyone take pictures. Although she tried to reach out more to the attendees, security officers were very protective.(but friendly). Drew autographed our movie poster. Of course we went to see the sneak preview of the movie and we each got our free Whip It t-shirt. The movie was great. Thanks Drew for providing a lot of fun to all of us in the Metro-Detroit area. Please come back soon.
