HD Opera from the MET is the best way the see Grand Opera!
It is amazing how the can make a film in one take, while doing a LIVE performance. The close-ups, the overhead shots, the back stage interviews, the Mega Opera Stars as host and hostesses is an incredible previlage for the viewer.
This was awesome!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Enjoyed the performance greatly. Liked the way the muse tied all the themes together and made the staging more cohesive. Sets for some scenes were disappointing. Costumes were excellent, though, and enhanced each tale. I do not enjoy the interviews with the performers as they are too staged and very trite. No unusual information is learned as a result of the interviews. I would prefer that the lights in the theatre go on right away and so we would have a longer intermission. However, it is more interesting when the backstage activities are shown and explained.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Hey! Would have loved to have seen it! Socked out by the blizzard of '09. Hope I can exchange tickets for the encore performance AND GET IN TO SEE IT IN THE SMALL THEATRE WITH ALL THE OTHER FOLKS WHO ARE TRYING TO RE-SCHEDULE. Why can't that Met on-line subscription show HD? I'd subscribe so I could watch HD performances (day of!) on my home TV.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

My first Hoffman. I was surprised and delighted. Loved the absynthe-fueled decadence of Act 1. Excellent acting, particularly Kate Lindsey. Marvelous singing and playing. Good to see Jimmy back in action; look forward to seeing him in February at the BSO. Some fff moments were too loud; don't know if it was the theater (AMC Randolph, MA) or the Met feed. Interviews also on the loud side. The single sheet handout listed Verdi as the composer and gave only the stars' names. Who sang Antonia's father? (Not on the Met's site either!) I'd like some more mid-range shots; close-ups are fine, but overdone. Overall: spectacular. Keep it up Met! (Why not every Saturday?) Audience: bribe the kids to come, so we can get the mean age down!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I loved every minute of it from the interviews, the stupendous sets, the superlative voices and the final bows. Once an occasional opera goer you have created an addict with these amazing HD performances

This was a superb production with an amazing cast of singers. Without a doubt, Joseph Calleja has stormed onto the world opera stage with "vocal drama from a distant era, like we can hear on the old shellac recordings featuring the voices of the greatest of the great: Caruso, Gigli…" That he is so young and has so much potential is wonderful for those who realize that Domingo has retired and Pavarotti has really retired.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I've loved this opera since I was a kid, and have seen quite a few performances, starting with the movie version that was produced in 1951 starring Robert Rounsville in the title role. The Met's new production is the best I've seen. Kate Lindsey (Nicklausse) stole the show with her acting.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
