Precious was more of a documentary than entertainment. Perspective is certainly the foundation issue for any honest review of this movie. Some will know firsthand, others will know because they've helped a "Precious", and still others just won't have a clue. This movie is not for the fainthearted (language, etc.) or for those that believe we should "live and let live". Those dealing with a "Precious" or working in the trenches of poverty should plan to bring plenty of tissue. Folks that think you should do whatever it takes to help yourself or that you are responsible for solely breaking the cycles that you are born into should stay home.

I would highly recommend this movie because I know many "Precious" today who, not unlike the main character in this movie, are resilient in the face of impossible odds. This young woman had a few adults who cared enough to get her to the "safety net" of an alternative school community. Strong acting aside, I would recommend this movie hoping it would encourage thinking and discourse about what happens to the young and disenfranchised today since "safety nets" no longer exist?

Excellent acting, but nothing I would reccommend to a friend. A realistic story that is unfortunately shared by many. The ending was a disappointment because it didn't show us a happy ending to her nightmare life. I left feeling depressed & dissatisfied.

'Precious' is a gut-wrenchingly honest and brutal portrayal of desperate poverty and appalling abuse, and yet a non-sentimental affirmation of the essence of humanity we all share, and its persistence in the face of apparently hopeless circumstances. Here is a young woman I might have passed on the subway and disregarded, or even worse, pitied. By showing the worst in us, this brilliantly acted movie reveals what is best in us. Mo'nique is a stunning actress, and Mariah Carey and Lennie Kravitz are surprisingly likable, earthy characters. Go out and see this movie at least twice!

This is a film that defies the Hollywood norms of beauty. The heretofore actress Gabourey Sidibe does an incredible job portraying an obese 16 year old pregnant mother living in an abusive home in Harlem. Mo'Nique plays against type as the mother who hates her. Mariah Carey does an admirable job as the social worker. And Lenny Kravitz puts in a brief but wonderful appearance as a male nurse's aid who befriends Precious. The story is both stark and sad but shows that there is always hope. Its well worth seeing and a strong Oscar contender. Well done!

MoNique did an excellent job of portraying a deranged abusive mother. Like wise, for Paula Patton in her role as "Precious." The acting in this movie was superb! However, the content was extremely depressing. I'm not sure I would recommend this movie, only because my preference for movies are the more upbeat comedy type. For a drama lover, I'd say it would be an excellent choice.

Very good movie and definitely worth seeing. The acting from everyone in the film is first-rate; there isn't one weak link.
However, the ending is poor not because it leaves one hanging, which some movies do, but because one feels like the director is trying to make a resolution, but it's so abrupt that the story line that had been flowing along so well suddenly gets abandoned.
Otherwise, very good.

I was deeply disturbed while watching this movie with the realization that the life Precious lived is a reality for many girls growing up here in the USA. Maybe the abuse does not come from their parents but from another family member, friend or neighbor where noone speaks up in defense of the abused child. Just like Precious' grandmother who knew but stood back and did nothing. Precious was a fighter who eventually broke free from her parents torture with the help from her junior high principal and alternative school teacher. Overall the movie was fantastic but I did not like the ending. The ending left me wondering about what happened to Precious and her children.

well worth the effort. This movie is about hope: the hope for a better life. "Precious" is a survivor.
"Precious" is the account of the various forms of abuse experienced by this black, overweight, 16 year old female raised in Harlem.
"Precious" never gives up no matter how many times she hears her own Mother describe her as "stupid".
In the end, Precious triumphs when a teacher at her "alternative" school takes an interest in her and "Precious" learns to read.
This is the beginning of a new world and a better life for "Precious" and her two children.

Powerful movie. Too close to the reality not seen by all. A wake up call for all to fight poverty in this country. No child should grow in that environment. Yes, many will survive, but the pain for the rest of the disenfranchised is unacceptable for our country.

Even tho movie is placed in the 80's it was so real for even today. I showed strength from a young girl who never asked for her life to be the way it ended up. Though based on a novel, this movie depicts someone's real life story. This movie is not for entertainment, but rather for those who have the caring to see the dark side of life and the courage of those who choose to overcome the most despicable and heartbreaking of circumstances and those that reach out a hand to help them. Cudos to Oprah and Tyler for lending themselves to getting this movie out there!

Difficult to watch in certain parts but overall we owe it to Precious herself (and others who still live under those conditions) to see this movie. Let's not forget this type of thing goes on everyday! I don't know why her parents were not arrested (perhaps the book goes into deeper detail) but one cannot help but admire the strength she showed when she needed to and the self-esteem she managed to muster under such horrendous conditions. She used her imagination to take her away and saw herself "better" and that worked for her. Great film, GREAT acting (Mo Nique was AMAZING) as was the girl who played Percious --- both deserve academy awards! Mariah Carey 's performance was so compassionate and "real" - the whole cast deserves awards!

Outstanding - Directing first! Sure prize winner everyone should see.
But, if you buy tickets online through MovieTickets.com be very careful they do not enroll you in some program that is allowed to charge memberships, etc., to your credit card. They usually hook you through a free offer or discount. We were buying tickets for a Santikos Theater in San Antonio that just has changed to MovieTickets.com. Big Mistake!

I loved this movie. I've never read the book but I definitely will get it now. This innocent young lady is taken advantage of by the two people who are supposed to love and take care of her...her parents. She manages to love her own children unconditionally regardless of the abuse and neglect she encounters. You MUST see this movie. Everyone did a great job in their roles.

Everyone who has ever had a superior, elitest attitude about an uneducated, impoverished welfare mother ("well, she chose that life when she dropped out of school and chose to have those kids!" - and yes, I have been guilty too) should see this movie. NOT one of the several burdens this young girl carries is her choosing - NOT ONE. Yet she struggles on, and tries to find some happiness and love her kids in an otherwise miserable life. I found the fantasy scenes distracting and frankly disconcerting, but it is hard to find significant fault with this movie.

This movie was horrible. The excessive use of profanity shows a lack of creativity by the writer; don't know what to put here? Need to make this scene longer? Throw a dozen F bombs in there. The intent of the film, the message that was trying to be put across could have been accomplished in a film with a PG -13 rating. So many young ones who would greatly benefit from this film will never see it because the maker thought it necessary to bombard it with language and content not suitable for them. Totally low class. How this film is getting rave reviews is mindblowing.
